Did a little helmet trimming, removing most of the return edge on the helmet so the trim fits better.

After:

I also did some sanding on the rangefinder, and added some contour so it fits the shape of the helmet.

Looking good, Daryl! I still think you should allow me to store a few of my bins in your garage!

Continued work on the helmet.
Drilled holes and test fit the back greeblie:

Then worked on placement of the rangefinder, disk, and screw cap (trim is there just for visual placement of greeblies):

I'm going to attach the rangefinder before painting (rangefinder is olive, but antenna remains metal), but I have a couple of decisions to make:
Q1. How to attach the hollow-back rangefinder? Use screws from behind or just glue the edges?
A1. To ensure it's secure, I think I'm going to do a combination of both.
Q2. Do I attach the metal antenna before or after painting?
A2. I don't think it will be feasible to paint the rangefinder while the antenna is attached, so I was thinking of cutting a little access hole, on the helmet dome, behind the rangefinder. This will allow me access to the screw to attach the antenna.
-
I +1 the idea of making the antenna removable. Great work so far!

Made quite a bit of progress since my last update.
I decided to E6000 some bolts into the back of the four corners of the rangefinder. I also decided to not attach the rangefinder before painting. This made the painting easier since the metal antenna wasn't attached.
Drilled the holes to attach the rangefinder and screw caps.

IGS suggested that I attach the imperial disks using rivets, so I drilled the holes in those.

Next, I lightly sanded the helmet and the weather improved, so I was able to finally do some painting. After a few iterations of painting and sanding (to remove runs), I finally got it done.

Today I attached the rangefinder, imperial disks, spine greeblie, and trim. I'm happy with how it turned out.
