People, I can't post here, so please see if you can make this one! These kids are great.
Barry
-------------------------------------------------
We've been contacted by a member of this group. It is group for, and the families of students/children with Autism or Aspergers (form of Autism). It is a Game Club. They are having a large Game Club Picnic at Oaks Park. This is the type of group that would absolutely adore any Star War's characters that showed up 'in person'. These kids and families have a lot of fun at these Game Club gatherings. It's a time when they can be themselves with people who understand them, etc. They are GREAT kids. I know some personally. Star Wars costumes only at this one.
What: Portland Aspergers Network Game Club Picnic
Where: Oaks Part picnic area - Outside Area 15
When: Sunday, July 26th
Time: 11:00 am to ?
07.22.09 UPDATE:
===================================
Michelle has secured the Dance Pavilion for us to change in.
Picnic location is area 15.
When you go into oaks park go to the right, away from the roller coaster, and you'll come to the
"Kiddie Land." Area 15 is right next to Kiddie Land, and behind the octopus.
Their event starts at 11:00 but they expect the largest gathering to be around noon.
I plan to be there around 10:30ish.
Water will be provided.
Maps to Oaks Park.... Area 15. Its near the stage.

They asked how many people usually 'volunteer' to appear at an event like this. I mentioned at least 5-6. She was thrilled. It's far enough out-Let's make this a good appearance!

I would love to join in on this. I have been several characters at Oaks Park in the past, most notably a Care Bear and a Blue Dinosaur. :)
Hopefully by the time this rolls around, I'll be an official 501st member.
-
I am intrested in joining as either a spotter or with my 1st Air Cavalry uniform. If permitted.

One thing:
The weatherperson is predicting temps in the 100 deg. (F) range. The Kreator ask me, in my myspace page: ... I hope we've got a lot of shade and plenty of water. :)
What do we know about shade & water for this weekend?
-
From what I remember of Oaks Park, it is pretty open, not much in the way of shade. But I could be mistaken. Cooter did state that they will have water provided for us.

If it's in the picnic table area, there are a lot of trees -- at least last time I was there over a decade ago... The forecast today was updated saying it will be in the 90s and not reach 100, but either way it's going to be HOT.
-
Good thing... I hate hot weather!
- Bill
-
I'd really like to help out with this one, but it's on my 30th birthday......and well, I'll probably be drinking my aging sorrows away...
(actually more likely going up to GameWorks in Seattle).
But I'd love to help spot again, so I'll keep an eye out for other future opportunities.
-
is there a meeting and changing spot set for this . I would love to make it for a hour or two if I can get away from my bathroom remodel ths weekend
-
First post updated with additional information...
-
All of you, have a genuinely (word?) good time with these families. They will with you....
I'll pray that you're not too hot. 8)

Everyone was great. nice visiting with folks. and a Friend of mine from Over 30 years ago stopped by. WOW.

Awesome pics :D

Lisa, one of the co-ordinators just called me to express how thankful she and the Autism Group are, so I told her I'd pass it on here.
They were flabbergasted by the number of characters that came and said she knew it was going to be very hot, yet you guys suited up anyway!
One of the TK's tried to get her son's attention but he wouldn't make eye contact despite loving it, so s/he (TK) kept following until s/he got a handshake! That's the way to do it.
You guys made the kids and parents feel great.
I sort of had a personal stake with this group and thank you personally for coming through and trooping this event. Even though they are not able to make a donation, they are very appreciative.
Barry
