Code Cylinders - Completed!!
« on: January 11, 2012, 11:04:57 PM »
As part of my work on a Moff costume, I have begun making the code cylinders. Using the ubiquitous chalk holders, I elected to go with high detail to match the original dosimeters used in the movies. Pencil Dosimeters have a view port on one end that allows the viewer to read rads. Following an IOC thread, I started on a prototype (thanks to Steve Squire for the chalk holder) the pics that follow are of the prototype. There are different makers of these holders, but the best one I could find are from Charles Leonard, Inc. and will use four of them (got them today!!) for the final production run. The next step is re-creating the brass clip, have cut out the wrap around piece, but its too light a gauge so will try again with a heavier one. Of course chalk holders are not as long, but all we're interested in is the top sticking up out of the pocket and the clip. So, here you go, all recommendations, comments, welcome!

The originals from the movie

This is a "before and after" showing the original chalk holder on the left and the modified on the right. I think I need to set down the bezeled insert a little more.

Here's the disassembled holder, note the white end cap, I had to grind off the flange of the mushroom head so the piece can be flipped and slipped into the center piece.

Here's the center piece, I used a triangle file to create the bezel around the rim then painted the inserted white cap black (thanks Nick), clipped the tangs short (otherwise they'd stick out the bottom) and threw away the spring.

I used a nickel plated finish washer for the top, painted it metallic blue and super glued it to the top piece and voila'
Next post will be the clip!!

Phil

Phil, have you thought about using a Faultless Pencils Clip?

It's made of spring steel and you would need to find a brass treatment (electroplating) or you could paint it using a brass-colored metallic paint.

Ron,
I only have one (1) of the original batch left, but just received several full sized dosimeters with the clips. While made by the same company (R.A. Stephen) they are not the ones with the blue viewport "button" on the top as was used in the movie. My intent is to modify four (4) of these, adding a bezel and blue viewport on the top. I am not going to use the finish washer as I use in the chalk holders, but an industrial spacer I found.

I am going to make a final batch of the chalk holder style since I have some clips for those, but my intent is to do the complete full-sized code cylinder. I will keep you informed of the progress. Here's the comparison of the chalk holder one with the full sized one just received today (your timing is impeccable Ron!).

Phil

I am going to flip the dosimeter and simply use the opposite end and modify it. That way I avoid having to machine the engraving off of the top.  The clip fits a recess on the dosimeter, but it can be spread to fit without problem on the larger diameter of the opposite end.
