So I was scrolling the boards at my old Garrison and they are planning their annual picnic and I was wondering if Cloud City did anything like that. Basically, out of armor with the families and all. Since I don't like driving 530 to go to the Golden Gate Garrison picnic I was wondering if there are any plans for a CCG get together.
-
Kyle?
-
We had one last year, that Ara had helped me set up at last minute (since I was having a hard time finding a venue that was open). Most public parks are reserved by now. But you may be able to find something in the way of a venue, if you jump on it now. Not discounting the possibility, but it is kind of late in the game, based on my own experience from trying to set this up last year.

Kyle?
Yes, Dave?
Oh, I see - you want me to field the question! :P
The short answer to Ralph's question is "no, we don't have anything planned." We did have a big picnic a couple of years ago (back before I was even a 501st member). While I'd love to have more events organized like this for the garrison, I just don't have the time to do the work myself. I think the biggest hurdle is to choose a time and place at least a month in advance... that way if donations are needed to secure the park, they can be requested. ;)

Also trying to find a weekend that there is not a Troop happening.. .Though it would be fun.. planning is everything.
-
Listen, I am unemployed and at home with no car, a 4 yr old,an 8 yr old going on 16. If I do a little web surfing and find a few places in the Portland area to suggest a few dates to Poll, would you be interested?
Portland charges to use City parks, crap I thought California was greedy.
Saturday will be my first trip to the Portland area to play in the golf event so I hope to get a better understanding of the area.
-
Well, there are plenty of places close to portland that may or may not charge for a get together.
-
Council Crest Park was where we had it last year. Highest point of the city... you can see all of the surrounding valleys! The best part was that it didn't cost anything in the way of a park fee. Michael and I threw a football around quite a bit. There were quite a few folks who showed up for that little get-together. I am sure it would have been bigger had I planned it better, not nearly as big as the one down at Willamette Park, but it was a nice turnout, all the same.
- Bill
-
I looked on Calender for August and I saw 2 events listed for 8/23 and 8/29 unless it has not been updated with all future projects.
-
Council Crest Park was ok. Willamette Park Garrison picnic was awesome, would like to see us have another picnic this summer. Sounds like there's an interest, but the When's, where's, and how's need to be planned. Put out the invite to all of the groups (CCG, KB, Kamino Squad, Mando Mercs, Oregon FanForce, heck invite Titan and Alpha since they've trooped here also) once everything is nailed down, put out the price and have people chip in. If it's a free place, all the better. August has some open weekends, Sundays are ok. Not too late to plan a picnic. B.Y.O. Food and gear. Let's see if we can make it happen 8)
-Eric

There is a free park in south vancouver on the waterfront that is free just you need to show up early to get it. ;) it has a covered area. It has a big grass area and baseball field. ;) Not even a fee to park. Super Free! :P
http://www.ci.vancouver.wa.us/parks-recreation/parks_trails/parks/central_vancouver/marine.htm
Its super easy to get to for PDX folks. Just take I-5 to SR-14 take first exit then turn left at the stoplight and follow the road to you hit the park. ;)
-
Thanks for stepping up and not making Kyle do all the work. This is the kind of thing that members can do for each other.
-
I have a Birthday Weekend in August . LOL.. Anyway.. get your idea's out there.
-
This all sounds good to me, maybe if someone lives close enough to one of the parks suggested they can get there in the morning to reserve. I know nobody is going to want to drive down to Bend, so I think our best bet is Portland area, as long as its not the 29th of August because I need to take my wife out that day.
-
so do we want to start a poll for a couple of dates to choose from and then decide on a location. Get the date out of the way so people with work issues have time to work them out.
Looking at the Calender we have 8/1, 8/2, 8/8, 8/9. 8/15, 8/16 and 8/22 open with no events. So what do you think run a poll? Get a date and then find a location?
-
Yeah, man, run a poll and see what happens. Or, just pick a date, lock it in and put out the invite. Whoever makes it, makes it!
- Bill
-
Poll is up.
-
Can the rebel legion see this poll? Any Mod's on right now?
-
A poll sounds like a good option, just giving those dates as options and whichever wins, we can run with that. Normally, I'd ask to remove one of those days, but I like the poll option. :)
-Kyle
-
I didn't see an option for ending poll date, so do we want to say 2 weeks and announce the date on Monday the 27th?
-
Sounds good to me...
-Kyle

yes we can..............old tony kenobi

Thanks Tony, good luck with your event today...

I like this idea! We've done things like hang out before...usually after an armor party at Paul's...and they usually degenerate into a Rock Band party since Paul has that awesome TV. I've put my $0.02 in so there we go...but since I've lost my job Jason and I might not be able to make it since if all goes well I'll be getting a new job soon....and chances are that they'll want me on weekends...

that's weird because I see that 6 people, including myself have voted. As far as I know if you can see this thread you can vote.
-
BTW, we have always done the picnics as a potluck and left it to if you can bring something great, if you can't you can help with cleanup. This way those of us without jobs (raises hand) do not feel like they have to bring a ton of food. I think once we get a date chosen and maybe the park we can run a separate thread for who is bringing what, Tony you have to bring that dip .

I'm good for the 16th of Aug. Are all groups invited? Oregon FanForce, Mando Mercs, etc.??
-Eric

I would not have no problems at all with that, I was wondering about the mando clan up here if they checked the boards.

There are a couple of us that are on the Merc boards, currently Drago Seron is the only official member of the Northwest Confederacy Clan.
So, yes, we (Drago, Sithman, Volund Starfire, myself) do check the boards.
- Bill
-
good, then I say all is invited and we don't have to post on the merc boards. I check from time to time on the merc boards same name as on all the boards "Jabbasdead".
-
Maybe we should call it "Star Wars Fan Picnic" since all groups are invited. OFF, KB, CCG, Mercs...etc..
Great Idea. Looks like the weekend of August 15th or 16th are the dates so far being looked at.

As long as we keep it within the "family", I don't what half of Portland stopping by thinking LFL is having a release party .

That's why we do it out of costume and just keep it low-key!

Low-key? Lets see... last year there was:
1) The Star Wars cover.
2) People brought their lightsabers.
3) And people walking up asking who we were.
Yea, it was low-key.

Yeah, we did the whole 501st Gazebo at the park and some people turned it into a outdoor armor party complete with a brand new Republic Commando still in the shipping box...

Everyone, tomorrow is the cutoff to pick a date. Next up, where to meet and eat :D......That will be a separate thread, has anyone heard from any Rebels and the Mando Club.
-
dude, mostly, when you talk to anyone in the Garrison your also talking to the Rebels....most have duel citizenship :D the Mercs on the other hand are gonna have to be told what date was picked.
-
Well, at least one Merc is watching the thread....
-Bill

One-and-a-half...
-
So, if it is one and a half, what does that make you? :P
one = Drago
and a half = me (I am almost approved, it isn;t even funny)
- Bill

So it looks like a tie between 8/15 and 8/16 I flipped a challenge coin and the 8/15 won. Everyone okay with that?

I'd say "Make it so", but that'd be a Trek reference.... ;)

Alright, so we need a to find a park now and a food list.
-
Here (http://www.portlandonline.com/parks/finder/index.cfm?ShowResults=yes&SubAreas=6&SubAreas=1&SubAreasAll=&SubAreas=3&SubAreas=2&SubAreas=4&SubAreas=5) is a map of parks in Portland. If I may suggest some were close to the water.
-
The park we were at last year was free.... just saying.
Council Crest Park - the highest point of Portland. Check it out.
- Bill
-
This is good, if I can get a little help with the park selection that would be great since I have never been to any of them. If last years was good enough I would not have a problem with that.
-
If there's enough time to get something affordable, I'd rather get a park with a more defined area. Maybe something in between last year's free spot and the covered area by the Willamette that we got in 2006.
I'd be happy to donate some money to the cause...
-Kyle
-
Willamette Park was rather nice. It's over on SW Macadam near the Sellwood Bridge (right by the OPB offices). Because it is a State park and not entirely free, I'd be willing to chip in for it:)

This is the part where I will need help by someone in the Portland area because I don't think I can get up there again before the picnic.
-
The problem is finding a spot that hasn't been reserved already. The other thing is that with it being so close to the target date, the fees tend to be higher, as well... based on what I was able to determine last year.
- Bill
-
Oomar posted a link that must of had 40+ parks listed, I would think that they all can't be booked. If someone lives near a free community park that is first come first serve type, all we would need is for someone to show up early and reserve a spot for us. We have almost 4 weeks to identify a target and secure it for our members.
-
Lets find a Park that is not a confusing mess to find for folks who do not know Portland. something off I-5 or very easy to get to without getting lost. Thanks.
-
Hey Allan, remember how much of a difficult time we had last year? It was late in the game and finding a location that suits everyone is the million dollar task, right there.
Not trying to be a negative nelly, here, but based on the experience from last year, we couldn't secure any place because the preferred parks were already reserved or the cost was higher than anyone was willing to pay. Hence, that is why we went to a freebie park like Council Crest.
I suppose we could go to any park and provide our own shelters and bbq's. Realistically, that is what the reservations are paying for - the use of those amenities.
Are you just looking in Portland only, or have you checked out the outlying communities, as well? There is Canby, Tigard, Tualatin, Oregon City, West Linn, and Wilsonville, just to name a few other cities that have great parks.
- Bill

I like this idea, I figure I probably have the farthest to travel so my thinking is something easy to find and has plenty of parking.
-
If you decide to look in Wilsonville, The Korean memorial park next to Fry's doesn't get as crowded from other events as the larger park does but it also doesn't have a shelter.
George Rogers park and George Rogers beach in Lake Oswego are pretty easy to get to in Lake Oswego, have a shelter and lots of open space.
-
I just got off the phone to check on a few parks. Willamette and Overlook are both booked for that weekend. Page 2 of this PDF has all of the Portland parks & rec locations for picnics:
http://www.portlandonline.com/parks/index.cfm?a=93270&c=38301
I think at this point, finding something that is super simple to get to off of the highway might be a little difficult. :?

Thats okay, I have had to GPS my way around the last two times I was up anyways....

What is wrong with going to Wilsonville.. That is a good Idea. Also Oregon City.. It does not have to be in Portland. so could someone check out those. I do like the Wilsonville .. next to Fry's?.. at Korean War memorial?.. ..Look into that Please.

I am open to anything.....this is for the garrison. Plus I miss going to Fry's since moving from California. I would like to have a place picked out by the end of the month.

yea lets look at the laying areas.....might be able to find something if it's not Portland....

What about Boones Ferry Park or Memorial Park in Wilsonville. They look to have many amenities like BBQ's and shelters.

I vote Memorial Park.
-
Memorial Park is a great place and a beautiful park, which also makes it very popular and croweded. It would have to be reserved pretty much now if its still open, it gets reserved alot for baseball teams, company picnics (Wilsonville is a mostly business town ofter all), camps, etc.
Boone's Ferry park is a good option, I'd put it right up there with the Korean War Memorial Park.
I work in Wilsonville, does anyone from the boards live there? It might be easier (or less expensive) for a resident to reserve the park.
-
Memorial park in Wilsonville is nice and worth looking into for availability. I can find out the necessary info today if someone hasnt already. Salems gettin a little too far out in my opinion since tge majority of folks are in the Portland area.
-
OK, so I went to the City of Wilsonville's website to get some info:
http://www.ci.wilsonville.or.us/Index.aspx?page=174 (http://www.ci.wilsonville.or.us/Index.aspx?page=174)
Based on what I can see on this schedule:
http://activenet6.active.com/cityofwilsonville/?redir=1 (http://activenet6.active.com/cityofwilsonville/?redir=1),
I'm not sure whether the blank days mean that there is no availability on those days, or if the dates with times posted mean that the spot is available for the listed times, or if its been reserved already for the posted times. I left a voicemail with the parks folks to clarify. My guess is that the times posted mean that the spots are already reserved for that slot, in which case is a bummer.....and it's back to the drawing board. It would suck to have to go to Salem, as I would rather walk down SE 82nd Avenue at night if given the choice, but that's just my opinion. I guess every town and city has it's good and bad neighborhoods though, and I shouldn't be so judgmental...
-
Is Memorial Park big enough that we could go to a different part of the park with our own Shelters and portable BBQ's? An elementary school would work if we had our own shelters, if they have a playground.

yeah, every town has its good :D and bad  areas. there isnt anywhere in salem/keizer i would be worried about in the daytime, i cant say the same for portland.n keizer and s salem are GOOD, SAFE areas anytime though. thats one of the main reasons ive raised my kids and opened a shop in keizer .
there are several parks along the i-5 corridor between portland and salem. there are also a couple of great ones in keizer, which is only 30 min from downtown portland. im just throwing out options. im willing to go anywhere you all decide ..............old tony kenobi
-
Tony, I'm willing to consider it. Can you post some parks with any info that you have over there and we can add it to the list. I would like to get a poll up by sunday so we can pick a place by the 1st.
I might be up in your neck of the woods next week so maybe I can check out any suggestions..
-
Willamette Mission State Park is just north of Keizer out towards the Willamette Ferry. Might be a nice option. http://www.stateparks.com/willamette_mission.html
And one of my favorite places is John Neal Memorial County Park out in Lyons. It's a little ways east of Salem, so might be further than people from Portland may want to drive, but they do have a very nice reservable day-use covered group picnic area with bbqs and working sinks, nice bathrooms, and a large open field area. Great place to camp too, right on the river.

thanks david. willamette mission was one of the parks i was talking about. it has everything and its huge. there is a day use fee of $3 (per car?), plus at least $61 for a covered area.
http://www.oregonstateparks.org/park_139.php
another one is Spongs Landing in keizer. it also has everything, and its right on the willamette river for swimming  (i just throw my dog in). there is one of the 2 covered areas open on the 15th for $75 with no other fees.
http://www.co.marion.or.us/PW/Parks/descriptions/spongslanding.htm
and there is champooing park by newberg. it has 10 reservable covered areas for a fee plus a $3 day use fee.

No word back from City of Wilsonville. I think it's safe to assume that Memorial Park is booked, won't be an option. Looks like we're just better off showing up at some park in either Portland or down south early and just stakin' a couple tents into place. There is a Spray Park at the top of the hill in Oregon City that is HUGE, doesn't require reservations, has tennis courts and a playground. Can't remember the name though....It might be RIVERCREST, but I'm not sure. We went there for a birthday party out youngest boy was invited to and it's huge enough that we would have to worry about bumping elbows with anyone.
It's rad that there are so many looking into options for this year's picnic. Oh, and sorry for my ingorance about the Salem area in general. I've only been in that neck of the woods twice in my life, and I shouldn't make judgments based on a couple bad experiences. I'm sure there are some cool areas in Keizer or South Salem. I'd be happy to drive down if we wind up having the picnic there.
So do we still have the same CCG banner from a few years ago, or do we need another? Once we get a place pinned down hopefully by the end of this weekend, should we probably proceed to an RSVP list/food/libation list maybe (if we can get a location finalized soon)?
-
Food and other supplies was next on the list of things to put out there. Will post something tomorrow.

no worries Jason, you just gotta come down here and troop a couple of my events.. there ARE several areas in salem/keizer i wouldnt walk around after 11:00 without my "little friend"
do we want to find a spot COMPLETELY free, or with a "day use" fee or split the "reserve" fees?.............old tony kenobi
-
Yeah, Champoeg is a nice park too, and a bit further north so it's not such a drive for those coming down from Portland.
I'm certainly up for chipping in for a day-use fee if there is one for whatever location is selected.
-
I don't mind fee's because you know you will have a spot. I am not sure how CCG does donations to a fund, back at Golden Gate usually someone would just put it on a card and would collect as they went. I know some of us have Paypal accounts.
-
i, or someone else can pay the main fee, and just be repaid at the picnic?.............tony

I think I know the one you are referring to, Jason... Hillendale Park (on Clairmont Way)??? That is the one I am thinking of that had the basketball/tennis courts. They also have a volleyball area near the covered spot.
