Author Topic: New to building a TK? Here are the items you should have on hand  (Read 2790 times)

I thought it might be helpful to have one place where we keep a list of supplies and tools that are recommended for use during a TK build. Please post your items (and what they're used for in case someone is coming into this completely new, maybe where to buy if it's something strange) as a reply, and I'll add them to the master list here.

(I don't really know what to list here myself. I just wanted to jumpstart the list.)

Cutting:
- Razor blades
- Lexan scissors
- Cut-proof gloves

Glue:
- E6000

Other Tools:
- Clamps/Magnets to hold glued pieces in place while glue cures
- Sanding supplies
- Drill

Lots of Blue tape!!!

You'll want to tape the magnets separately or small groups of two to three, to be able to get them apart!!!
They will want to all join up and become one. You'll have a Bee och of a time trying get them apart otherwise.
And they don't like to separate sideways much either!

Also the tape is good for "drawing lines" for cutting (if needed) as well as holding pieces together for test fittings.

- Lexan scissors - THE BEST for cutting ABS. They are difficult to find in stores, so I suggest Amazon. Get the set of two: one straight, one curved.

- Dremel - This came in really handy on my build. Cheaper than a hand drill too. Get one that comes with drill bits and a sanding drum. Great for all the small holes you'll need to drill, and the sanding wheel works really well for fine tuning the ears. (Unless you got an Anovos kit, they already did that for you..  :P)

- 18" metal ruler - Art/drafting supply stores will have them. Flexible ruler with a non-slip cork backing. Great for measuring your trim lines and as a guide while cutting with an x-acto.

-  Get as many small plastic clamps and 'rare earth' magnets as you can!   At least a dozen or more of each.
