i just read this on a eastern washingtons 501st members myspace
"Though it's important to let people know that as of this month, Lucasfilm has asked that the 501st does not renact lightsaber duels."
has anyone else heard about this?..........old tony kenobi

Can anyone confirm this? I'm not saying that you are not correct, only that myspace is not the most legitimate source.

Steve Sansweet sent an email, from Lucas Film, to Ablin Johnson (and the rebel legion as well) stating that we are no longer
allowed to perform Lightsaber Duels.

In Short, the official Reason:
The 501st, and The Rebel Legion, are an official organization that has limited use
of a copyrighted product, image and such. Our use only continues as long
as LFL grants us the say so. They could, at one swoop, destroy everything
we have, to include events, websites, products, ect ect. LFL has made
the decision based upon that at an official 501st event we are a representation
of LFL themselves. In which case if anything ever were to happen, such as an
injury, during a lightsaber duel LFL would be liable.
Even shorter, because they said so. End of story.

seems odd though. Wonder what the motivation behind that move was? Risk of injury... our inability to "yoda flip" all over the buildings, thus un-cannon?

In the base temple thread, there i a big discussion about this... I was already aware, but I was under the impression that we couldnt duel kids... Duels (staged of course) between members should be fine... Right?

No organized light saber duels whatso ever.

No bashing of lightsabers at events what so ever.

This will be EXTREMELY hard to police. Everyone in the world who isn't affiliated with any Lucasfilm type group(501st, RL, OFF etc) is considered "non-member". How can anyone stop that?

I conquer - That is pretty foolish to think that all saber duels will stop just because Lucas says so. That's non-sense - non-members are not going to give a darn that's for sure... :?

By Non-members I am referring to people that show up at our events.
We are not to endorse them to light saber duel either.

LFL controls ALL things Star Wars. 501st maybe mentioned first because of our size but the statement is equally pointed at Rebel Legion, Alpha Base etc. Statements like "I'm gonna film to my hearts content... that is for sure!" could be construed as a "I don't care" statement, which if you were just an ordinary joe that wouldn't matter but you are an official member of an official group and LFL might not take that to kindly. Not trying to tell you how it is, just an FYI/IMHO.

No. Disney has its own insurance, and has the ability to pay their own damages should a lawsuit ever
become involved.

According to the following (posted in Endor Base's forum), Sansweet hasn't stated that members can't duel with each other. It is that the activity of member dueling non-member member vs kids), or non-member dueling non-member (as in kids vs kids) that can't be encouraged, endorsed, or practiced.
Granted, this was originally posted back in October. I don't know if LFL has modified their position on the matter, or not. But this came straight from Sansweet to Kathy in Endor Base.
The reason for the no dueling gag order, for lack of a better phrase, is simple, it all comes down to liability and who has the insurance to cover it. LFL and Disney have, we don't.
A discussion came up in October 2008 in the Knights of the Jedi Order forum (http://www.rebellegion.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13787&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=120) regarding the Rebel Legion organizing "Jedi Training" tutorials at events and parties. Some of you know that Endor Base has done this in the past. Unfortunately, after conferring with Steve Sansweet, the Rebel Legion Command concluded that we can not continue to conduct any kind of lightsaber tutorials in which the children are handed a lightsaber (or even a fake foam saber) and shown how to use it.
Here is the Official Statement from Rebel Legion Council:
"Due to legal issues, the Rebel Legion cannot authorize, support, or be involved with any type of saber training classes. The Rebel Legion cannot allow any LFL or Rebel Legion trademarks, logos, phrases, monikers, etc to be involved with any variation of saber training classes. Members will be brought up on charges if they use LFL or Rebel Legion trademarks, logos, phrases, monikers, etc in conjunction with a saber training class. We highly recommend members consider the possible legal ramifications of liability before planning, arranging or conducting any saber training sessions on their own, independent of The Rebel Legion."
If some of you are part of Fan Force or other Star Wars clubs and want to continue to do this, you can not mention or involve the Rebel Legion in the training event at all. You can't hand out any Rebel Legion items at the event that would link us to it (examples being RL tattoos, trading cards, or activity books.)
Essentially, we were told by Steve Sansweet that Lucasfilm can not endorse this activity due to liability risks and trademark infringement. The safety of the children is their greatest concern, and it is also the Rebel Legion's concern.

I hope you understand.
It was concluded by the Rebel Legion Command that even if we were to change the name to something that did not infringe on LFL properties (like "Saber Training") that the Rebel Legion did not want to be liable if someone were to accidentally be hurt. Steve Sansweet also makes it clear that if the Rebel Legion had chosen to continue to do any kind of Jedi Training - even by another name - the Rebel Legion could not have any sort of Licensed LFL images associated with it (this includes the rebel bird logo which is now part of the Rebel Legion logo with LFL's permission). This is partly why even if one of our members decides to do training on their own they can't be giving out our tattoos or hang our banner at the event in close proximity to the training area. Much less mention that they are part of the Rebel Legion because the RL can't assume liability for the training.
The good news is that we have a fun alternative we can offer parents. We can still offer to give lightsaber demonstrations and have our Jedi talk about the ways or the force and what a lightsaber is used for (DEFENSE - please refrain from using words like kill and attack.). We just can't be playing with a child who is holding a lightsaber showing them how to swing it or conduct a mock duel with them. We can still pose with children who have lightsabers, and we can do mock duels with other Rebel Legion or 501st members as demonstrations.

That is the question that needs to be clarified. Based on the above information, I am inclined that members can participate in mock duels with each other, but that is it.
Like I said, the above quoted was from back in October. Things could have changed since then and Cooter could be right about there be NO dueling, whatsoever. I, honestly, don't know.

ok guys. what i saw was a concert in honor of star wars music, where 2 members of HAVOC (eastern wash) GARRISON were staging a fight in front of the orchestra. and at the bottom it had the disclaimer "please note that LUCASFILMS has prohibited ANY form of lightsaber duels/reinactments as of "this month""

I am still looking for the actual wording of what was put out. I can't access the Temple area (even though I am an officer) and would like to see it for myself. If it is specific that there is no more lightsaber duels ever by anyone, even consenting adults who know what they are doing, then I'll be ordering my lightsaber without a blade (why get a blade if I can't be part of a choreographed duel?).
Can someone point me to an actual link where LFL put this out?

As I said, this was put out back in October, but it is the only LFL dictate that I am aware of, other than what Albin has sent out to 501st Legion member, which Steve posted in the CCG Administrative section, if I recall correctly.

Okay what i got from all that was that we "can't conduct light saber training". In my mind that means we cannot get a group of kids together and say "here is how you use a lightsaber. lets practice". Not "no duels or crossing sabers with non-members"
Although with how hazy this issue is it would probably be best to refrain from any saber interaction with non-members (more specifically minors)

Major update - Albin just posted in the Council, he has gotten clarification from LFL regarding staged duels with EACH OTHER. Still no on anything involving guests or children:
"LFL only wants us to discontinue any Jedi Training Academy style events or any lightsaber events involving children. Turns out staged choreographed duels by our members are just fine. "

as long as LFL, RL or CCG and their logos etc are not connected in any way, do what you want on your own. we will be CHARGED (and potentially sued) if we encourage anyone else outside the membership to participate in any lightsaber duels connected to our events.
however WE ARE allowed to do staged duels among our CCG/RL members........old tony kenobi

I do think it's a good idea to avoid battling the kids. When we choreograph (even if it's not really planned out), most of us know that we have to take it easy on the blades, so I would hope that going forward anyone from either group (501st & RL) just knows not to really duel with the kids. Posing for photos is great too and quite honestly the whole thing got a little ridiculous there for a little while. :wink:

I now this thread is a bit old, but last year while I was in Australia, I got to troop with the local 501st there at the Clone Wars Premeire.... these three kids just went to TOWN on one of the TD's... bash, bash, bash..... went all Yoda-monkey on him... was runnning around the poor guy and whacking him from all angles... SMACK< SMACKETY-SMACK< SMACK<SMACK-SMACK<SMACK<SMACK-SMACK<SMACKETY!!! I was playing event phtographer and put my hand on one of the kid's shoulder to calm him down a bit... it was funny, but the potential for injury was DEFINATELY there!

Just wondering. With this "new", several years old, stance is there a group in the area (Oregon in general, Portland, or *enter a city's name*) that is up and running? For those of us interested in learning how to choreograph a, Lightsaber, duel. I know one of us, a garrison or base member, had an intrest topic, but nothing came of it. Plus the one DJMoonbass was promoting went belly up, I think; there is no forum any more.

You know, that troop for Episode I would have been the perfect place for some good choreography. We need to get together with whoever is going to do it and find a place to practice/train.
Does anyone know of a Jedi who owns a Martial Arts studio or something?
