Title: Hello and need help please.
Post by: Melody on May 08, 2015, 01:24:22 PM
Hi my name is Melody and I work in Crescent City, CA on the coast. A friend I met from work (James) told me about CCG after hearing I'm into costuming and cosplay, so here I am.  :D . I love helping children and am super into costuming. I'm usually Lady Sif from Thor, but I'm a Star Wars freak so I have a feeling CCG is going to be some of my most fun times in the near future. However, I do not sew so I'm looking for someone who might be able to help me. I am wanting to cosplay Satele Shan. I love her strength, her story, and her double light saber! Is anyone here able to help me with a Satele costume? and a double light saber?

Nice to meet you all and can't wait to personally meet you in person.

May the Force be with You!

Melody

Hi Melody:

At a high level, you should also check out:

http://www.forum.rebellegion.com/forum/index.php

http://www.rebellegion.com/satele-shan/

When it comes to tips on sourcing supplies and getting ideas on how to construct pieces of a costume, the Rebel Legion (and finding a board/site for Satele will be helpful.) I don't know the character well enough to offer more than that but perhaps others can chime in.  You will want to be sure your costume complies with standards of the Rebel Legion so be sure to research that.  Good luck and welcome.

:D Hi! Thank you for that information. I will definitely check out those links. I am not talented in the sewing department so would really need help. I am looking for an outfit like I attached here. That is not me in the Satele picture. I attached a pic of me so you can all see who your talking to though.  :)

Hi Melody! If you don't get any bites here or on the Rebel Legion (you'll see it referred to as the RL around here) for making the soft parts for your outfit, you might just need to take all the photos and descriptions you can get your hands on to a local seamstress and see if she/he can make you what you need from scratch. Those kinds of folks are usually pretty good at sourcing fabric and making things look the way you need them to, as long as you find someone good to go to. I did that for a costume I ended up abandoning and it actually turned out really well. Plus, she liked the challenge and variety from doing something she'd never done before.

Thank you! here in Crescent City there isn't very many seamstresses. I did ask a few and none wanted to even try it. It's a small town. Hoping to find someone to help me. I'll keep trying. I'll pay commission of course.  :D

I apologize for the pics. I just read the netiquette post. I don't have a link really so if you need to delete them that's ok to make it easier to scroll through this thread. If anyone can help me with a costume then I can email them personally the pics.

Your pics are totally fine! The issue with pics is when they are huge and embedded in the post, which gets the scroll bars all wacky.

I've seen people make Aayla Secura costumes before a number of times. Someone on the Rebel Legion forum might, perhaps, have a pattern. If you can't find any help, you could think about starting out with a costume that you can buy most of the parts for (like an X-wing pilot or fleet trooper) or one with patterns that are readily available (like a generic Jedi). Once you're a member you might have an easier time finding help.

Hi Melody!

You've made a forum account to post on the non-member forums of Cloud City Garrison (the local group for the 501st) and Kashyyyk Base (the local group for the Rebel Legion).

Once you make a 501st or Rebel Legion-approvable costume, you submit your final photos to the Member Liasons for approval, and once approved, become an official member of either the 501st (Empire) or Rebel Legion (Rebel).

As for what counts as "approvable", you can look at the Costume Reference Libraries / Standards for each organization here:

501st - http://www.501st.com/databank/Costuming:CRL
Rebel Legion - http://www.rebellegion.com/tutorials/

For the Rebel Legion, the link below is where you would go to find a list of most of the acceptable costumes (there are other accept costumes that aren't listed, like some face characters and comic book costumes, so the list is by no means only what is acceptable)...
http://www.rebellegion.com/costume-standards/full-costume-list/

To navigate it easier go to Get Involved -> Costume Standards -> By Category or By Source.

And for the Rebel Legion you don't actually submit the your costume to a liaison, you submit your costume pictures via a link on the RL forum and a costume judge will look it over. There are different sets of judges for different sections... For example, I'm a Rebel pilot judge, and I judge Rebel pilot costume applications (X-wing pilot, Y-wing pilot, snowspeeder pilot, B-wing pilot, A-wing pilot, Biggs Darklighter, Jek Porkins, and so on... And the Resistance X-wing pilot costumes in the near future, too).

Satele Shan would, for example, but a Rebel Legion costume. As would a generic Jedi. Or an X-wing pilot. Or a Rebel Fleet Trooper. Or Mon Mothma. Chewbacca, Han Solo and Lando Calrissian. Hera, Sabine, Kanan, Ezra and Zeb from Star Wars Rebels would also be Rebel Legion costumes.

Thank you!!!!!! totally want to do Zam. I think I may have found someone to hire to make it. Hopefully... not sure of price yet. If not, then anyone here who could sew please I need your help.
Title: Re: Hello and need help please.
Post by: carpe mindiem on July 13, 2015, 04:35:47 PM
Oh, please make Zam! I tried to make her for years before I gave up and sold off the incomplete costume. Good news is that the sewing of the fabric (acquired separately) to make the undersuit only cost about $120, but I was over $3,000 and 150 hours into it by the time I sold it though. Dented Helmet is the best resource for all things Zam. I have tons of links saved about her, too, so let me know when you dig into it.

Thanks Mindie I'm definitely doing Zam. I have two costumers who sew that are talking to me about making it and pricing.  I will take the best price of course since they are both doing this for over 10 yrs. and good. I'm excited! And I'm digging in at the end of this month when I get paid.  :D

Ok I have help!!! Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my Zam Wesell costume will be done in a month( by end of next month anyway and will take a week to ship). I will keep you all up on progress by weekly. Umm, is it ok to show progress here or should I post my progress somewhere else? Then I hope to become a member as soon as I get it!  :D  :D  :D  well, as soon as possible.

Congrats on finding someone to make the costume. I'm sure the armor and helmet aren't easy!

Thank you so much! I will post progress there. I will be getting weekly progress reports so I'll share it as I get it.  I'm super Stoked!!!! She is a cosplayer and has been doing cosplays for over 10 yrs and making costumes. She wants to tackle this one and is super excited to make it for me. She is making commission of course and it's so worth it to me because I cannot sew. She wants to make the whole thing from hat to boots! I feel very Blessed to have found her. She sounds pretty confident to be able to make it and wants me to be sure I love it. I will probably hire her for more costumes and I bet she can do my Satele Shan outfit as well. Halloween night I'll be in Disneyland for Mickey's party and there the whole weekend. I will be wearing my Zam Wesell costume for that! super excited!!!! Yay!!!!  :D Oh shoot (no pun intended), I need to find someone who can make her pistol. It looks super easy. I think I might try to figure that one out.

Awesome news! Where are you getting all of the parts from? The reason I ask is because it took us around 8 months for all of the parts makers to get us everything, and Zam has a TON of small and highly detailed parts/greeblies. Hopefully someone out there is supplying them a lot faster so you can get up and running soon!

I'm not sure yet. She is a cosplayer and seems to think we can get this done in a month. She went to the fabric store in her town today to start on the suit part. Hopefully she has some good ideas for the rest of it. She knows how to make things look like leather and other costume tricks.  :D

She's doing it from head to toe except the blaster? I'm really not trying to take the wind out of your sails, but due to the amount of detail, Zam has to be one of the top 5 most difficult costumes to make. If she's hasn't been spending boat loads of time doing research and trying to source parts that can't be made easily, then her estimate of a month is going to be way off, or it will end up not being good enough for approval. Proceed with caution and start a WIP so we can make sure she's on the right track. The worst thing is to spend a bunch of money and not get something approved.

In the mean time, if you want to troop sooner than later, then I would suggest an Imperial crew costume since you can get everything pretty quickly and it doesn't cost an arm and two legs.

Thank you so much for the info. I gave her 501st link to Zam Wesell of how the costume had to be. I never asked her to do the blaster pistol because I was more concerned with the costume. Now I think I just feel discouraged. I appreciate the help and concern but feel maybe this group isn't for me. I had a rough night from neighbors drama and I need to think on this.
Title: Re: Hello and need help please.
Post by: carpe mindiem on July 15, 2015, 10:22:51 PM
Hey, now. Don't get discouraged before you even start.

Zam is a super hard costume to do with tons of intricate parts. We just don't want to see you sink your money into something that you can't use to become part of the 501st. Considering the cost of building a Zam on your own is somewhere north of $3,000-$3,500, I have to imagine that having someone build it for you to 501st specs--especially as quickly as in a month--would cost at least $6,000-$7,000, if not more. If she's doing it much cheaper than that, I'd just be very attentive to whether it will be 501st approvable. If she's an experienced 501st costumer, she knows that drill already.

Different people go about this different ways. Sometimes they have a specific costume that they want to do no matter what, and they take all the time they need (sometimes years--literally) to build it. Other people just want to get involved quickly, so they opt for a pilot or jedi or something that's mostly soft parts to start out. Once you're exposed to more costuming stuff and people here with all their skills, you'll learn more about how to build things, when it's better to do it yourself, when it's better to pay someone else to do it, etc. Once you've been through an approval process, you'll be more familiar with how that whole process works and how important the CRLs are.

This hobby is a huge learning process, and that part of it is a lot of fun. You just have to figure out what works best for you!

Ok... Thank you Mindie! Big Hugs to you both! I appreciate you explaining. I think that evening due to the stress I felt with other situations, I took things a little harsher than I normally would. I apologize. I appreciate you guys for looking out for me especially as a newbie! I love you guys already!  :D ...My costumer seamstress has some of the parts of Zam and said she is confident she can finish it up in a month (maybe a touch longer) but she's shooting for a month since she has some of the stuff already and she knows the importance to me of paying that kind of money out and being accepted with 501st and CCG. But in the meantime, just in case it is going to take longer I am putting together a Juno Eclipse costume!!! I got the idea from one of your members who I consider a new friend of mine through our talks. And I am stunned I didn't think of Juno! because Juno is Awesome! lol...maybe I didn't think of her because she's blonde and I'm dark hair but wigs can change that! so I think that will be easier and I am pretty confident I can put that costume together (or have someone help me  :D) much easier than Zam. I'm still going to be Zam in the future but can't wait to be Juno! I really truly can't wait to be with all of you helping children and being a part of something I love with people who share that same love.

Good idea with Juno! Also, FYI for the future.... I do all the Padme arena costume accessories (everything but the pants, top, and cape) if you're interested. Your seamstress could knock the parts I don't do pretty easily. http://www.forum.rebellegion.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=31541&start=0

So I'm wondering if I may ask where to find those backless gloves for Juno Eclipse? does anyone know? I have been searching online and I find some close to but they have holes on the knuckles which is not what she wears, and I know those exact pair that 501st shows is out there. Just can't seem to find them. If anyone knows a link or something for me to go to I'd be so appreciative. I'm trying to put my Juno Eclipse outfit together.  :D :D :D

Ok call it chemo brain going back and forth, but Juno is coming along well. I still want to do Barris Offee though... I'm just waiting on my seamstress for the jacket, but I have most of the rest of it. Just got my Imperial hat. Whoo hoo! Can't wait to show the outfit soon. One thing, any suggestions on where to find a wig like Juno's hair?

Hi Everyone did you miss me? hehe...just kidding. So I found a really good costume to do in hopes of becoming a permanent member with you all. Are there any Sheltay Retracs in the house? I can pull her off perfectly with my long dark hair. My seamstress can make the dress and cape very easily. And I'm going to try to make her head band which looks pretty easy. I'm just wondering if there are anymore Sheltays?  :D

I'm halfway done with Juno but with my dark hair I found Sheltay is easy to make and less expensive.
Title: Re: Hello and need help please.
Post by: carpe mindiem on August 14, 2015, 11:24:42 AM
Nope, no Sheltays here. I've never even heard of that character and have no idea who it is.

So you have an in-progress Zam, in-progress Juno, in-progress Barris, and now Sheltay? You need to start WIP (work in progress) threads for each and post some pics of these, girl!
Title: Re: Hello and need help please.
Post by: Melody on August 14, 2015, 12:13:50 PM
Hi Mindie!
Yay! and I can't find anything about costume requirements for Sheltay here but it's pretty simple. I'm adding a pic of her. Sheltay Retrac was a human from Alderaan. She was at the end of Clone Wars when she was an aid to Bail Organa and also did another secret mission with Padme Amidila to obtain proof that senator Bezz Drexx was taking bribes from the confederacy of independant systems frpm a seperatist leader. When the Emperor sent his dreaded second-in-command Darth Vader to investigate the presence of Fang Zar on Alderaan, Sheltay Retrac was tasked with getting the Queen to safety. She married an artist from the castle lands of Alderaan and they had a baby named Winter. She was in Star Wars episode III Revenge of the sith. Retrac had a close bond with the Senator Organa. Sheltay Retrac was a slender, light-skinned woman with brown eyes. She had dark hair that she kept long following an Alderaanian custom. While serving Bail Organa at the end of the Clone Wars, she wore a tight-fitting white dress that revealed her shoulders and the color of which symbolized her belonging the Alderaanian ambassadorial community. Although she belonged to a fundamentally pacifist people, Sheltay Retrac was trained in combat and carried a hold-out blaster. That's her in a nutshell. I attached a pic of her.

As far as pics,  I haven't had my seamstress work on Zam yet. So no pics there. For Juno I only have my imperial hat and pants. Seamstress is working on the jacket now with same material as pants. I need to find a grey tank top (easy), boots, and belt with imperial buckle, oh and a wig then she'll be done. I will take a pic tonight of pants and hat if you want to see that. No Barris as of yet. That one was just a thought and did not act on it...yet... I take care of myself and my bills with no help at all, so funds are tight. I can only do one at a time. Well, working on two actually. I'm working on Sheltay and Juno. Sheltay will be best for me as I have long dark hair, and brown eyes already so I'll be able to pull her off naturally.  :) I just hope the kids recognize her. If they watched the end of Episode III Revenge of the Sith then they should know who she is. She had a brief spot in Star Wars but she was towards the end and helped a lot.

Make sure that the hat is not the standard Imperial - Juno's is different.

This forum should be your best friend right now for Sheltay and there are few gals that have made the costume so they should be able to shed some light. http://www.forum.rebellegion.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=29

Macy what is different about Juno's from the imperials? I got an imperial hat but it's a bit big. Hoping it fits when I get a wig.

Hi Melody - It is hard to describe - but if you look at the Imperial hats -they have a smooth front along with like a flip over on the top.  Juno's does not have the lip and her front is in 3 sections.  If you view her actual photos, it is not a standard Imperial hat, so if that is what you have it is incorrect   :undecided:
