Title: Getting into the EU - Books
Post by: Trumby on January 06, 2011, 09:45:19 AM
Hey all, I just started getting into the expanded universe stuff and am looking for recommendations on specific books to check out. I just read the Heir to the Empire trilogy by Timothy Zahn and I must say that it was fantastic. I need some more titles to look for next time I go to Powells so any help would be mighty appreciated :)

Read all of them  Kidding I'm biased toward Han Solo so Brian Daley's Han Solo Trilogy. Zahn's other Books are great as well. The EU covers alot, and depends on the era in which you want to dive into. Don't forget Dark Horse Comics Graphic Novels play into the EU as well. Dark Empire takes place after Heir to the Empire series.

My last Zhan book was Allegiance, and it was great fun! It was like The A-Team meets Star Wars!

I have read most of them. I have yet to read the Thrawn series. I was told those are the best. Guess I'm saving that for last ;)

if your interesting in clones read any of Karen Travis's works (some my argue with this but they are GOOD) and the Legacy of the Force series if you want to read about the grown up Solo children and later in life Boba Fett.

I have all of the books that have been released in paperback, about 3 books behind in the newest series.  The Republic commando series are great, Karen really went into detail to bring "new" characters and planets into EU.  I think the X-Wing series was pretty fun, especially since it really gave character to Wedge.  There are a few one off stories that are pretty good like Millenium Falcon and Deathstar, the little compilation stories that fall under the "tales of the..." are pretty weak. They have definately gotten better since the Splinter of the minds eyes era books that came out.

I second this recommendation.

I was overwhelmed  when I got the bug to start reading and got to the SW section at Borders.  I had no idea where to start.  I'm a fan of the original trilogy and main storyline.  Shadows of the Empire was perfect because it takes place right between Ep5 and Ep6.  I am now reading the Truce at Bakura.  takes place right after Ep6.

Natasha has been reading these graphic novels and "kids" books that they have at our library, they are pretty good too.

I would highly recommend both of those books

If you get one of the "newer" books or hit one of the many websites out there, you can follow the timeline that you are on and more or less watch the characters age and galaxy develop to what is currently written. Some books are just plugged in between events that are good too.

Has anyone read "Tatooine Ghost"? Recommend?

Yes, it is not tied into any of "series" like the Fate of the Jedi/X-wing or Vong series. It is a Han and Leia heavy story.

Cool.  Started reading it last night.  Had it with the others on the bookshelves in the Star Wars room for who knows how long! LOL

Anthony,

You might have seen this, but maybe it'll help you put the books into sequence as much as they can be…

It's a good story tying "Little Ani" and other events of Episode I in with the rest of the Star Wars series.  I would definitely recommend it!
