Title: MISSION COMPLETE: 09-26-2009, 7th Annual Pig Bowl Flag, Saturday
Post by: tavrikgannon on August 08, 2009, 01:11:38 PM
Kyle, Rick, along with T'igor, Jodi, Matt and myself did this last year. It was a pretty cool gig. It was a bit chilly, but it was a lot of fun. As you can see, it is an annual event and Cloud City has been asked to show up again. Last year we walked out onto the field to meet with the family that this charity event was for. This year, it looks like they are going to bring us all out on some sort of vehicle.

I know that there is an event already scheduled for that day, but if there is anyway anyone else can participate, it would be good.

Let's help this family out!

- Bill

2009/7th Annual Pig Bowl Flag Football Game
Location: The Dalles, Oregon at The Dalles Wahtonka High School (Freshman Campus)
Address: 3601 w 10th St. The Dalles, OR 97058
Date: 09/26/2009 (Saturday)
Time 7 PM (1900 hrs) Try to be there by 6 PM (1800 hrs)

For: Jennifer Magill
Local The Dalles resident who was diagnosed with Stage 4 (Doesn?t get any worse than this.) Rectal cancer. Similar to Farrah Fawcett. She has been doing Chemo for 3 years (unheard of for this length of time). She has recently been trying to get into a special program in Seattle but even if she gets selected they could not afford to go there due to her not working anymore and her husband (Jason) having a lesser paying job after the Aluminum Plant shutdown. They have a 6 year old boy as well. She is 33 years and having this kind of cancer this early in life is pretty rare.

1) Contact an Outside Entity:
Rattlehead

2) Determine Security Issues :
There will be a decent amount of Law Enforcement around since Law enforcement will be putting on the event. Honestly, security will not be an issue. If something were to arise then contact Rattlehead.

3) Communicate the Event Information to the Garrison/Legion :
Can anyone head this up and coordinate with Rattlehead?

4) Arrange for Water :
As soon as I know how many are going to be there I got you all covered.

5) Make Food Arrangements, if possible :
There will be Pizza sold there for a $1 a slice to raise money. Please help out! Sometimes there is Pizza left over and you are all welcome to some if there is some left over.

7) Arrange for a Handler(s) :
Security is not an issue in my opinion. We have several staff members around handling all aspects of the event.

Backup Trooper :
? I hope there will be no one left to be back up as everyone will be there.

9) Contact the local press :
This has already been taken care of on a local aspect. If you can contact more news down there in Portland then awesome.

10) Be Early :
6 PM(1800 hrs)

11) Supervise Trooper Activity :
There will be several people at the event to inform who ever needs to be notified that someone has crossed whatever line it is that they have crossed.

12) Post a Follow Up & Thank You :
I hope to be able to do this! Meaning I hope someone is able to come by and hang out with us.

13) Notify the Command Staff About Problems :
Let Rattlehead know of any problems or your Commander.

ADDITIONAL NOTE:
There is an after party every year and you are all invited. It is a lot of fun and if anyone is going to spend the night and drink we can arrange a DD to get you to your place of sleeping be it in a tent or hotel. People are welcome to tent it in my back yard this year as well. I?m 2 blocks from the party location.
Let me know in advance if this will be the case.
Rattlehead/Curt

Rattlehead here! We are gearing up for the Pig Bowl again this year. Looking forward to meeting you all. This year cause is pretty important I think. We are hoping as many of you are coming down as possible.

Thanks in advance.

This just in from Curt:

Bill,
I have a lot of people asking if Vader is going to show, any ideas there?

I was hoping a central character was going to be there as I think it would rock if we could get that person to take a ride on the Life Flight Helicopter to the event. It would be about a 5 minute hop. Picture Lord Vader landing at the the event on the field and walking out of the helicopter with 2 Mando's there to greet him and of course he would bring the game ball. Pretty cool!
Of course this all hinges on Vader showing and having some peper work filled out for Life Flight and Life flight being available and not getting called out on a call. You never know when they are needed.

I was hoping some Rebels would show as well but I understand everyone is busy or tired or can't afford the trip.

The way things are shaping up this is seems to be the biggest year we are going to have so far. People are really talking about it.

The guys are asking if you guys are coming back this year againa nd looking forward to it. Remember there is the party afterward as well.

We will see you in 3 weeks.

This is 3 weeks away. If there is anyone not doing another event that day, and can make the trek out there, it will be greatly appreciated. Kyle, Rick, Matt and myself, along with Jodi and T'igor did this last year. We had a great time, and it looks like this year is going to be even bigger yet.

To echo Allan's words.... rally troopers. We do need a Vader!

Let me know, asap!

Thanks!

Is Patrick afraid of flying? Still working the Vader fly in on the chopper thing.

Let me know if he is interested in doing this.

I sent in the request about him flying in the helicopter, but I haven't got a response in regard to that. Just that he was willing to come as Vader.

Bill,

Obviously there is no requirment for the helicopter ride just thought it would be cool and it is not a total go with Life Flight at this point. I will keep you posted.

It really is. And these people are really hospitable. They had an after-game party afterwards where we all just hung out and had a very good time. The whole community really comes out for these yearly events.

This is our second time going back to this event. I am sure this can easily become one of those yearly events for us to participate in.

For those going, I suggest to dress warmly. Even though it is late September, it is a bit chilly over there. What can I say? It is the Gorge, after all. I remember T'igor had a cold last year and he was pretty well bundled up. I don't know how Kyle put up with the cold in his Clone. I do remember I was in the Officer and there were times when I was feeling the brisk breeze.

Something to keep in mind, everyone!

I am sad to see that not more of you could come down. I understand that it is not always easy time or cost wise. I do appreciate the effort I am just sad that Chewie and little Ani won't be there.

Weather should be good. Low wind and temp should be tolerable.

I don't expect you to be in costume for the whole thing I would just hope up through half time then at the beginning of the 3rd quarter you guys could call it and go in and change then go grab some grub.

I got food and drink for all of you.

See you Sat.

Guys,

This is a FUN event. It should say something that a spotter had fun. Yes, it was cold. But that was the only problem, I had with the event. There were a lot of pictures see here (http://www.cloudcitygarrison.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=45949). I think the intresting thing about this event is the way they score things.  Yes, each time a team makes a goal they earn points. However, what is intresting is that in the middle of a play the score, on one team or another, would go up because of donations made; to a team.  Please correct me, but I think the score last year was 132 to 99 (or some where in there).

Matt is right. We do things different and allow people to kick $50 for a touchdown for your favorite team. The person that makes the donation is announced over the PA so it is a little incentive for businesses to do that.

Last 2 years scores:

2007
Actual Score
Oregon Cops 22     Washington Cops 20
On The Scoreboard
Oregon Cops 224     Washington Cops 593

2008
Actual Score
Oregon Cops 0     Washington Cops 9
On The Scoreboard
Oregon Cops 519     Washington Cops 360

Just goes to show the kind of support we have been getting over the years.

So, I am doing this event this Saturday. We will have Patrick, as Vader; and Ralph, as the Scout. Matt will be on hand for spotting duty and I will be wearing my version 1.0 Mando (hopefully for the last time).

Looks like they arranged (unless unforseen circumstances develope) to have Life Flight come in to fly one of the costumers in. Initially, it was to be Patrick, as Vader. But, as it happens, all of the necessary information wasn't submitted in time.

So, who should be making their grand entrance, via chopper? That's right, baby, me (International 48 Hours of Bill)!

The plan is this:

Vader and Scout will travel from BIMART to field in a 2009 Jeep Wrangler with the Family.

Scout and Vader will lead family out onto the field.

Chopper comes in, Mando exits presents game ball to Vader and presents Offical Coin to Ref!

I was hoping someone had a Star Wars Coin that we could use and then give to Gavin that is Jennifer's son. Any ideas there?

Chopper lifts off/lands at baseball diamond.

We all do intros and pictures/game time

I was hoping you guys could troop till the end of halftime then go in and change.

Hopefully tons of people will do pics.

Make sure Matt takes lots of pics if not video tape the whole thing where the chopper comes in.

Curt

I am a bit excited. I've always wanted to fly in a helicopter, just once. But I hate flying.... afraid of heights. I suppose it is a good thing that it will only be like a 5 minute flight!

Does anybody have anything in the way of a Star Wars themed challenge coin that they wouldn't mind donating to give to this kid? I know I got two of them, when we did the garrison challenge coins. I just need to find them.

Please LMK ASAP!

Patrick is coming over to pick me up. We are carpooling out together. I am still waiting to hear if he has room for you, as well, so that we can all carpool together.

I will look for the garrison coins, since I got two. But if you guys have spare challenge coins, go ahead and bring them. We can decide which one to give the kid when we get there..... because there is a good chance that I won't be able to find mine. So it will be nice to have something else as a back up.

Things are shaping up. I did some upgrades to the Mando - new holsters (did I already mention that? I can't remember) for the Mavericks and I have the clone knees situated.

I tore through my place last night, looking for my challenge coins. Of course, they were in the last place I looked (which should have been the first place to look) - in my 501st letterman Jacket!

So, I have that packed away to give to the kid. I also found an extra proton patch, so I was going to give that to him, as well.

This should be a fun event. I wish more people could come out and enjoy the event. But thankfully, we have Patrick, Ralph and Matt to help out with this one.

Looks like I will need to be there a little bit before 6pm, since I have to sign some papers in the flight hanger by 6:15. This helicopter ride should be interesting....

Matt, I have got the transportation secured. Meet at my place at 4PM. We will all leave from my place at 4PM. Got it? That is 4PM, or 1600 hours!

Oh, and be sure to bring your camera. This ought to be a photo-rich event, especially with the helicopter ride and the presentation of the game ball, and challenge coin to the kid!

I'm excited about this event. I can't wait. See you guys tomorrow!

I don't want to miss the amount by a whole bunch but just to give a conservative estimate we are talking 15K at least. There is probably more but I will let you all know when I know.

Thank you all for coming down and helping.

You were all a big hit.

Gavin (the boy of the family) was still talking about it as I dropped off the family. He was saying I got autographs of all the Star Wars people and Vader looked awesome. He had so much fun and I think he was going to keep his parents up all night talking about it.

Congrats to the Madalorian on a successful intro/flight and landing. That was so cool.

Vader, thank you so much for coming down. With so many kids this year you really made a big hit.

And for the Scout, you were my personal favorite so I was thrilled to have you there.

You guys again were fantastic!

Hopefully we raised more money for this family then what I have posted and hopefully we have more of you come out next year.

This was an awesome event! Special thanks to those who made it out this year to make it a success (Ralph, Matt and Patrick)!

This was a really great event. The crowds loved us (there was a kid there from last year who was asking about Rick), the players loved us, the family was very appreciative of having us on-hand.

Surprisingly, as much as I am afraid of heights, the helicopter ride in was totally awesome! I was beaming - grinning from ear to ear! Then we hit some of those turbulent Gorge winds and then I would get spooked, but other than that, the helicopter ride was a real treat! Thanks, Curt for making all of this happen!

So, basically, what we did was Vader, Scout and our unofficial 1st Air Cav/spotter escorted the family to the field, via Jeep. Everyone assembled on the field, waiting for the game ball to arrive. (The premise was that Darth Vader commissioned a bounty hunter to obtain a game ball for this event).

Those Lifeflight guys were really great! They flew over the city, and around the field (a couple of times) before I touched down. I had a couple of wardobe malfunctions along the way (one of my side holsters popped off before I got to the airfield, and one of my plates came undone). One of the crewmen fixed me up before I exited the helicopter. As I got out of the chopper, they handed me my rifle and the game ball and I was off.

I ran straight to Vader, bowed down before him and gave him the ball. He then passed the ball off to one of the refs. Because of the limited space in the helicopter, my rangefinder was already in the down position. So I side stepped Vader, spotted the kid, cocked my head a little, and walked over to him. I handed my rifle off to Ralph to hold for me, while I reached into one of my pouches to give the kid a garrison challenge coin and a couple of patches.

Needless to say, this family was touched by the exhibition. To boot, this event raised $11,325 (just from the nights take of the admission and donations). I don't know if we can tack that on to our funds raised for charity, but we were on hand for the event.

From what Curt, and a few others said, there was even more money in the bank, already. This, being their 7th year doing this event (our 2nd), was the highest grossing event to date!

This is an event that can be expected to be a yearly event for Cloud City Garrison. I would hope that more people would show up next year, as this is a very worthy cause. Sure, it is a stretch to get there, due to its location. But it is a very worth-while and noble event. We are clearly wanted and appreciated there.

The after parties are usually pretty good, too. Lots of food and drink, to the hearts content - except this year. The party location was changed at last minute, so it wasn't as good as last year. But the intent was there - the District Attorney, himself, had opened up his place for the after party. There were snacks and beer... we had some snacks and stayed for a little while. We hit Taco Bell on the way home.

All in all, a great event. To use Rick's event rating system, I would have given this a 10 out of 5 Wookiee Cookies (just for the helicopter ride and fan appreciation, alone)!

Are you ready?

$19,310

Pretty crazy that we have come this far.

Thanks you for those that showed. My sons and daughter have still been hearing talk at school about the "Star Wars guys" at the Pig Bowl. Everyone take care and I will be on a few times this year saying hi and if possible I will come down and visit.

Long live the Empire!

Thanks Bill, glad to have your support. All of you guys just enhanced what we have been doing all along. It made it better and richer and that is what it is all about besides putting smiles on children.

Thanks all!

Well, I have certain passions in my life. And any chance I get where I can help out the law enforcement community and do some charity work, as well, I am all over it!

Anytime I can rub elbows with cops and make kids happy, I am having a good day!

Well it is official we have the final amount and will be handing a check to the family today.

I have to update the amount as we have had an anonymous donation...

$20310.

Very very sorry about not getting more photos to you as soon as I had hoped. Right after the Pig Bowl I have been swamped. The holidays have not helped as I'm sure all of you have been busy as well. I have someone working on putting photos together to send out and I hope to have them very soon. Now that I have said this. I have some bad news.

Jennifer Erin (Barney) Magill, 33, died Dec. 29, 2009 after a long battle with cancer.
She was born on July 15, 1976 in Hood Riverand grew up in Hood River and The Dalles, graduating from Wahtonka High School in 1994.
After high school, she attended Western Culinary Institute graduating with a degree in culinary arts in 1996. She married Jason Magill in 1997 and they welcomed their son, Gavin, in 2003. The family lived in Mosier and The Dalles, and she worked at several local banks.
She was a wife and mother who enjoyed cooking and traveling her entire life.
She is survived by her husband, Jason Magill; son, Gavin Magill; father, Bill Barney; mother and father-in-law, Darryl and Leona Magill; grandmother, Gayla Hill and countless friends and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Tanith (Karen) Barney.
Many in the community came to know her through the annual Pig Bowl, and the family wishes to offer their sincerest thanks to all those who contributed to the fund and supported her through this event.
She requested that anyone interested in making a financial contribution in her memory do so by giving to a savings fund for Gavin?s future education. To fulfill this wish, the Jennifer Magill Memorial Fund has been set up at Columbia River Bank.

Again I want to thank all of you from the CCG and with your help it has made her last few months that much better. I spoke to Jason her husband and he said that she remained in high spirits right up to the end and that he plans on being back out next year for another Pig Bowl and I hope you all will be there as well. Take care and I will be getting photos out soon.
