I forgot to post about this earlier in the week, but the show replays several times.
It's on the Science Channel (Comcast Ch. 272, HD 772) Tuesdays at 10pm. Each week, Dr. Michio Kaku explains how science and technology from Science Fiction could be made in the real world using today's known science.
This week's episode was dedicated to the lightsaber. I missed it, but it's on at 2am, so I've got the DVR set. Will post a recap after I watch it tomorrow night.
Last week's episode covered space travel, and what would be required to travel to the next closest galaxy. Using anti-matter, it would be possible to do it in 40 years going nearly the speed of light. Of course, it would be a one way trip for humans, even if a ship was created that could do it - not even considering the food, water and other necessities required for a 40 year trip on a somewhat small ship. Anyway, it's a great show. Looking forward to seeing how he would build a real lightsaber!

I ended up watching it before work this morning. Very cool show!
He broke down each detail and since laser light would simply go on forever, not stop at 3' from the hilt, another method would need to be used. Plasma, such as that used for welding, was the answer. Except to control it, and be able to duel, some sort of containment would be required. Luckily, plasma can be controlled with magnetic fields, and for dueling, a high grade ceramic can withstand the incredible heat, yet also hold up to dueling.
The most incredible to me, was the power source. Nano tubes! Trillions of nano tubes can fit inside the hilt, and could store all the power required to generate the energy required for a 3' plasma torch. A fan in the base of the hilt would suction oxygen to the emitter where it would basically work just like the welding torches - but larger.
Highly recommended if you can find it on your cable guide this week. It should be replaying 3-4 more times until the new episode next Tuesday.

That's awesome! They even have clips from the episode talking about how a real Death Star would be possible!
