Title: One of the Faithful Has Fallen
Post by: Cooter Davis on May 15, 2010, 12:56:05 AM
I recently spoke to Heather James about following through on her donation to Doernbecher's for her son's,Sam, birthday event 4-24, and she gave me some rather upsetting news. She asked me if she could donate it in the name of Luke who was a patient up until recently at Doernbecher's. She told me how her family had a picture of some of us, with Luke, at an Event at the hospital, and how much he loved "Star Wars." I racked my brain for a minute and asked if Luke's last name was Jansen. She was quite shocked when I asked as yes that was him.
I remember Luke quite distinctly as his name was is sorts of ESB characters. I even had a conversation with both Martin, and Stephanie, about the names.
Steve, Luke's dad,is a huge star wars fan and just had to name his son after a character.

Luke passed away just last week. He was only 7 years old. To make the tragedy worse two days after Luke passed Steve's father collapsed and passed as well.

When I was told this I had to compose myself because I just wanted to cry.

I can't even begin to explain how much I love making the children happy when we go through the hospitals,
because you just never know how important it is to them when they are in such a dark place, and that little bit of light we give them could be their last.....

I know, all to well, what that difference can make. My brother was 7 when he died of Leukemia. We didn't have hospital visits back then, so it is definitely a good thing whenever you guys are able to turn that large amount of suffering into an ounce of joy.

It is always sad to hear when a young one passes, like this. Even harder on the family when it is two close loved ones that fall.

Sad news Tony. I remember him also. This incites me even more to keep making a difference. I love the events we do in the name of all the charities, but visiting these kids in person is sometimes a life changing experience. To know that we make such a positive impact by just sharing our love of the Star Wars culture for a couple of hours fills my spirit up.
So I would like to rally the troops, lets make it a mission to visit Doernbechers and Shriners Childrens hospitals before the year is up. What say you all?!..................ol tony kenobi

I agree with Old Tony. I was on that troop, and though I can't remember exactly witch one Luke was, I saw the difference our visit made in the kids we saw. This is one of the biggest reasons I troop. There wre a few times I was glad I had a hemet on. Pick the date for Dornbechers and Shriners, and I'll be there again.    Will
