Newbie needs a hand.
« on: September 20, 2009, 11:36:24 PM »
I am new to the forums here. I was referred to join by Mr. Chilcote at the Clackamas mall. To start i need help deciding what armour to build. I am caught between a good ol' Storm Trooper, and a Clone Trooper. I would also be willing to do pretty much any troop type that is in short supply. After deciding what to build, I definitely need help building it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

*cough* Scout *cough*, Welcome and I would say at this point there are more varieties of clones to choose from and with the new cartoon tv series clones are pretty popular. Somewhere there is a list of what clones we have that troop, and what we need.

Wait... in short supply?  Can you really have too many Stormtroopers?

Welcome, my friend.  I guess what costume you do depends on what costume to wish to do.  Do no leave it up to others, it is yours.  But that's just my opinion.

I second that .  It is your costume.  I would look at the cost/skill level required as well when deciding.

But then again you can never have enough stormtroopers.

I would personally really love to do either a Storm Trooper or Clone trooper with equal relish. Since I don't know what the cost to build a suit of armour is I would first say, why not do both.

Thoughts please.

I'll give you some advice that might be considered useful.

I've assembled many costumes and I have to admit clone
is THE HARDEST kit to put together. You'll have to size
various parts, trim till your blue in the face, paint/re paint, fight
with the foam belt, you'll yell "gorram" (or its nearest English
equivalent)multiple times, trim the bucket, Bondo will be your
new best friend (or worst enemy), you'll need new tools,  and like I've been
told you'll never feel finished with it.....

The best part is.....be sure to sand right next to somebody painting a rebel
blaster.......

.

Oh yeah welcome to the boards.....

To me, and this in an OPINION only,  we have so many people with specialty costumes (myself included) that we are often short in our TK ranks.  I have seen requests for a group of several TKs for certain events that we have trouble filling them sometimes.

So True Jason. Stormtroopers are great start..  Before you buy a TK kit on Ebay or etc.. Please contact us first so you know you are getting a good deal.

I would prefer to build my own if at all possible. I think I shall go with a generic Storm Trooper. Is there anywhere to get a how to build one?

Studio Creations has some good tutorials. The thing is that you would need access to molds, vac forming table, plastic.....

If you can sculpt your own molds, then you are light years ahead of most people. If not, then you may want to go the kit route.

However, I would advise talking openly about how to acquire molds... that is a tabooed subject on the various forums. But for all things storm trooper, I would highly recommend going to the First Imperial Stormtrooper Detachment forums of the 501st Legion.

Yup, What Bill said.  FISD can be found at www.whitearmor.net
You will still have plenty of fun time and work assembling a kit.  Most new troops start with th "FX" kit.  They are decent and will fit a wide variety of body types.  They re reasonably pricee too.  Alot of people are buying these with out the helmet as they are on the largish side and replace them with a smaller, more accurate helmet.  All of this can be studied at th FISD

I think if you are going to build it yourself no matter what you choose will cost more if you don't already have the Vac table and other tools in regards to shaping the material to the acceptable shape needed to join. If you can hook up with a member that already has good molds and will let you pay for materials you can save a grip of money that way and still nick and gouge your hands while trimming like the rest of us .
