Q: What costume can I build that is a cobbled together mish-mash mess using parts from my 3 other costumes?
A: Dengar
Dengar uses:

Thanks guys!
I can't wait to get started but this will be taking a bit of a backseat to my Snowtrooper since the WTF armor is about 6-8 weeks out, and I have a lot of parts to figure out on this one.
Man, Daryl! Busy busy!
 I'm probably biting off more than I can chew.

I blame my complete misunderstanding of how tall Dengar is on my Kenner action figures:
Height in order from shortest to tallest (according to starwars.com DataBank):
Zuckuss is: 1.50m or 4'11" tall
4-LOM is: 1.60m or 5'3" tall
Boba Fett is: 1.83m or 6' tall
Dengar is: 1.87m or 6'2" tall
IG-88 is: 1.96m or 6'5" tall
Bossk is: 2.06m or 6'9" tall
Kenner got this all wrong.
-
That's ok Daryl, we don't mind. I'm 5'11 but I think Zuck is like 4'6!

Uncle Sam gave me my money back so... backpack has been ordered!
OP has been updated.

Dengar's backpack has been sponsored by the IRS.
Pretty sure that's canon, right?

I think I got these paired up correctly, and on the correct leg, but I'm not sure it really matters because it's Dengar after all.

There was a major casualty with making these coverstrips. I was not wearing my cut-proof gloves (go figure), and my left ring-finger got in the way. Cut a gnarly gash just below the fingernail. Bled forever. Since the sliced skin was still partially attached, when I got the blood to slow I glued the skin flap down with zap-a-gap. Worked like a charm. Not a good scenario for my planned 3 troops this Saturday in my TK rubber gloves.
Here are the mock-ups with the cover strips:

Next up was finishing the moccasin boots, so I can properly size the back of the shins.
Started what I'm calling Version 1.0...

Awesome! Those boots look great!

Nice! Have you looked into adding some sort of sole inside the moccasins? Walking on anything outside wouldn't be super comfortable otherwise.

Very cool build Daryl!

The sole is double leather and I have shoe insoles inside. I also plan to coat the bottom with shoe goo.

Finished the shins by adding the coverstrips on the back and the TD diamond knees in the front:

I started painting today.

The armor's base paint is complete. It still needs a lot of weathering.

Finally back to this project.
Worked on getting the logo off of the gloves. I used the sanding bit in my dremel:
Left glove done:

The right cuff was thinner leather and I accidentally cut a couple of holes:

So I glued a scrap of leather on the inside:

Then I added the black paint weathering to the chest:

and the shoulder bells:

Took me a little bit to get my groove back on the weathering. I think it matches what I did last summer.

That’s some light reflection happening in my garage. It’s actually just brown and black.

While rereading the updated Dengar CRL (Jan 2018 updates), I noticed two color changes that I hadn't noticed when I initially reviewed the CRL updates:
Flight Suit
For 501st approval: Light tan.
Boots
For 501st approval: Light tan moccasin style, calf length boot.
Both of those were gray in the previous version of the CRL.
I was planning on going for gray on the flight suit, but I'm not too worried about the flight suit color change since I haven't dyed mine yet anyway.
I am a little concerned about the boot change since I already made mine out of gray suede:
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4346/36017322770_b3ea64015e.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/WSJceC)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/WSJceC) by daryl doak (https://www.flickr.com/photos/136564629@N02/), on Flickr

I'm thinking of a few options:
1. Buy new tan boot suede and remake the boots, and dye flight suit tan
Pro: Best option for CRL,
Con: Will cost more $ on suede, boots are a pain to make
2. weather the gray boots to hide gray, and dye flight suit tan
Pro: Don't need to spend more $ on suede
Con: gray boots and tan flight suit might look bad, doesn't follow CRL (maybe I'm grandfathered in since I was in progress when CRL changed?)
3. weather the gray boots to hide gray and dye flight suit gray to better match boots
Pro: Don't need to spend more $ on suede
Con: gray boots and gray flight suit doesn't follow CRL
Because I have costume OCD I'm thinking #1 would be the best. LOL
I'm waiting for some feedback from the BHG Detachment.

Got some advice from Garbz on the BHG forums. He recommended trying to paint the moccasins. Good idea.
Had nice weather today, so I was able to do a paint test on the leather moccasins.
Here is the paint I'm using:
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4801/38852963600_0f67675fdf_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/22ciAsL)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/22ciAsL) by daryl doak (https://www.flickr.com/photos/136564629@N02/), on Flickr
I used one of my first-attempt moccasins. Here is the before:

And here is the after, gray still on the left, tan on the right:
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4711/40620636882_b8b441971d_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/24Tvo9j)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/24Tvo9j) by daryl doak (https://www.flickr.com/photos/136564629@N02/), on Flickr
The leather still feels really soft and flexible, and not crusty like I thought they would be. I was also worried that the paint would crack and flake, but it doesn't.
I'm happy with the results and will paint the real boots soon.
-
The new tan sprayed on there looks really good! I wouldn't have thought the paint would gum up the swede leather.
-
I'm liking it. Good thinking. Would have thought spray would get brittle as well.
-
That's a pretty cool fix.

Unfortunately, no. I’ve been busy working on house stuff. Hopefully soon I’ll get motivated to get back to it.

This update is dedicated to my good friend CadBane3, Michael H...
Got just a little update. I weathered the thighs and shins, completing the weathering of all the armor parts.
(I apologize in advance for the terrible lighting in the photos)

I was asked on FB by another Dengar builder how I weathered my armor. So I’m going to attempt to describe it here.
I used a mixture of black acrylic and windex.
Then on top of the brown base, using just the tips of a 1” brush, I randomly pressed the bristles down in a vertical motion, making a messy pattern.
Then I took a rag and used a patting motion to get a random, smoother pattern.
I just kept repeating those steps until it looked like what I wanted.
-
After looking long and hard at the weathering on the armor I decided that it looked to "deliberate" instead of natural, so I decided to do this today:
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/950/41898166322_0ecbb32df1_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/26Qp48Y)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/26Qp48Y) by daryl doak (https://www.flickr.com/photos/136564629@N02/), on Flickr
-
NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok, fine, but I'm sure the new paint job will look even better so, carry on!
-
The Dengar thighs have this optional level-2 requirement: "Wide shim of plastic that is similar to armor is to help close the back seam".
There is an on-set photo of Dengar from the back that show these shims.
When I first built the armor I didn't think I was going to bother making this change, but since I was repainting the armor anyway I figured now is the best time.
So I went to the hardware store and found the thickest for sale sign they had:
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/977/41144262055_eb2242296a.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/25FM6Ex)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/25FM6Ex) by daryl doak (https://www.flickr.com/photos/136564629@N02/), on Flickr
I used paper to make a template for the shims.
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/958/42044428611_b7c73e6089.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/274jFPz)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/274jFPz) by daryl doak (https://www.flickr.com/photos/136564629@N02/), on Flickr
Traced them onto the sign and cut out the shims.
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/957/42044427211_7bc2feac5e.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/274jFpr)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/274jFpr) by daryl doak (https://www.flickr.com/photos/136564629@N02/), on Flickr
And then held my breath as a cut into a perfectly good pair of TK thighs, to add shims that I really don't need. lol
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/957/42000092652_03b96419aa.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/26Zpshu)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/26Zpshu) by daryl doak (https://www.flickr.com/photos/136564629@N02/), on Flickr
Test fitting the shims, they are still just flat.
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/823/27174176447_2c17dd7c5a.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/HphKVz)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/HphKVz) by daryl doak (https://www.flickr.com/photos/136564629@N02/), on Flickr
Then used my heat gun to curve them, with more test fitting.
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/976/27174176377_11a010e64f.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/HphKUn)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/HphKUn) by daryl doak (https://www.flickr.com/photos/136564629@N02/), on Flickr
I didn't really even bother to sand the wonky cuts on the thighs or shims before gluing them, I figured it wasn't necessary.

No bondo, ABS paste, or putty. We're doing this Dengar style, just add a little paint, and done.

Nice! Great idea on the signs. Probably saved you quite a bit to go that route instead of ABS and it's probably just as strong. Glad to see you tinkering away at this one again!

My black powder paint arrived today, so I decided to try weathering again.
I basically just used a rag and patted on the dry paint to get a random dirty, dull look on the armor.
Here is my first pass:

Once I'm happy with the look I'm gonna coat it with a matte clear coat.
-
That's looking pretty good!

I think I have the weathering look that I like:
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/831/41299783155_128b34d166_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/25VwbEP)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/25VwbEP) by daryl doak (https://www.flickr.com/photos/136564629@N02/), on Flickr
I'm sure I'll continue to add more weathering over time.
Added snap plates in the ab, chest, and butt plates (TK chest):

Got some cotton strapping in the mail, 1" and 1.25" olive, and 1.25" natural. It will be heavily weathered after it's been added.

I painted the moccasins, here is one gray (old) and one tan (new):
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/961/41479295824_268736c0be.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/26coewQ)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/26coewQ) by daryl doak (https://www.flickr.com/photos/136564629@N02/), on Flickr
I'll need to sew velcro onto the straps, gluing didn't work.
Next, I started some backpack accuracy updates. Overall the pack weighs too much since most of the parts are 3D printed, so I need to remove weight anywhere where I can. Here is a reference picture showing the butt plate and the backpack frame (but he's missing the belt):
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/945/42168710852_e09ff9d2a0_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/27fiEAQ)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/27fiEAQ) by daryl doak (https://www.flickr.com/photos/136564629@N02/), on Flickr
First, I completely disassembled the backpack:

Since this frame is not exactly the one used for the prop backpack, I needed to cut-off the tops of the the frame:

There we go:

The bed-roll was way too big, so I cut the fabric, and saved about 2 lbs.
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/969/42153739742_877b0e69f5.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/27dYWdf)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/27dYWdf) by daryl doak (https://www.flickr.com/photos/136564629@N02/), on Flickr
Much better now:
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/950/41479307214_785ee2a037.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/26cohVd)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/26cohVd) by daryl doak (https://www.flickr.com/photos/136564629@N02/), on Flickr
Next, I attempted to hollow-out the "canteen" piece.
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/955/41479307874_daf49d2987.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/26coi7A)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/26coi7A) by daryl doak (https://www.flickr.com/photos/136564629@N02/), on Flickr
I thought it was a solid piece before I started, but what a mess of 3D printed support stuff. Unfortunately I don't think this removed much weight:
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/950/41299797525_dc1d4e205f.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/25VwfWz)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/25VwfWz) by daryl doak (https://www.flickr.com/photos/136564629@N02/), on Flickr
Then, for accuracy, and a bonus weigh reduction, I angle cut the "cluster" panel, which is the top piece that the bed-roll sits on. The top section of the backpack frame will be bent backwards (similar to the original prop frame) allowing this piece to fit with this angle.
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/910/42199890831_5785df58ae.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/27i4tjF)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/27i4tjF) by daryl doak (https://www.flickr.com/photos/136564629@N02/), on Flickr
And finally, much thanks to Garbz (Aaron Garber) XO of the Bounty Hunter guild detachment. He is the Legion's Dengar expert and has been putting up with me asking him lots of question on Messenger. I'm sending him a couple of CCG patches and coins to thank him.

More backpack mods. Cut 1/2" or so off of the "bed-pan" box, and also notched it to fit the frame better.
Marked for the cut:

Better fit on the frame now:

Added snap plates to the chest's shoulders and the shoulder bells:

Added the ab to butt straps:

LOL, thanks guys.
Today I was a terrible human being. Since I wasn't able to borrow Jim's conduit bender yesterday, I bought one, bent my backpack, and returned it. I hope none of my friends work for Lowe's. LOL

A major item that I've been putting off was the hood, which needs to be custom-built. I was planning to go to Mike H's house to sew some velcro on strapping, and I asked him if he thought we could build one of these hoods. He said "I'm sure we could".
So armed with fabric, pins, scissors, a sewing machine, and a balaclava for a pattern, we got started designing (and by we, I mean Mike who did 95% of the work).
We built a test hood using spare fabric, which became the pattern for the real hood. We cut parts off of a spare coveralls and built what I think is an amazing Dengar hood.
Mike and I mid-project:

Then I was so excited I had to add the snaps to the front. (I won't be wearing my glasses when I actually wear the costume)

It's time for the next step I've been putting off for too long... dyeing the coveralls/hood.
I'm want to dye them from white to tan. How hard could it be? It's just adding color to fabric, piece of cake. What's the worst that could happen they turn out too dark brown, and then I need to lighten them.
I start by removing some unnecessary back and side pockets from the coveralls:
(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1759/41723017094_82ccea2097.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/26yVnnG)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/26yVnnG) by daryl doak (https://www.flickr.com/photos/136564629@N02/), on Flickr
(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1731/41723016964_31b993e1c8.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/26yVnks)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/26yVnks) by daryl doak (https://www.flickr.com/photos/136564629@N02/), on Flickr
Then I boil a pot of water and mix up my Rit sandstone synthetic dye in a bucket outside. (btw, I did not follow the dye instructions which state synthetic fabric must be dyed on the stovetop over consistent heat)
uh-oh, this doesn't look right, I'm looking for brown, not Pink! So I dump in a bottle of Rit tan dye, and stir for 30 minutes.
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/890/41723016904_48239f7511.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/26yVnjq)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/26yVnjq) by daryl doak (https://www.flickr.com/photos/136564629@N02/), on Flickr
oh no, what have I done? Maybe this fabric dyeing stuff is more complicated than I thought. MY COVERALLS ARE PINK, WTF????
(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1734/41723017644_e5895af1f1.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/26yVnxb)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/26yVnxb) by daryl doak (https://www.flickr.com/photos/136564629@N02/), on Flickr
I rinse them out and let them dry, and this is what I have. It's definitely not tan.
(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1759/41544001575_4dffb9f569.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/26i6Sie)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/26i6Sie) by daryl doak (https://www.flickr.com/photos/136564629@N02/), on Flickr
Now what do I do? Hire a professional? No, I can figure this out.
I'll start by turning them back to white using Rit dye remover. And then I'll retry the Rit synthetic, this time following the recommended stovetop instructions.
So I brew up the Rit color remover on the stovetop, I dunk the coveralls in the water and instantly all of the pink disappears and they become tan! I couldn't believe it. It was a miracle!

boot on left, coverall top right, white coverall at bottom:

Pink Dengar, aka Tha Fabulous Dengi, as he's known on the dancing circuit, does not have a full CRL yet and requires much more pleather and mesh. Probably easier to just go with good old tan Dengar! :D

A little more completed tonight.
Weathered the cloth parts using my black powder paint and a rag. (The weathering doesn't show well in the pictures).

Instead of using the rivets to secure the thigh elastic straps, I decided to add snap plates so I can change out the elastic, if necessary.

Today's Progress...
While waiting on some backpack parts from Mon-Cal, I worked on making the tube end-caps more accurate.
Here is how they came from Crookknight:
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/878/28612217478_57c6e145f1.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/KAn6qs)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/KAn6qs) by daryl doak (https://www.flickr.com/photos/136564629@N02/), on Flickr
So I sanded off the lettering and added some wall texture to get the bumpy look of the screen used end caps.

(Still needs to be painted)

Next, I Attached the tube to the frame using the support from Garbz.

Then I attached the holster to the thigh.

While waiting for my backpack parts to arrive, I decided to finally build my DL-21 blaster.
Last year I bought this 3D printed kit from Garbz@BHG.
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4153/35398582080_aab118a962_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/VW3ZbG)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/VW3ZbG) by daryl doak (https://www.flickr.com/photos/136564629@N02/), on Flickr
I originally wasn't going to spend much time filling and sanding the print lines, but Mike H. convinced me to do it. He loaned me some Zpoxy, which helps to fill the surface issues. So after a few coats, lots of sanding, I finally glued the kit together.

Then I used filler primer and more sanding. Then some satin black and silver.

After these were taken I also did some dry brush weathering, but it will need more.

That blaster looks amazing! Great work!

I did a little work on the belt buckle.
Glued on the greeblie.

Then decided to paint the chrome buckle to match the silver-painted greeblie.

Next step is to angle cut the upper box (on right), paint the boxes and tube, and then mount it all on the frame.
-
Made some progress on the backpack this weekend.
Marked the angle cut for the cluster panel, then cut it.

Making some last minute wearability improvements before Dengar makes his debut this weekend.
I added a thigh garter system to hold the thighs up.
Thanks to my good friend Mike for helping me sew velcro on some thigh straps a couple months ago, and then I added snaps to the straps and snap plates in the thighs.
(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1953/44642860715_1104de5f04.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2b1Wka6)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/2b1Wka6) by daryl doak (https://www.flickr.com/photos/136564629@N02/), on Flickr
Since the garter belt will be worn inside the coveralls, I cut these slits on each side for the thigh straps to pass thru, and sewed them button-hole style to prevent fraying (this fabric frays super bad).
(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1947/45493651712_118cb042de.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2cj7RFo)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/2cj7RFo) by daryl doak (https://www.flickr.com/photos/136564629@N02/), on Flickr
Then I glued some foam in the back of the thighs to help keep them behind the diamond knees.

I'm converting this to be something sorta like an MG42, which is Dengar's screen used weapon.
I've also made a few trooping improvements to the costume:
1. Added a little velcro on lower neck of the coveralls, and to the shoulder bell strap, to better keep it in place.
2. I made boxes, out of poster board, to fill-out my pouches, and I also darkened the pouches with some black paint.
3. I cut some foam that I will use on my shoulders, inside the coveralls, to help pad the weight of the backpack.
We'll see how it all works at the Evergreen troop.
-
That looks pretty good Daryl. Reminds me I need to get to work on my own DLT.
