Title: 08.18.10 Weird Al Concert in Chehalis, WA (Wednesday)
Post by: TK-Tank on June 06, 2010, 07:25:37 PM
I am extending an invitation to the members of Cloud City Garrison to participate in a Garrison Titan event: a Weird Al Yankovic concert to be held in the city of Chehalis, WA on August 18, 2010 at the Southwest Washington Fair. http://southwestwashingtonfair.net/fair-events/weird-al-yankovic-live

CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS--THIS IS A CANON EVENT
The requirements and instructions for each concert are very specific when it comes to the number & types of characters:
There has to be an even number of troopers on either side of Darth Vader. If no Darth Vader is available, there still has to be an even number of troopers.  We can also have one handler and one archivist/photographer to shoot video of our performance if the venue permits video recording.

Sorry, but this event is not open to Rebel Legion costumes.

ARRIVAL TIME:
This show starts at 8:30 p.m. 501st members need to arrive between 1 to 2 hours before the show begins. The absolute latest arrival time is 1 hour prior to the show start time, so don't be late!

PARKING:
They will try to provide at least 3 parking passes. Carpooling is encouraged.

GUESTS:
They will try to provide complimentary seats to guests, if we have any; but the total number of complimentary seats is limited per venue. We'll have to wait and see how many we may be able to get.

FOOD:
They are happy to provide dinner backstage for all 501st performers and handlers.  They'll need a full list of people in our group and any dietary restrictions no less than 7 days prior to show day.  They cannot extend this courtesy to guests.  Performers or handlers accompanied by guests should arrange to eat before arrival.

IMPORTANT UPDATE (08/09/10)
JoshEEE from GT has committed to going to the Chehalis, WA concert. This should be enough troopers to do the show, which I will confirm with the tour manager. Unfortunately, the Lynden, WA show on August 17, 2010 will be canceled.

CHEHALIS APPEARANCE STILL GO!!!
Roster
1. JoshEEE (GT TB / photographer)
2. Zolotkey (CCG TK)
3. My Only Fettish (CCG Gree or BH)
4. The Kreator (CCG Vader)
5. Oomar Galor (CCG spotter)
6. hosaycuervo (CCG TB)
7. Darth Thaddius (GT TB)
8. brother of The Kreator (CCG TK)

That wouldn't be a problem since they said that there can be two additional helmeted characters.

I wish this wasn't on a weekday! Too bad, I'd totally find a way up to it with my TS if it weren't :(

Hope you get enough folks for it!

Yeah, I wish it wasn't on a weekday either. There are actually 2 concerts in WA; the one in Chehalis is the second of the two. The first is the night before in Lynden, which is next to the Canadian border.  What I may do soon is contact the concert promoter about opening this is up for additional costume types.

Excellent!  I was meaning to get in touch with you about this one and glad to see it will be open to CCG as well.  The only Oregon event is the same day as our Garrison picnic, and it's quite a drive and I think I was the only one interested in making it.  This date will work much better, and we should be able to fill the requested roster.

Please put me down as Vader!

Not necessarily. I'm waiting to see who may be interested in doing the concert. If there aren't enough TK's, I can ask the promoter about opening it up to other costume types.

I will probably be contacting Weird Al's promoter very soon about having more non-TK's participate since not a lot appear to be available. I don't think it will be a problem, but we definitely need to get their okay first.

Just wanted to remind folks that we need more characters to make this concert a go!  It's a weeknight, which makes it difficult for many, but it's not a bad drive north of Portland - only about 90 minutes tops.

My brother, Joel, would like to be added as a guest/spotter as I'll need assistance with my Vader gear and he lives only about 30 minutes away from the concert.

This is a Titan Event Matt, it is on their calender, and CCG may help. We only put CCG only on our calender.

I have heard back from the Weird Al concert promoter. He has opened up the costume types to the following:
1. Stormtroopers (first preference)
2. Biker Scouts
3. Sand Troopers
4. Snow Troopers
5. Imperial Guards (least preference)
6. Clone Troopers
7. Tusken Raiders

The preference is to have an even number of troopers to be balanced on either side of Weird Al during the concert. The preference is for a number of anywhere between 6 and 12, but can go as low as 4.

If Darth Vader is available (but not required), he would be positioned in the center of the troopers.

Optional 2 other masked characters, such as Boba Fett.

1 spotter and 1 photographer are permitted. Right now, there is a spotter rostered: Oomar Galor. If he doesn't want to do it, then that would open a spot for your wife to attend. Do you want to roster as a TB either way?

I posted on the Titan forum, but my brother, Joel, lives in Olympia and would like to be listed as a guest.  (And hopefully as an assist to my Vader suit-up process even if just that, then sent back out to wherever guests will be located.)

Thanks, really looking forward to this one.

All right, we have Vader and two unmatched clones (Gree and a 501st clone).  We have a shocktrooper and a TB in the wings.  I don't think Weird Al was looking for that because we don't have any true pairs.  Anyone got any suggestions or alternate costumes they can wear? I would hate to show up and have them say, "No thanks" because we don't have pairs.

As I found out yesterday, Nick's 501st Clone is not ready and won't be in time for the concert.  So we could really use a pair of Biker Scouts if possible, and possibly one more character which could then be listed as part of the two optional slots with Gree.

I will be in contact with the tour manager next week once we have a better idea of who is able to attend and whether they'll approve whatever our roster looks like at the time.

I agree Marc.   Titan  should rally it since it is their territory. They should follow up and give us information as they get it. I know that they invited us, but it should not be David overseeing this one. It is Titan's Event. we are invited guests. I do appreciate that David is willing to help them.

Here's the problem: GT has no members living in the general vicinity of Chehalis. We don't even have one member in Olympia. The nearest members to Chehalis live in Auburn & Renton, which is not particularly close. Also, the Chehalis concert is on a Wednesday night and pretty much anyone who has considered doing the concert has to work the next day. Now, it isn't that GT members won't travel that far south to do an event: there are several members who have rostered for that car show event scheduled for 9/19 (a Sunday) down in Chehalis. That event ends in the afternoon, which gives people plenty of time to get home and rest up for work the next day.

There are some other things compounding the timing of the Chehalis concert: there's another Weird Al concert in Linden, WA the night before. Linden is up by the Canadian border. A few GT members have rostered for that event along with one member of the Outer Rim Squad of the Badlands Garrison. Still, very few are available because it's on a Tuesday night: another work night. We have one member living in Bellingham, which is just a stone's throw from Linden, but that member has never rostered on the GT boards. I plan to email him tonight about his availability for the concert.

The last thing compounding this is that both concerts are immediately after CV. There are a lot of GT members travelling to Orlando for CV, which runs from 8/12 to 8/15. No one who is going to CV has shown any interest in doing either concert, which both occur right after they get back. Logistically for GT, these 2 concerts couldn't have been at a worse time or in worse locations. Had Weird Al been doing the Puyallup Fair or at least anything closer in to Seattle or Spokane, we'd have a much better turn out.

I have sent the following message to the concert tour manager to explain the current situation with how many troopers have rostered for each concert. If there are either not enough members who can attend or no matching pairs of costumes, I have let the tour manager know that it will be up to him to decide how to proceed.

Quote from: TK-Tank
Jay,

With the two Weird Al concerts in Washington state now just under 2 weeks away, it's unclear whether we will have enough troopers available to participate in both concerts.

For the concert in Lynden, WA on August 17, 2010, only 2 troopers have indicated that they can definitely attend. Two more have indicated that they might be able to attend. The two that can attend are a stormtrooper and a Boba Fett. (The individual doing Boba Fett is actually from the neighboring garrison just to the north in Canada.) The two who may be able to attend are another stormtrooper and someone who has both stormtrooper and bike scout costumes and could potentially wear either one.

For the concert in Chehalis, WA on August 18, 2010, only one member from Garrison Titan has indicated that he may be able to attend (a member with stormtrooper & bike scout costumes). However, I have also been in contact with Cloud City Garrison (in Oregon) and several of their members have indicated that they can attend the concert in Chehalis: a Darth Vader, a bike scout, a stormtrooper and a person with two costumes: a Commander Gree (clone trooper) and a Boba Fett.  Unfortunately, none of these costumes are in matching pairs, but the head-count is good.

There are three factors that are adversely affecting the ability of Garrison Titan members to attend either of these concerts:
1. With the exception of one brand new member who lives in Bellingham, WA, there are no members living near either venue.
2. Each concert is on a weeknight, which, together with the distance that members will have to travel to attend, doesn't work well with many members' work schedules.
3. While a number of members have expressed interest to me in attending one of the concerts, the weekend before the concerts is when the "Star Wars Celebration V" convention is occurring in Orlando, FL, and a lot of Garrison Titan members are traveling to Orlando to attend. While most will be back from the convention before the first concert in Lynden on the 17th, many are shipping their costumes separately, so their costumes won't be back before the concerts.

I have sent private messages to a number of members whose costumes meet the concert criteria to see if they can attend. If any more members indicate that they can attend either of the concerts within the next week, I will let you know. Otherwise, if we either don't have enough people to attend or don't have matching pairs of costumes, I will leave it up to you to decide how you would like to proceed.

With best regards,

Michael Hart

Garrison Titan Commanding Officer

6. hosaycuervo (CCG TB)
I'm still planning on showing as well.

I'll need to know sooner than later about what options there are for my wife.  Perhaps one of the guest tickets?

Thanks for explaining about GT availability, all very good reasons for a lower turnout.  Unfortunately Lewis County is outside the limit of where most of either garrison's members can get to on a week night.  Hopefully we'll be able to get two or three from each side and make it a great co-op event.

Hey everyone, I heard back from Jay, the tour manager and wanted to share what he wrote back to me:

Quote from: Jay
Michael -

All we can ever ask is you do the best you can.  If it proves impossible for either or both dates, we will certainly understand.  Thanks for all your diligence.

Jay Levey

Just to let everyone in CCG know, I will probably be writing back to Jay tomorrow to cancel GT's participation in the Lynden, WA concert on the 17th. Today, one of the two troopers who was definitely rostered (from the Outer Rim Squad in B.C.) had to back out due to a medical emergency with a family member. That leaves me with only one definite and two tentatives, which is simply not enough. I contacted over 20 GT members to see if anyone would be available to do either concert, but no one can attend for exactly the reasons that I shared not only with CCG, but with Jay.

When I write to Jay, I will confirm whether the current roster for the Chehalis, WA concert will be acceptable and I will notify CCG as soon as I know his response.

On behalf of Garrison Titan, I want to personally thank all of the CCG members who want to appear at the Chehalis, WA concert on the 18th. If I can encourage anyone else from GT to go, I will let you know.

This is a copy of my latest email to Jay, the tour manager:

Quote from: TK-Tank
Jay,

I have some good news, and I have some bad news. The good news is that I believe we have now enough troopers to do the show in Chehalis, WA on August 18. A total of 5 troopers have said that they can do the Chehalis show: 2 bike scouts, 1 stormtrooper, 1 clone trooper and 1 Vader.

Unfortunately, a trooper withdrew from the Lynden, WA show on August 17, leaving us with only 1 definite trooper. Since I have been unable to find any other available members for that date, I will regrettably have to withdraw our support from that show.

With best regards,
Mike

How do we get in?  Do we pay at the general fairgrounds entrance, convince the security guards that our bins don't contain ten pounds of C-4, then tell the security folks at the stadium to let us backstage?
Which brings up the next question: is the concert in the main (open air) stadium?  Or at another building?

I asked several questions last week of Jay including whether any 501st members would need to pay admission to get into the fair grounds. I have been assured just a few minutes ago that no one will have to pay. I'm working out which entrance should be used. There may only be one as it doesn't look that big to me.

He would like each members' name in case he needs them. Since I don't know all of you, could you PM them to me? Thanks. I'll need them ASAP.

According to the Southwest Washington Fair web page, the performance will be at the main grandstands, which means lots of seating for a huge audience.  It also means some kind of bizarre 'backstage' setup since there is no 'back' for a stage, just the open arena.  Could be interesting.  I just hope it cools down some, 'cause I'm not excited about being in armor in 100+ degree weather

Hey folks, I'll be coming down to troop this one with you tomorrow...
I don't think we have definite word back from Jay on entrance, contacts, etc but I'm hoping to get that today.

Could the folks trooping post (or PM) me some real names and phone numbers? It can be one contact for all of you guys, or all of you...that way we can get in touch down there before we're supposed to go backstage.  It will especially help if we get asked for an access list or something for the fair.  Mine is 206-714-3421 (Josh Eash).

Bringing the Scout Trooper, which I don't think I've worn since Starlight with you guys in 2008!  Right now, it still looks like I'm driving down alone for this, but I'm holding out hope that I might be able to recruit a friend or two to join me.  Also going up to see the band in Lynden tonight, so it's going to be a busy couple of days of driving. :D

I have the names for everyone who is going to the Chehalis concert from GT & CCG. I'll be emailing the names and JoshEEE's contact information to Jay and the local event coordinator in Chehalis later today.

On behalf of Garrison Titan,
I want to express my personal thanks
to everyone in Cloud City Garrison
that is making the trip to Chehalis tomorrow
to do the concert.

It is very much appreciated. :D

There's another TB from GT who is interested in going to the Chehalis concert. He's over in Spokane. If there's another TB from CCG who wants to go, we'd need to know tonight.

If we need another clean TK, my brother who assisted us at the Portland concert could wear my TK gear since I'll be Vader.  Let me know and I'll pack it with us tomorrow for the drive up.

That might work. If your brother wears your TK, that would match Zolotky. There'd be one extra TB with my guy from Spokane, but he'd be paired with Theresa in her clone.

David, yes, please bring the TK: the promoter gave the green light for the additional GT TB, so we'll definitely need your brother as another TK. Thanks!

I've updated the roster. There will be a total of 2 TK's, 3 TB's (2 are from GT), 1 CC and 1 SL.

I hope everyone has a safe trip and great time!

Excellent, this is shaping up to be a good sized group!  My brother is so excited to get to participate.  He's on his way over now to fit the TK armor, and then we're heading up.  Probably will arrive no later than 5pm.

Do we just flash our CCG shirts to get in to the fair, or is there a special entrance we should use?

Unfortunately, the guy that Jay said would contact me (a coordinator in Chehalis named Kenny) about the Chehalis show never did. The best thing to do will be to contact JoshEEE as he should be there by 4 pm. Thad (Darth Thaddius) will probably also be there by 4 pm.

I'm leaving right now....my cell phone is posted above, so feel free to call and group up when we get there.
If they don't have an admission list at the door or anything, I'll just pay to go in and try to figure stuff out from there. Adult admission is only 8 bucks, so I don't think it should break anyone's bank if we end up having to pay.  Plus, you get to visit the fair until it's time for us to rehearse, so yay for that.  8)

See you all down there!

I am here, I have all our passes. They dont want us bringing armor in until about 545 so if we could all gather a little before that, that would be perfect.  Call when you get here and I will meet you near a gate with your passes.

Awesome night and great show!

In Portland, and even last night, the stage manager told us that the Texas Garrison in Dallas was the best group they had because of their choreography and everyone in line properly...

Well our lots of planning and practice paid off big time because after we came off stage, Hawkeye actually came off the stage and tapped Dustin on the shoulder and said, "Better than Dallas!, then rushed back up on stage.  So awesome!

Actually the Keyboard player kept telling us that. Awesome work guys.
I hope somebody got some video.

Well I definitely had a blast.  I guess if I only do one or two events a year they have to be awesome!
Anyway, I missed the chance to tell the two or three guys that took extremely good care of us coming offstage how much I appreciated their help.
Thanks Josh for getting this set up for us!

Well, it was Ruben who was telling us before the show how awesome Dallas was, as also reiterating that when the lights go down, "Get the $#&% off the stage! :) "   But Hawkeye was the one who told us immediately after we stepped off stage last night that we succeeded in outdoing Dallas.

And I looked up the Dallas performance on YouTube -- they had a much larger stage and a full roster, but we totally outdid them in the choreography dept!  I really hope the video of our performance comes out well.

I looked up Dallas' performance too, and I have to say, I think we had much tighter synchronization.  At least, it seemed so from my end of the line.  :)

Just finished uploading the video and pictures.  Unfortunately, the video was not so great. It's kind of a bummer, but we did get some good photos, so all was not lost.

"Weird Al" Concert Photos (http://www.josheee.com/alconcert)

There are some really good ones up there.

Link to the Youtube video is also there.  My friend Lisa also got a few seconds captured of it. Although it's very short, it's much nicer to look at and is located here:   Facebook Link (http://www.facebook.com/#!/video/video.php?v=1378432577161&ref=mf). She tried to tape it too, but her battery died right after she started recording. Such a bummer...but better than nothing. 8)

I should note that I have (literally) hundreds of other photos that came out. Matthew shot pretty much continously through the song, and I could almost make a video out of it (it's pretty awesome actually). I cherry picked the best ones and made sure there were shots of each of us up there, but if anyone wants me to upload more photos, let me know and I'll be happy to do so. There are 3GB of photos I haven't uploaded yet, and although they're all similar to the ones I posted, they are available in case you want to dig through them all looking for that one perfect shot of you on stage....

By the way, even though we didn't get video, it's pretty clear from the photos that our dancing was almost perfectly synchronized. You can totally see it in the pictures, and I think that's pretty awesome.

Get me those photos (in some kind of order hopefully), and a copy of the video, and I'll splice them all together into a video.....

That would be cool. I spun through them on the back of the camera and while there are some gaps you'd have to fill with stills, but we have the audio from the youtube video, so could (sort of) be done. There are parts where it's almost 3 or 4fps for 9 or 10 seconds at a time.

I'll start an upload tonight. With the video, it's going to be close to 5 gigs, but that's why Al Gore invented broadband.

I put them up on the GT gallery (http://www.garrisontitan.com/THX1410/thumbnails.php?album=446) and also on my own site  (http://www.josheee.com/alconcert).
Also have the uncompressed files from those two locations here (http://www.josheee.com/alconcert/highrez/).
I also put up the video and every single picture you took while we were on stage here (http://www.josheee.com/alconcert/rawfiles/) for Cooter Davis, who, will hopefully be turning them all into a video. The images at that location are the originals.

Hopefully that works, but if you'd like to grab and post them anywhere else, feel free to use any or all of those images and videos.   Thanks again for taking some great ones for us!

Gonna have to give me a bit to work on this.
I've already cut the video to where Cell phones is no longer on the video.
I've also stripped the audio from the video, and started importing the photos.
There are so many photos each one can take up half a second and I'll still have some
to spare....hopefully it turns out good.

josheee,
Thanks for the link.  I have been talking with David, The Kreator, about getting the pictures up in our, CCG, gallery soon.  If it is ok with you, or the GT leadership, I will include the GT gallary pictures in my report. Would a link to your, josheee, web page be ok; to add in my report?
