Title: Anovos ANH TK pre-order people, please check in!
Post by: maxsteele on June 14, 2015, 12:18:49 AM
Hello everyone!

For those who may not know me, my name's Ron, and I'm the First Imperial Stormtrooper Division (FISD) Attaché for Cloud City Garrison.  My primary responsibility is to help out members of our Garrison who are donning the white armor get help and information on costume requirements and build methods to further the accuracy of Stormtrooper armor in the 501st.

With Anovos coming into the A New Hope TK armor space, there will be quite a few people who are new to assembling armor and will undoubtedly have questions and concerns once the Big Brown Box arrives later this year.

What I'd like to do is get an idea of how many people have ordered the Anovos ANH TK armor and who out of those people are doing this for the first time. Please respond to this thread if you have ordered an Anovos ANH TK kit and are either new to the Garrison or a current member looking for help once the kits start shipping.

There is a base approval for 501st membership, but the FISD has two certifications above base approval for a more accurate armor build.  The next level above base approval is called Expert Infantry, or EI, and the level above that is Centurion.  Most of the changes between base approval and EI are simplest to do at the initial build stage than after complete assembly.  Centurion level has changes above EI that can be done either during building or even after with relatively little extra work.

Because we don't know how Anovos is going to instruct anyone on how to assemble their ANH TK kit, I would like to emphasize the importance of checking in with myself or other members of the FISD community before starting assembly of your Anovos ANH TK kits if you are at all interested in a costume built above the base approval level.  There may even be alterations that need to be made to the kit for base approval, which myself and others here and at the FISD forums are more than happy to assist with.

Thanks for your time and attention and I'm looking forward to having a bigger group of TKs in Cloud City Garrison!

Marc and I have both ordered these kits, but we're going to make sandies out of them. I'm looking forward to actually being involved in the building of the kit this time!

One thing about the Anovos TK orders is that everyone should expect them to not be shipped in the time frame that they say so you won't be disappointed. If I had to guess, we probably won't start seeing them until Spring of next year. Get all of your misc parts going in the mean time (boots, blaster, glue, etc).

I ordered a kit. As a short girl I expect I'll have to do a lot of trimming to make it work. I'm looking forward to armor parties!

I have ordered an Anovos ANH TK kit as well.  I would love to know what the extra work is involved for EI approval.  I have found 2 1996 Hasbro E-11 blasters.  I've heard that they are approvable (as long as they are painted black) as is, but need modifications like the droopy doos conversion kit for EI approval.  Please correct me if I am wrong.  I have seen the forums for converting a Hasbro E-11 into a Poor Man's DLT-19 as well, so I may do that with my extra Blaster.  I've decided on the boots I am going to buy and will be purchasing them and painting them white in the next couple months.  I also have a Tie Pilot, so I've done a little work with armor, but would love all the advise I can get. If I'm able, I will come to an armor party or two.

Thanks,
Josh Mc.

I have ordered a TK Kit from ANOVOS as well.

I am planning on taking my current TK and making it a TD, and the new TK will be the replacement.

I also order the TX kit as well, so going to have a busy spring getting new armor kits assembled.

Thanks

Thank you!

I haven't assembled much TK armor, but worked with lots of other plastic/armor. Must haves, in my opinion(some aren't tools):

utility knife
x-acto knife
e-6000 adhesive
clamps of various sizes
dremel
sand paper
hot glue gun
band aids :)
straight edge/metal ruler
heat gun
sharpies/markers
tape measure

Some of these may not be needed, and I may have missed some that are needed, but I think this is a good list.

E6000 is ideal for ABS plastic. I used it on mine and it works great.  Highly recommended if it's your first build too. It's not a permanent bond like CA glue, so you can take pieces apart if you make any mistakes. Make sure you get plently of small plastic clamps and rare earth magnets too.

I am routinely watching my account status to see the change to fullfilled :)

I am eager to build the armor :) I have wanted TK armor for years. I am a member of the R2 builders and have one of the local R2's running around Portland.

I have never built armor though, so it will be a wonderful new learning event :D

Thank you for the warm welcome, and well done opening up for a build event.

I too purchased the ANH TK kit from Anovos earlier this year when first announced. I'm keeping it "as is" and not going to build it at this time until I've rid myself of some tonnage  It's good motivation!

Nick ordered the ST a couple of months ago from them as well.

Mine is also a post-celebration shipment. (Ordered on 4/30)

I really want to have mine ready for Starlight, since that was my first CCG event last year, where I helped as a spotter.

I'm planning on using the original bracket strapping method for the torso.  Not because it's "authentic" but because it looks faster and easier.  Thoughts from any experts?

Can't wait to get started!  Looking forward to armor parties!

People in California are already getting their kits! If you sign up for the Fedex Delivery Manager it'll show if your label has been created, etc long before Anovos sends out a shipping confirmation.

The kit for my brother in law has its label made, hoping it shows up early next week!

First of all -  YAY!

Alright -  Could someone who has received their armor please send me a copy of the build instructions that come with it?  We need to review it to make sure assembly is at the current 501st standards for an ANH TK.

Please PM me if you have the set of instructions from Anovos and can either scan it, or if it's digital already, email it to me.

No instructions included. Sounds like they'll be online sometime this upcoming week. The "guildelines" for trimming are pretty generous with return edges too.

I'm sure it's been said somewhere else but they have a good 1/4" or more return for the forearms, which ideally for EIB is no return edge. We've trimmed it to the Anovos guidelines, and are about to start making it match EIB/Centurion standards. We have a decent sized box of trimmed ABS. Good times!

Post by: maxsteele on January 24, 2016, 09:05:19 PM
I've taken a look at the instructions that Anovos gives, and would like to give some comments.

First - everyone building this kit should go to www.whitearmor.net and make a build thread in http://www.whitearmor.net/forum/forum/80-anh-build-threads/ .   Everyone should do this so the community can offer up advice and watch your build thread to help prevent mistakes that are difficult to correct after you've made them.

Second - I am strongly against using CA Glue for your armor.  You are free to use what you wish, but it is strongly recommended to use e-6000.  It takes 24 hours to cure, but once it does it doesn't come apart unless you want it to.  And that's the big point - it *does* come apart.  If you use CA Glue and you make a mistake, there's no going back.

Third - Look at whitearmor.net for strapping suggestions.  I wouldn't go with the loop method Anovos suggests.  I would use either the bracket method Jason (Raintrooper) mentioned earlier, or I would use the snaps and straps system that myself and many others have used.  I would also suggest for snap plates to use polyfiber webbing instead of pieces of ABS to secure the snaps on.  It will form to the inside of your armor better as it's flexible.  Also cover the back of the snap with tape before gluing it to prevent scraping and possible glue interaction with the plastic and metal.

Fourth - some suggestions with the armor itself:

A)  No return edge at the wrist end of the forearms
B)  No return edge at the foot end of the shin pieces
C)  Use 2 inch white elastic to connect the front plate to the back plate at the shoulders

Here is my build thread:

http://www.whitearmor.net/forum/topic/24804-maxsteeles-new-ne-armor-build/page-1

I know there are other things to say, but this is what I've found in the limited time I've had to study the instructions.  Please look at other ANH builds on whitearmor.net , ask lots of questions, and update your build thread with progress and pictures.  As always, please send me a message with any questions you have on your build.  Good luck and have fun!

James and I spent most of Saturday evening and Sunday on his armor, and have all of the parts trimmed and sanded and all of the arms and legs (minus the thigh pieces) together. I was going to document most of the process, but I ended up with about three pictures. Ooops.

The neck seal I'm not a big fan of. When James tried it on, it was really tough to get past the ribbed part of the neckseal. You really have to exert a ton of force on it to move past there. Not sure if over time that will get better but with how small the zipper is I have a feeling it's life will be short. Anyone else have this problem? I think Darman on FISD will be a busy guy very soon...

Luke,

We met back in July at the Sherwood parade (and maybe at Starlight).

My kit should arrive on Wed.  I'd love to get together with you guys, if you wouldn't mind another.

I'm in the Vancouver area, but I'm willing to travel.

Thanks.

that neck seal zipper is tiny, I think you are correct on its lifespan

I also think the canvas belt may need replaced.

As I start trimming my armor, I am reminded of a few tips that may come in handy if anyone is attempting this for the first time:

1.Score and snap works best on straight cuts, but be cautious around corners. The plastic will want to tear, especially if the score isn't deep enough.
2. Go slow, the plastic is slippery, even with a brand new blade it can get away from you.
3. The trim line is a good guide, but the blade will easily cut right out of that indentation.

and a reminder (although you've heard it a million times) cut AWAY from yourself. My 3rd piece in.....blood....

Chris

Also, before you glue anything, all of the plastic has a thin plastic film on it. You'll want to take that off :)

Fedex try to deliver my kit on Saturday and I was not aware that was shipped, according with Anovos shipping schedule and based on when I PO my kit, I was supposed to get it in late Feb. Since Fedex doesn't deliver on Mondays I'll have to wait and pickup the box tomorrow. I'll post some pictures.

Got my kit yesterday.

Super happy to see it after so long a wait.  I was a May the 4th purchaser, so there is hope that everyone will get theirs soon.

I have to say I'm fairly unimpressed with the helmet.  I have 2 other helmets, Tie Fighter and Royal Guard.  One is Vinyl and the other PVC (I think).  Both are thick material and very sturdy.  The TK helmet I got from Anovos is super thin, I think the masks that my kids have were made with thicker material.  The bucket is warped in the back, the opening was trimmed unevenly in front so one side is closer to my neck than the other. One side of the eyebrows (where the mask meets the helmet and has the rubber seal) seams to be wider than the other.  One of the tusks??? is loose and the material behind it is super thin and I can't tighten it.  The green visor material was super loose and didn't fit very tight, I tried to get it tighter and it started warping the eye holes, so I'll have to do some fitting there.  And what's with the ridiculous hard hat liner thing held in with 3 pieces of Velcro?  the bucket slips and slides around, I looked like a bobble head walking around.

Maybe some of the others on here who have buckets already can chime in and let me know if this is common among TK buckets.
I will bring it with me on Saturday (Evergreen aviation special needs day), maybe I'm over critical.

Other than that I really look forward to trimming the armor and getting it ready for build.

Thanks,
Madighon

I think most TK buckets are warped/wonky in the back, we did a quick eyeball test between my RS and the Anovos and the backs seemed fairly similar. I'll try to remember to bring my RS bucket to Evergreen and we can compare a little closer.

I'd agree that the visor was pretty cheap and the hard hard liner is terrible. I'd guess that they ran out of space to include a ratcheting system like in their FO TK helmet. I think we had to reglue the velcro after trying it on once or twice.

Since the belt/hoslter has 4 Chicago screws, and ANH stunt has 2, James removed the top screws. It's a decently sized hole too. Hmm. The belt is pretty flimsy compared to my RS belt, we thought about adding another layer of cloth to the backside, and that'd at least have a white background to the hole and give the belt a little more rigidity. Anyone thought of creative ideas for this?

Yup! Thin and cut quick for speedy delivery!
I'm a little concerned about using the "hard hat liner" (cough, joke, cough) that tightening it will warp the helmet more....
that is IF it stays stuck....which it doesn't seem to want to do.
There are "unpacking the box" videos that all say the same things.
I'll stick with foam.
Also the mesh is held in place with double sided tape and the visor is velcro, so it slides down.
Most are noticing the eyes have a gap at the top you can see through because of the sliding. For me, because it it one long piece, it cuts the bridge of my nose, so it will have to be cut into two pieces, one for each eye...they way it should be!
As for the holster belt, I'm miffed they put it together in the first place! It supposed to be a kit so we can fit them.
I'm SMALL!
I'll have to take it completely apart and redo the whole thing. Have to make a whole new cloth belt thanks to the holes!
Oh well, it was "cheap"!

Hi guys,

I got my kit over the weekend and I would like to start working on it. This is the first time I do it and want to submit it for approval, do I need to document all the process in an specific thread? Or do I need to create my own. Thank you!

You can create your own build thread in this section:

http://www.cloudcitygarrison.com/forum/index.php?board=103.0

And/or on whitearmor.net if you want to take advantage of the entire Stormtrooper detachment for feedback.

I'm thinking about creating a special "Anovos" section for build threads and discussions.

You should do that Steve.  It would be easier to find and navigate. :)  Or maybe just make one for Stormtroopers in general so it can be use for other builds as Anovos winds down. :)

Okay, I went ahead and created a new sub-forum in the public section here:

http://www.cloudcitygarrison.com/forum/index.php?board=131.0

Let's create meaningful topics and move the discussions there so this doesn't turn into a 50 page thread with all the good information buried among all the "mine showed up today!" posts (but please keep those coming here! We're all excited to hear about people getting their kits!)

I'm glad that everyone is getting their kits! I'm also ticked that we haven't recd ours yet, which we ordered a week or more before others that have already gotten theirs.

It's looking like they boxed up all the orders that paid $350 and sent them out.  Yours is probably waiting to get on a truck.  It would have been a logistics nightmare to make sure they are batches by the specific day people purchased and then send sequentially.  More delays, which no one wanted.  It's coming. :)

my order status on the Anovos website still says unfulfilled, I wonder if they will send me another kit? :)

Might not show fulfilled until they ship the soft parts.

I know of others that are further away from the ship location with double orders and ordered a week after we did that have recd their stuff. Don't get me wrong, the longer it takes to get here means the longer I'll have to wait until I have to trim two kits. LOL

To add rigidity to the belt, I might go to the fabric store and get a medium weight Iron on Interfacing, cut to size and iron on the back of the belt.

Please move all conversations about kit assembly to the new stormtrooper section to make them easier to find for everyone:

http://www.cloudcitygarrison.com/forum/index.php?board=131.0

This thread should just be about checking in with status on armor.

Thanks!

Ours just arrived.. no shipping notification for Anovos or anything in my Fed Ex manager. Ordered April 30th so I'm pretty sure they are just sending everything out at once and the order date has little impact.

Didn't show up in my FedEx manager either, only way I knew it was coming was an attempt to delivery notice on our door while we were out.
