a spotter is a person connected to the group, usually a spouse/girl-boy friend/parent, that attends the event to help the folks in costume navigate the crowds, helps with pictures and other kinds of things that the people in costume can't do for themselves since visibility is low to nil.

and sometimes it's potential members who dont have a costume yet,(you ), who just want to help out and get a taste of what goes on. Kind of like a "handler", and yes they are also crowd control, making sure people dont grab the blasters, thermal det's etc, or molest our people in other ways (lewd pics)...........ol tony

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Look up spotter in Wiktionary, the free dictionary.

A spotter is someone trained to look for something. The term has the following special meanings.
Weather spotter, an individual who observes the weather to inform other groups.
Storm spotter, a weather spotter who observes specific weather events.
In the military, a spotter is a member of a sniper team.
In weight training, a spotter will assist someone lifting a weight for safety; see spotting (weight training).

We need to have it added to the Wiki files......

omgosh! i've been trying to become a spotter, but haven't figured out how  :undecided:. this is a great post. i went to the portland comic book show and unofficially spotted (i guess you would call it {with permission, of course}) and it was great fun. even got to help a family take a pic!  :D
but again, i just don't know who to contact about OFFICIALLY becoming a spotter while i work on my cos.  :undecided:

there is no "official spotter" position, it is just a use them as we need them and you sign up on the event thread that you can help out on.  Check our calendar for most of our public events, we sometimes shoot an email out to support big events that need more than a couple of spotters.

Alan sat me down and gave me the "manual" (i guess you could call it) and it said there was a t-shirt you had to get and/or wear a black shirt with the garrison patch on it. what's the skinny on that?

its basically to separate the spotters from the groupies...if you have something that says Cloud City Garrison or 501st on it, but technically you can't "buy" anything that states 501st or Cloud City Garrison per 501st rules, Alan would have to explain it further.

Yes, and more importantly, it identifies that you are with us if you are taking pictures. It's not uncommon for adults to get a bit creeped out by some random dude snapping pics of their kids. The more 501st spotter flair you can sport, the better.
