Title: Greedo10360's TB Build
Post by: CadBane3 on November 05, 2016, 07:07:31 PM
Hello everybody,

Starting a scout trooper and thought I would start a thread to help me through the process. I've ordered the armor and helmet from Altmann and the armor should be here in a few weeks and the helmet is probably a few months away (he's a busy guy). In the mean time, I've been picking up the soft parts (as permitted on the credit card)! :)

I have my gloves from Wampa Wear and ordered a balaclava. I was eyeballing this jump suit and was curious if anybody has any thoughts. I'll need to remove the epaulets and the patch thing, but I like that the neck likely doesn't need altering. Any input?

http://thumbs3.picclick.com/d/w1600/pict/152018276130_/New-Adult-SFI-32a-1-Certified-Single-Layer-Racing.jpg

Today, I purchased the suede that I'll need and I need to pick up the elastic strapping (easy enough to find).

Otherwise, I think I'll have the boots and cumberbund/pouches made but I want the flight suit first, so I can dial in the sizing.  Also, I need the flak vest and may learn to sew and make that myself, which my mom is excited about. :)

Anyway, let me know if anybody has any thoughts on the flight suit above. Thanks!

Well, I went ahead and bought the flight suit above. I like the idea of not being flammable! Lol

I also ordered and received my suede. There's a company in Portland called Tandy Leathers, and it was pretty reasonable. Once the suit gets here, I'll get started on the mudflap and suede patches.

In the mean time, my armor and helmet should be shipped in a week or so, and I'm excited to get started on that.

More updates and perhaps some pictures (and probably lots of questions) in the next few weeks!

Flight suit came today. Thank you ebay! The size/fit is pretty good and it isn't too hot. It's a bit heavy, but that's not a terrible thing. It's dry clean only, which I would have assumed once I add the suede to it anyway. Here is my test fitting.

Here is a closer image of the neck:

I liked this flight suit because it had the neck collar already completed and that's one less thing for me to learn how to sew. I'll need to remove the patch and the epaulets, but does anybody have any feedback? Look good?

That's a good fit. The cuffs should tuck nicely into your gloves and boots.

Looks good. Couple of suede add-ons and you're on your way to tree hugger status :)

Thanks! Got the suede, just need to do a bit of research into how large the "patches" will need to be. I was thinking about waiting until my armor gets here but may get impatient.  :D

Started to work on my flight suit and trying to figure out the riding patches. They seem to be a bit challenging, so I'm working on a template first out of shipping paper (use what you have, right?). Here is my first effort. It seems to match the photos online but I wanted to see about getting input from anybody that knows. Please let me know your input. The top of the template is right underneath the belt that will be right at my waist line. Too big? Too small? Too wide? Any help would be appreciated. If you want me to pin them to the suit and see where they fit while being worn, I could do that too.

Check the CRL photos in relation to where the knee armor sits and the suede ends.

Check the CRL photos in relation to where the knee armor sits and the suede ends.

Will do. Thanks! I posted on the biker scout network and got some feedback on the shape as well. Need to make some changes and try again. The CRL says it ends above the knee but the reference photo that everybody posts shows it underneath the knee armor. It's just tough to see black suede on black flightsuit!  :D

They look a bit wide and long, but its hard to say for sure not knowing how it sits on you with your armor. I can dig out my wife's templates, and her flight suit if you need/want any comparisons.  Where are you located? Maybe we can get together if you need any assistance.
We also may have some of the strapping you need to go around the legs if you haven't gotten any yet.

Thanks Chris! I bought the strapping but would love to see the templates. I'm in Vancouver but can get anywhere to meet, except downtown, at night, lately. Lol

Here is version 2.0 of the possible riding patches template. Thank you everybody for your feedback and after hours (maybe a slight exaggeration) of pouring over Lancer requests, I have trimmed and come up with this:

The bottom of the template would be just above my kneecap. There seems to be a good deal of variation on lancer requests as to how high up the suede would go, probably because it is covered, but I want to be as correct as possible. Please let me know your thoughts.
Thanks again!

Definitely looks better, but hard to tell without the knee armor. It will be helpful for when you get your suede.

those new templates look good.

Here is what we used for Judy's flight suit, she is short so these prob too small for you, but gives you an idea of how we did them.

Ran in to a bit of a setback with the flight suit today. It is rather thick and in doing a test run to see if I could fit it in a sewing machine, there is just no way that I can get the machine to work down the leg, as there is so much material that needs to get out of the way, especially when you get further down the thigh. May need to investigate any of the folks on the BSN that are much more experienced at sewing to see if they can take on a commission to just add the patches. I really like this flight suit and the fit, and the cuffed wrists and ankles, so I don't really want to scrap the whole thing.

I did make progress on removing the patch and the epaulets, so all was not lost.

Also, I finished sewing the liner for my TK bin:

At least I managed some progress!

Well, I mothballed the racing suit for now. Still going to work on it but ordered one from Max's Sci Fi in the mean time. And HOT DIGGITY, look what came in the mail today!

My Altmann's armor and bucket!

The lense on the bucket popped out in shipping, so I got right to it.

I just love this helmet and it is huge inside, so I can't wait to start working on it.

I ran out and started buying elastic and velcro. I then re-read Pandatroopers build thread. Lots to do!

Thanks. I may be able to make it work but it bunches up in my legs quite a bit, so now that I have the armor, I can figure out if it's salvageable.

Started working on the easy parts while I wait for some additional supplies. Got a few straps for the forearms ready to sew. This is 1" elastic.

Moved on the checking out the biceps, but they need 1 3/8 inch elastic, which I have ordered but don't have yet. In looking at them, the greeblies are the same. Shouldn't one of them have the dots on the other side?

Perhaps a veteran builder can opine. I also checked out my thermal detonator and it looks like the greeblies on the left are upside down?

An easy enough fix if so, just thought I'd throw it out there first, that's why I have this thread, after all!

Felt like I made a good dent of progress today. Still waiting on the proper sized elastic and to get to a sewing machine, but I started with padding inside the helmet.

Fits pretty good and I don't know if I'll even need fans because the bottom is so open. May need a few troops to decide.

I moved on to working on the greeblie. Seems to be some dispute as to whether both sides were different but since my goal is lancer status and the CRL says the dots go forward on each bicep, I shaved them down and built some for the other side.

I hope this is sufficient. Any input? Here they are after a fresh coat of paint. I haven't reattached the one I worked on yet, pending input.

I bought and used all the velcro they had at Joann Fabric to start getting the rest of the pieces ready for when my elastic comes in. I'll need quite a bit more and have ordered it.

Lastly, I started working on the belt and am using pandatrooper's method.

Felt like I really made a good dent today given that I'm still missing supplies but they are on their way, thank you eBay!

Any comments, corrections, or anything at all are certainly welcome! I'm about stuck for now until my supplies come in or I hit a sewing machine.

The ones armor has two different sized elastic, with the smaller being held with rivets. It's looking good, if your going for lancer status, Then follow to the word what they want. Keep up the good work.

Not much I can do today but took the advice and started shoring up the knees for the eventual rivets:

Now I'm really running low on extra TK plastic!

Anyway, the only other thing I could do today was try to tape the chest/back together to see how it fits (ignore my ugly mug, it will be covered while trooping! ). I'll be in trouble if my head gets any bigger! I may need to invest in a heat gun to get it just right but here it is without any cuts or adjustment. Any input would be helpful, but I'm pretty sure the back needs to come down a little at the back shoulder. And yes, that's a Boba Fett Christmas sweatshirt! Lol

you will have a little bit of room for adjustment when  put the white fabric/webbing between the front and back armor.

Made some exciting progress today. I'm still waiting to receive the 1 3/8" elastic that I need for the knee, shoulder, and bicep but I was able to do quite a bit of sewing. This thing is starting to look like a scout. I even finished the forearms! After the helmet, this is only the second part of the armor that is done! Lol

I think my chest/back may be done as well so I put together what I could, but I still need the elastic for the shoulder to arm attachment. Still, I put it all on for a test run.

The elastic on the side seems to keep the front and back at a much better place than my test run. This is only 1 1/2" elastic and I think I need 2" for lancer spec, but that requires adding 1/2" to the armor holes and I was just not prepared to do that yet, so I'll seek basic approval first. It's a moderately easy fix I can do at a later date.

I may investigate for a stronger Velcro on the shoulders as what I used works but is pretty thin. Maybe I could sew it to something to make it slightly more rigid.

In doing this, I also tried on the flight suit again and was a lot more happy with the fit. Maybe I lost a few pounds. Lol. At any rate, I'm going to revisit it to see if I can make it work.

Next, I'll be working on the belt and drop boxes but can't do too much until my bund gets here.
Title: Re: Greedo10360's TB Build
Post by: CadBane3 on December 14, 2016, 05:04:52 PM
And because it's snowing out, I did the cloth shoulder pieces.

And then got my belt started.

Going to keep the belt half finished until I get my bund so that I can dial in the sizing around the waist and the length of the drop boxes. Also, in trying it on, I'm going to have to get creative in getting my TD to attach. There's a lot of good build threads on here that use magnets, and that is probably the solution.

Anyway, any comments or critique are welcome!

Started seeing if there was a way I could make the racing suit work as my jump suit. I think I can, so I started out by trying to come up with a template for the riding patches. I've received a lot of help in this regard, so thank you all. I cut up an old pair of shorts to make my own template. Thankfully, they were reversible, so one cut gave me two templates.

And then pinned it to the suit.

Feeling confident in my ability to put on the suit without getting stuck by a needle, I put it on and took several crotch selfies. First time for everything!  :D

So, any input on their shape and how they would look? Do they ride high enough above the knee and come far enough to the front of my thighs? I want to really dial this in before I cut my suede.

As always any input is appreciated!

thigh patches come in far enough, and if they "finish above the knee armor" then you are good to go

Happy new year everybody! I've got some exciting updates but first I want to start out with a rave about my new boots and bund from Chrisx909x. Excellent product and worth every penny.

Here are the boots:

And here is a dry run with the bund. Still need my flak jacket so I'll need some Velcro to keep it up, but I was just excited to try all the parts on:

Now, on to my progress today. I finally manned up and cut my suede. I want to go lancer, so this was real suede, so I was hesitant to mess it up. Measure twice...

Still trying to use the racing suit, so I pinned them in place. I'm pretty happy with them:

And the butt flap is also ready to be put in its place:

After some help from Retrofire, I swapped the elastic I had holding the sides of my chest/back with white cotton webbing (again for the eventual lancer submission). I sewed on elastic at the very ends so it will have a little movement.

Then I nearly finished the sewing of my belt, drop boxes, knee elastic, and the over shoulder cotton webbing.

The drop boxes originally had 1 inch nylon webbing so I swapped that out for 1.5 inch cotton webbing after consulting with Retrofire (again, thanks for the help).

Anyway, I'm real happy with my progress. Seems I need to get the flight suit sewing done, make the flak jacket, get new 1.5 inch buckles for my drop box webbing (on order), finish the belt (and rivets), rivet the knees, and then get the 35mm black elastic for my shoulders and biceps and I should be nearly ready to put it all together for fitting feedback. That's really not too much stuff!

As always, comments and critique are welcomed.

Not sure if you have sewed the patches on, but some scouts use fusable interface to hold the patchesbin place when sewing. I thought the elastic on the biceps was 1.5 inches, 35mm might be too small. When stretched, the elastic looks smaller in pictures. Just a heads up.

Looking great!  You probably already have, but just in case, remember to seal the edges of the strap fabric so they don't come unraveled.

Thanks for the input. Good stuff! Got some work done on the knees today and believe they are lancer ready. I initially used a washer that was a little too large and popped right off, so I used the some of my last strip of TK abs to build new washers so I could add the 1/2 inch top elastic.

One more piece now finished!

Quick question though, as I don't have a ton of experience with rivets. In putting two of the four rivets in, the metal ball that pulls in popped out. The rivet's metal was bent and they are working for now, but I assume these are weaker than if the rivet worked properly. Anybody have any input on this? Leave them until they fail or drill them out and try again? Any idea what caused this?

Here is a pic of what I'm talking about:

Thank you!

Got some additional, exciting, progress done today and the list of what to finish is down to 2 items!

I sewed my pouches to my bund and attached velcro to the back.

Being a bit barrel chested, this was essential. I also sewed a line of Velcro to the flak jacket. This flak jacket is from Max's Sci Fi and it is really nice. I love it. I may need to shorten the sleeves, but we'll see once I put everything on.

I finished the 1 3/8" elastic for my biceps.

I also did a small strip of Velcro on the front of my flight suit. This will keep my cod up. Note, the flight suit is also from Max's and I love it! Once I finish my other one, I'll have a warmer back up for colder outdoor troops.

I added some elastic stirrups to the bottom of my pant legs to keep the legs from bunching.

I added the elastic around the shoulder bells.

And lastly, I redid the cotton webbing on the sides of my armor. The ones I had would work, but these are a little nicer.

So, that's it for now. The last two things are to paint one part of my tank greeblies white and add the two rivets to my belt and I am ready for basic submittal. I'll get that done and post up some pics for feedback.

I couldn't wait until tomorrow, so I added the rivets to my belt.

I then painted my greeblies and all that was left to do was try it on...

And here we go! Initial attempt to put it all on. Please let me know what you all think and if I'm ready for basic submission.

Any feedback is appreciated and also let me know if you need better photos as these are a bit dark and were taken by a child.  :D

To address the feedback I've received, I have lowered the pouches by one inch, adjusted some armor fit locations, and then took some better photos to make things easier on the GML. Here's round two!

I think I will need to do some Velcro to the underside of the hard armor and then to the flight suit to help keep it all in place.

Now to scrape off that pesky white from my knee rivets!

Starting to think about lancer submission and don't think I need to change much, but I do need clips for my TD. One issue is that my TD seems to have a smaller "wire wrapped" area than some of the other armor sets. I can add the clips, but there isn't much room. Any opinions out there as to whether this would work?
