WHAT: Earthstock - a prom for high school kids with special needs - Portland
WHERE: The Crystal Ballroom (1332 W Burnside St, Portland, OR 97209) in Portland
DATE: Friday, May 5th
TIME: Event: 10am - 1pm/In Costume: Any time during the event, stay as long as you would like or able
UPON ARRIVAL: Please text Tim as you park and he will meet you out front of the Crystal Ballroom at street level. For any star wars people arriving later, please go to the second floor. If you come out of the elevator, turn right and another quick right and the room should be on your right side (just across from Lola’s room) where you folks can change and store your stuff. Tim will be wearing an orange cap and can be reached at 949-228-1576. Alternatively, Tony will be up on the third floor in the ballroom, likely at the music control panel, which typically sits in the far right side of the room.
CAUSE: Earthstock
Each year, 700+ high school students with special needs, and their aids, attend Earthstock at the Crystal Ballroom (and it’s free for all the participants). For these kids, it’s often the highlight of their year and provides them with memories they can cherish for a lifetime. At Earthstock, the kids are accepted, included and loved. We’ve been on hiatus for three years during Covid, but back again this year. This will be our 30th year.
PARKING: Parking is in lots or street nearby - I will reimburse your parking cost
CHANGING AND STORAGE: We have a dedicated room for your use on the floor below the main ballroom, across from Lola's Room. There is plenty of room to change
COSTUME REQUESTS: We don't have any restrictions as long as the characters don't act scary to the kids
BLASTER POLICY: TBD
MEMBERS' CHILDREN IN COSTUME: Yes, children in costume are welcome to attend
OTHER DETAILS: Our goal is to offer the kids a friendly, accepting and supportive environment – we want to be the kindest event of the year. All the kids have monitors/chaperons, so our volunteers are not taking care of the kids individually. Primarily, our volunteers are there to smile, encourage the kids and have fun. Many of our volunteers are simply dancing and you’ll never go wrong if you do that! Overall, our volunteers tell us it’s the easiest, least stressful, most positive volunteering gig they have experienced.
ANYTHING ELSE: Joe Stagliano and I work together at Nike. I think you'll find this event incredibly inspiring. The kids are awesome and we have enthusiastic volunteers. Plus the Crystal Ballroom is a great venue.
