Well, it's been 2 weeks since re-submittal and the elections were keeping the leadership busy, but they got back to me today. Another round of changes, but many more of the items have passed this time around.

The following items were previously good:
Boots, holster/ammo belt, satchel, black undershirt, inner jacket, & hat

The following items are now good:
Weathering of the duster, pants/chaps, fingers, mask, pistols, gloves (which I completely remade), boot rockets,

The following items need additional work to pass:

Breathing canister. Need to make sure it sits flat on my back. I added Velcro to do this previously but in the process of having a 12 year old help me suit up, it was raised off my back for my resubmission photos. Not a problem to fix. The problem is that the canister doesn't match the exact shape of the one on the show, even though it's pretty close. Here is a picture of it currently:

Here is the reference picture:

Breather by Michael Halstead, on Flickr

So, that's project #1 to fix.

The second piece was that my duster coat has inner sleeves which are not on the character. I need to cut out the inner sleeves and remove them. Also, the flaps on the front of my coat need to lay flat, so I'll need to add some Velcro or snaps to keep them down.

Here is a pic of the front of the jacket:

Here is the reference material:

As you can see, there is no inner sleeve, just the outer part that is angled downward. Should be easy to cut out but I'm a little worried that doing so will require me to lengthen the gauntlet hoses as the attachment point is right in that area. I'll see what happens once I sit down with some scissors and determination.

Also, I posted pictures of me in the gauntlets but neglected to add photos for them to review of just the finished product on the floor. So, I sent on photos of the gauntlets for their review. Those have been the most difficult part of the build so I am hopeful that they will like them, but at the same time, I am realistic that they could need additional changes.

Lastly, the detachment leadership has mentioned to me the possibility of being the CRL model. To do so, I would need to acheive the Infamous standard. The good news about this is that they have mentioned that the only major change I would need to make from basic approval to Infamous approval is that the duster and under jacket need to be two separate pieces, not attached as mine currently is. I've said that I would like to seek basic approval so that I can troop in the costume but am interested in being the CRL model. I would likely need to build the jacket/duster from scratch or cut mine into two parts and add a backing to the jacket, maybe mesh like some Vaders do, so that they can be separate.

Anyway, just wanted to share where things stand in case anybody was curious.

Not much time to work today, but I feel like I was able to tackle the changes to the jacket. I've realized that Velcro and glue will work on leather but it will weaken over time, so to get the flaps to lay flat, I thought I'd try an easier, and hopefully, more permanent route. Sewing them!

You know you're in for a long day when you need a pair of pliers to get the needle to go through.

20180227_144621 by Michael Halstead, on Flickr

But, just a few stitches on the end of each flap and now they lay flat like they are supposed to:

20180227_154027 by Michael Halstead, on Flickr

Then, I had to get rid of the inner sleeves that are not on the character. So, I cut them out:

20180227_155204 by Michael Halstead, on Flickr

20180227_155210 by Michael Halstead, on Flickr

And then I went back and sewed up the loose inner fabric so that they look good. May need a bit of additional trimming and perhaps some paint, but here is the main idea:

20180227_164930 by Michael Halstead, on Flickr

20180227_164957 by Michael Halstead, on Flickr

And, here is where we stand currently.

20180227_165158 by Michael Halstead, on Flickr

This left me with a slight problem in that my hose connection point is up the sleeve and is now exposed when attached:

20180227_170818 by Michael Halstead, on Flickr

So, I'm going to remove the current system and move it up the bicep a bit more so that it will be out of sight and then I think I have this portion done. That will leave the breather and if there is any feedback on the gauntlets.

I received my gauntlet feedback and it is really good news with a small step back. The dart tips on the bottom need to be scaled smaller so that they aren't as large as I have them. Not a problem and I need to find something at the hardware store or build a little triangle piece or cone out of worbla. Then, there is one piece where a transition from worbla to plastic isn't smooth and I need to get that smoothed out. Neither are really all that difficult and I'm sure I can get them done.

The drawback is that they said with these changes, the gauntlets would be sufficient for basic approval but if I were to be the CRL model, I would need the sides of them to be much smoother. That would require a total rebuild from scratch. I have the digital files still so if I could find somebody that would help me scale them to my arms and print them out, that would be a start, but even the digital files are off in places so heavy customization will still be needed.

Anyway, I'm exctastic that I'm getting much closer to basic approval. That has been the goal all along. Once I achieve basic, I'll have to see what needs to be done and how much it would cost to do the work achieve the CRL model standards. Pretty sure if I were to go CRL model, I'd want to use the Chris Stevens Creations mask, which will require a rebuild of the breather, hoses, and hat as well... Lots to think about.

So, good news overall.

Working a bit late into the night this time on this as I just can't sneak away from work to get stuff done like I used to. First, I wanted to share a picture of my work space. If this doesn't make you laugh, I don't know what will. See how many costume pieces you can find!

20180228_093312 by Michael Halstead, on Flickr

Somewhere in that mess, I work a day job!

So, back to Cad Bane! First, I removed and re-sewed my hose attachment point up closer to my shoulder so that the hoses off the gauntlets will have a hidden attachment point. This is why I left a good chunk of the inner sleeve as it was leather and the stitching has something solid to hold on to:

20180228_160510 by Michael Halstead, on Flickr

20180228_160524 by Michael Halstead, on Flickr

Next, I started working on the breather. If I am understanding the feedback right and looking at the reference material, my canister on the bottom needed more tapered ends and was currently just shaped wrong. So, I heated up the worbla and popped the last layer off:

20180228_153300 by Michael Halstead, on Flickr

While I was at it, I smoothed out the horizontal line across the bottom. In the reference material I am using, there is no horizontal line. So, I erased it and can add it back if needed.

20180228_154454 by Michael Halstead, on Flickr

Initially, I was going to just add the rounded parts back on and then worbla it back on:

20180228_154937 by Michael Halstead, on Flickr

But that left the end cannisters without the taper, so I tore it all off! Got rid of all the cork from my initial build:

20180228_155811 by Michael Halstead, on Flickr

Then, I started working on my gauntlet darts and tore the old suckers off:

20180228_161219 by Michael Halstead, on Flickr

Then it was a trip to good old Parkrose Hardware to find parts that I thought I would need. Came home with this:

20180228_172604 by Michael Halstead, on Flickr

Bear with me now, it makes sense in my head! First thing was to use the rubber stoppers as the new tapered end of the breathing canister. Glued them on and will add some worbla to them tomorrow:

20180228_173835 by Michael Halstead, on Flickr

Remember, this is the look I am going for:

Breather by Michael Halstead, on Flickr

Then, I needed to work on some gauntlet darts. I don't have any woodworking tools, but I do have a drill and some sandpaper. I notched the end of the dowel so that it would fit into my drill:

20180228_174755 by Michael Halstead, on Flickr

Then, it would fit:

20180228_175401 by Michael Halstead, on Flickr

Then a few hours of doing this:

20180228_175409 by Michael Halstead, on Flickr

Ok, not really hours, but it seemed like forever. I ended up with this:

20180228_181024 by Michael Halstead, on Flickr

Cut it off and ended up with this. I didn't want to sharpen it to a total point because I'm going to be around children and all.

20180228_182342 by Michael Halstead, on Flickr

Repeat!

20180228_202225 by Michael Halstead, on Flickr

Now, I ended up with all these parts:

20180228_202714 by Michael Halstead, on Flickr

Put them together and ended up with gauntlet darts:

20180228_204404 by Michael Halstead, on Flickr

Now my gauntlet darts look like this. I haven't epoxied them together yet but can do that tomorrow. Going to seek some feedback on them first to see if the size is better.

Spent some time today getting ready for my next round of submission photos. Feel like I'm nearing the end on this build.

First, I added the worbla to the breathing canister:

20180301_102150 by Michael Halstead, on Flickr

Then I moved the button a little higher and hit it with some wood glue and gave it a paint job:

20180301_151114 by Michael Halstead, on Flickr

Then, I epoxied and added the new darts to the gauntlet:

I also took care of one area where there was a flappy piece of worbla that needed to be smoothed out. All good now, I hope!

Then, I stood in the costume and waited for my son to get home so we could do new submission photos. Here they are!

I HAVE BEEN APPROVED!!!!!! The third Cad Bane in the legion!

Received this message this morning from Thigette, the DL of the BHG:

Michael... you are ready Sir!!  You have done an incredible job in a very short period of time.  You will need to have your GML post up your submission photos in the GML thread on Legion and I will give the approval there.  Congrats Hunter!!

What an amazing experience. Still more work to do to reach the Infamous standard and help work towards a CRL, but I am now a bounty hunter! Special thanks to everybody that helped me through this process and encouraged me and a very special thank you to Nightshine for helping mentor me in the process. What a trip!
