Can I still sign up? or do I have to be an official member?
-Daverian
-
Definately! Technically, this isn't full 'canon' so you're very welcome. I'd encourage you to get your photos in asap so you can join other troopings. 8) We'd still like to present a 'pro' appearance because we're in the public eye - But one doesn't need to be "certified" Certifiable, maybe.... 8)
What is your outfit so I can add you to the roster??
Barry

He's a "whitie/cleanie/one in a million" trooper  He's as close to "official" as you can be without being. I will vouch for him, even though he is a CLEANIE.
-
Done. Love those 'whities'!
BA
-
:D.... Well Barry ..since you said Rebels Welcome.. Karyn and I will come join you... She said you need a Princess Leia. Of course a Jedi to Escort her... Put us down.... Rebel or not here we come.. LOL.. Peace, Allan
-
Great, you're on. :)

Thanks for the voucher!! I am excited about the opportunity!!! :D

Gotcha.....This will be a little more subdued than the 'Califormia Death March'...
-
-
 NICE!! but it won't be subdued by much.... you're having a "push-ups in armor" contest in the front lobby!! :P
I can't make this one... visitation weekend.
-
Hmm.....to see how much money we could raise!...... :)
We'll miss ya....
Ba

Gotcha both. Great!
BA

In case everyone wonders why their favorite TIE PILOT doesn't do the Doernbecher events, especially this one..... well, let's just say bad memories and the time of year keep me away. Think of me as being with you in spirit....
-
We'll miss ya man
-
I plan on making this one and I'll bring TIE #2.
-
Hey Bill,
It's OK bro', stuff like that can be pretty deeply woven into our "being", and we all have to cope in our own ways... sorry to hear you have unfortunate experiences in that catagory. It's hard on me seeing sick kids like that and all I'm going to say is, it's a good thing I have a bucket on my head so they (and all of YOU) don't see me crying at times. The DCH troops we do are bittersweet for me as well, because children shouldn't have to endure or put up with being ill... they should just have to simply be KIDS and enjoy life at that age.
-
Not to worry, Bill. Maybe you could join us at a later time. :)
Absolutely true....No one deserves to be very ill or go through operations that are serious. We don't have all the answers......
BUT, while we're still on earth, this is one thing we 'can' do for those that do go through them. No, it's not easy seeing them - What makes it worth it for me is how they perceptively change when we come into their room...or drag their IV drip stands into the halls trying to find us......Wow.
Barry
If anyone has trouble pulling up the map, let me know. 8)

Nick could probably shed more light on this story..as I was just overhearing the conversation...
Last day of OMSI I was working the crowd in line to come into the exhibit and Nick was spotting, and a little girl and her mother came through and got some pictures taken with me. The mom was telling Nick about the little girl. It was difficult to hear thru the bucket, but from what I gathered she was not doing well at DCH, she had a tracheatomy (sp?) and they tried to get her spirits up...She was terrified of Santa, but here came Darth Vader and some Stormtroopers, and she lit up!!!!! go figure!!. ...Anyway she was thrilled to get some more pictures...I guess it was kind of a "closure" for them as she was recovered...I was sure glad to be a little part of that!! :D
-Daverian
-
Yes, very true what BOTH of you just said...
That uplifting they get is the "sweet" part of trooping for sick kiddos... the "bitter" part is seeing them having to go through it in the first palce, but the sweet far outweighs the bitter, that's why I troop it when I can!! :D

Be glad too Dave,
what happened was the little girl had suffered a very harsh infancy, when she was ONE year old they had her on a tracheatomy and feared that she would not be abel to walk, talk nor have the mental capacities to lead a healthy active life.Well I'm proud to say she proved those doctors wrong!^^She absolutely loved Dave and was very active walking and running and chatting like the little kid she was!^^.To go through something like that or what all these children have to go through makes them real troopers in my opinon, and this is the reason I want to join the 501st...to bring a smile to these little ones faces whenever and where ever I can.
-
SHOOT!! This story reminds me of something that happened that last weekend at OMSI, and was a TOTAL first for me. I was just standing there in the hallway in my Sandtrooper armor, and all of a sudden I sensed someone was touching me, I don't mean just a quick "touch the plastic", either. I look down and this little kid was running his palms and fingertips all over my armor, and I realized he was BLIND, and was "looking" at my armor!! His dad was standing about 4' away and was describing what he was "looking" at. I asked the kiddo if I could take his hand and show him the rest of my armor, of course he said, yes!! I guided his fingers over the details of my bucket, the chest and ab-plates, the ammo pouches, my BFG, gloves, etc, while explaining what it was he was "seeing" and what it did... it was an excellent experience (for all of us), and his dad was pretty surprised (and thankful) that I was able to adapt to his son's needs and help make the SW experience REAL for him! That was a great day! :D
-
Excellent, Nick and, wow, Tony.
Have an idea - Putting together a type of record...Something to record these experiences of pure human interest. These two stories cross a boundry that is hard to describe - means something. Children who are blind - children who have overcome dibilitating medical circumstances.......
I have no idea what it would look like, but my guess is, it could prove to be very important some day as we look back on them - our time in the 501st. What our love for this 'thing' has done for children and adults alike.
Just thoughts but this record could be another side of the group. Different than the cool pictures we do, etc.
Tony, I'm glad you remembered that. Thanks for the explanation, Nick. I've got a couple also from previous DCH visits.
Also, whatever happened to the 'publicity' notebook some had started to put together?
BA
-
Yeah, I was there when the blind boy was touching the sandtroopers armor! In line to go into OMSI, right?
Here is one of my "friends" on myspace:

He is doing a project called "Heart of an Empire"....we should do something similar!!

Doernbecher is always a hard thing for me, regardless of what time of year it is. Some of you know, but I will explain it for everybody. Doernbecher is where my brother died of Leukemia. I almost four when he died, not very old by some people's standards, but I do remember him. His birthday is monday. He died Feb. 22, 1979, a month to the day after his 7th birthday.
Because Doernbecher is the core of CCG's events is the reason why I was so hesitant on joining in the first place. And even though it has been 28 years, everytime I go to his grave it is as if it was only yesterday. I simply can't handle seeing sicks kids. Especially up at that place and especially around this time of year. Like I said, it is filled with bad memories for me.
So now you understand why I never pipe up to volunteer to do the Doernbecher gigs - when we all know just how much of a costume geek I am (48 hours of Bill, anyone???). I guess that is all I have to say. Talk to you guys later.\
- Bill
(the best damned TIE PILOT period!) :D
-
Bill, thanks for letting us know about this part of your life. I'm sorry that happened. Sounds like you've got good feelings about your brother.....
To be sure, attendance at a DCH event is not required of members. Some folks go, some don't. Nobody is keeping score. This applies to anyone else who's life has been affected by DCH. Noone will ask about personal happenings or 'reasons' either way.
Again, thanks for sharing a part of your life, Bill.
It's always a pleasure trooping with you, and they'll be many more opportunities this year!
Barry
-
We love you, Bill!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Awwww, shucks! :)
I love me too! Especially when it is the 48 hours of ME!!!! hehe
Barry: Thanks for the kind words. And yes, he was an amazing brother. I miss him everyday, but at least I am thankful that he is not suffering. I can actually remember when he was sick and how he looked, and acted. It wasn't a pleasant experience.
To say that I hate DCH is to say that I hate the pain that is associated with the memories of that place. And while I catch myself blaming them for not being able to save my brother, I do have to admit that they did all they could with what they had. It was 1979, the average survival rate of a child with Leukemia wasn't as high as it is now. We've come a long way with medical breakthroughs. Of course I wish they were available back then, but it is what it is. Like I said, I have to try real hard not to have ill feelings toward DCH. Old pain that I can't seem to let go of, I suppose.... seeing a sick kid up there is like seeing my brother in that hospital room so long ago. Last year I was at Shriner's on the anniversary of when he died. It took all I had to not lose it up there. There was a kid that looked just like my brother (they were bald like I had remembered him from when he was there at DCH), I had to leave the room.
Maybe someday I will be able to go up there and not have it bother me. Who knows? All I know is that my brother is the sole reason I troop. Star Wars was the first and last movie we ever saw together before he died. It is that one tangible connection that I have that keeps his spirit alive with me. Most people don't relate or can't understand, but then again they weren't on that porch in late February of 1979 saying goodbye to him, either.
Anyway, thanks for the understanding. It is always a pleasure to troop with you folks, too!
-
It's always a pleasure to troop with you Bill!!
-
Don't worry Bill I'll give kids twice the love form me and you! :D
-
- Bill
(the best damned TIE PILOT period!) :D
Huge salute to you, and a second on the notion, sir!
-
If you guys need another spotter I would love to help out. My Mauls not quite ready yet, but I would like to meet a few more troopers.
-
If roster is still open I'm going to try and make it down there for this one. Sign me up as TB.
-
I just received a large box of beanie babies in the mail today from Rob Johnson (in Seaside, OR) to hand out to kids during this troop! ALthough I won't be able to troop this one, I'll bring them to the garrison meeting on the 10th so whoever is going can take them with them.
THANK YOU ROB!! :D
-
no prob guys :mrgreen:me and the wife thought those kids need them way more than we do!!
-
Thanks Rob. I'll check with DCH to see if they have any rules on handouts. I know that Lucasfilms sent them items, so I'm guessing it'll be fine. I know they appreciate us asking. We do need to be 'professional' about our business/appearances there - Wouldn't want to do anything against their rules. Sorry if it appears a little formal, but I'd rather be safe than sorry with those children. 8)
Barry
-
No prob barry!!Thank you!!!if you can't use them there i am sure there will be a time and palce.

Rob if we can't use them maybe Nick can.
-
Ok, but NO. Nick already has too many toys!
Don't wave 'em off yet. My guess is they'll be ok......But, yeah. We can always use to throw out to the masses...
BA
-
Just a reminder that this is not canon. Children are welcome as long as a parent/adult are with them. No weaponry except for sabers. We can't have any illnessess. These kids just like to have us there. I'm waiting to hear if handing out beanie babies would be ok.
Thanks all.

Tony, DCH said it's great to bring them, as long as they're new, etc. Don't have to be wrapped, but they obviously have to be careful about what is handed to the patients. The kids'll love 'em! Thanks Rob!!! :)
BA
-
*whispers* Rob(irob972) can see this section, Barry. So he will see the thanks.
-
Ahh, what'r ya talkin about, Rob?......Umm, my post is thanking Rob.....! 8)
-
....I was just thinking ....If this is a stupid question just tell me, since this will be my first visit and I am new to this.......what about the kids who may be in surgery or sedated and miss the visit but really love Star Wars and would have loved to have seen us? Do we do a follow up visit for them? :?:
-
Good question. The patients come and go. Some stay longer than others. Our visits are spaced far enough apart that we never hit the same children twice. They're there for a while - days, weeks, maybe a couple of months but there isn't ever the same grouping twice for us....We are allowed to visit whoever is on those two floors each time we go..There are several rooms we don't visit due to a quarantine for germs, they're asleep or too scared.....Kinda the way it is..... 8) We just go and cheer up whom ever we can.....
Thanks for asking.
Barry
-
Thank you guys, i hope they do love them :mrgreen:I am just sorry to be missing out on this run for the kids!!

Thanks Barry! I know this is one of the aspects of the 501st I am just going to love! Filling kids with the wonder that they need to get healthy! Lifting their minds off of their pain and being so scared because of what they are going through into the wonderful world of imagination!! I can hardly wait!! .....and any message of hope delivered while they are feeling that ....even if its just "get better"!! AWESOME!! The power to affect a life for good!! I am all about that opportunity!! :D  (Thank you Mr Lucas!!)

Could we HAVE a better attitude from a new person? I think NOT! Glad you are here Dave!! :!: :D
-
Dave, yeah, it is a great feeling. We adults should consider ourselves 'lucky' to be in good health to be able to visit DCH and bring some joy into their lives. Bells don't ring, or cameras don't flash (near as much, anyway) like other venues, but seeing those kids light up - Priceless. 8)
Glad to have you join in...

I should be able to make it, or do I need to be a full-fledged member?

[Next time I'll type real s................l....................o....................w]
-
LOL... well I only pointed that one out because I wasn't too sure what you meant... it COULD go either way! Annnnnnndddd.......... it's my little way of thanking you for sending me that eBay link for that "particular item" we were talking about... now I'm watching a few different ones... my wife is going to KILL me.
-
I know, I know, I shouldn't have......but..... :o :o
-
Well, looks like work is going to keep me out of town this weekend. Maybe next time.

What time do we meet and where?

The info is usually in the first post for these types of threads, here it is to help you out! :D

Thanks Tony. The map may be a bit tough to navigate if you're not familar with the hill. Print out the map & try that. If you need to call, my cell is 503-516-1999. Others wil have them with them, also. If you get 'stuck' up there, more than once I've stopped and asked someone walking around.
Any others?
Barry
-
sounds great.. Do we meet and then dress up at 10:30.. or get there at 10:15 for dressing up.. Either way ..Karyn and I are healthy and ready to go. I saw the map...I just wanted to know what Exit from I-5 north to go to Hospital. Thanks, Allan
-
Sheesh, I don't know! Anyone else help out with the exit?
Show up at the parking lot, we roll crates in then change in a 'changing' area.
Looking forward to your participation!
Barry
-
I-5 North, take the Terwilliger Blvd. exit go left at the light and follow the signs with the Big Blue "H" on them!! That will get you in the area.
-
If I get lost...which I often do ....how long do you wait for everyone to arrive before going in?
-
If you get lost around there, give any one of us a call. My # is a few posts earlier (or the first). Just let us know and we'll guide you up. 8)
-
Sorry my comm link is out -- no cell phone -- I am assuming also no blasters?.... any chance of rendezvousing with somebody?
-
Correct, no blasters. Lightsabers are ok. It's all in previous posts.
Is anyone coming that way to make a hook up here??
See you all there tomorrow between 10:30 and 11:00. 8)
Barry
-
Correct, no blasters. Lightsabers are ok. It's all in previous posts.
:shock:OK, last time blasters were fine, but they had to stay holstered.
-
That's right. I assume if we bring 'em that'll be the case also.....I just remember the first time I had asked, she asked for no weapons. BUT, we HAVE brought them, kept them holstered and nothing was mentioned.
Barry
-
Hey guys sorry to say I must bail out. I wish you guys the best of luck and bring smiles to the kids faces. Hope to see all of you soon in the near future
Randy
-
Hi Randy, we missed you there.
Thanks to all who participated. We got to visit a few more rooms than usual, DCH was happy and children were all over the place.
Pics will be posted as soon as I can find my cord.... :? :? :?
How was lunch?
Barry
-
Yah sorry for not making it down. Had some stuff planned up here but I'm hoping to make it down there for an event before Starlight. Its always nice to hang out with you guys.
-
Could someone create a gallery for today's shots?
Thanks...
BA

Done.

Thanks, Scot.

My grandson received a new heart at Stanford on Sept 1. He was in Doernbecher's Hosp this week having a biopsy and receiving meds to alleviate rejectioning. Your visit today was so awesome! I was the old guy with the phone camera and my grandson is Noah, the little 5 year old who loves Darth so much. You posed with him, you gently touched him; all of you meant so much to him. Thank you. Thank you.
And by the way, Leia is much more beautiful than that impostor who played you in the movies! You rock, L!! Thanks again.
All of you, if you knew how much good you are doing, you would likely blush. But keep it up.
Sincerely
Ron Sourdill
-
I would like to thank everybody for the opportunity to visit Doernbechers yesterday with you! It was my first time there. I have many stories to tell, but the one that I have to share is THE POWER OF LEIA!!! .....Karyn (Leia) and Allen (Obi) came and while winding through the rooms, I entered more than one where the child (fan of SW) was a little maybe overwhelmed or scared or unsure about me (TK)....when in walks LEIA!!! WOW!! I saw a girl's entire face change! I'm never going to forget that! Every comforting word out of Karyn's mouth you could see sink in with awe! I saw the same with Darth and Obi..the "Shock and Awe hanging on to every word",...but there is something about a benevolent character in white that stands for good and Karyn did so well!! BRAVO!! It almost makes me want to don jedi robes, well....almost
I hope I can get my wife involved! She at one point expressed interest......doubt she will though, Sidenote: Eric's voice through that hyperdyne!!! WOW!! awesome!!
Thanks again guys for all you do!! It is an honor to be associated with a group as inspiring as this one!!
-Daverian
-
Wow!! What more can I say, but to add my thanks to all that was there yesterday, it was great!! I would like to address the comments by Mr. Ron Sourdill, thank you, thank you, I remember your grandson and poor you having to almost lay on the floor to get that snap shot of me(Vader). I would have kneeled down to help get a better shot, but I don't think I would have got back up!! I enjoyed the chance to be Vader yesterday, thank you Barry for that chance!!!
It was nice seeing everyone again and nice to meet some new people. Congratulations to David H.(Daverian) and Ben B. on your costumes and joining the group! Nick, your costume is coming along great!
I must not be too bad of a "father", since "Leia" turned out OK!! Good job Leia, thanks for talking, since I was abit hesistant to ruin the Vader image with my nasally voice!! LOL :D
One last thing...What about having some type of "business cards" with our garrison info/website address,, would be great to hand out to parents that might not have had the best camera when we show up unexpected!!
Thanks
-
I would like to thank everyone who went to DCH this time around! It is always hard to see kids in such a terrible situation but the reaction that they have to us makes it ok somehow. Their brave moments of coming to us and smiling and having a picture is worth the trepidation I have before a DCH run. We really do make a difference to them, but I believe their impact on us is equally monumental. Thanks to all who went. Know that you made a difference!!!
-
One last thing...What about having some type of "business cards" with our garrison info/website address,, would be great to hand out to parents that might not have had the best camera when we show up unexpected!!
We have had some in the past and every body had a few to hand out, but I don't believe any are left. Maybe its time for a 2nd run. I would be willing to pitch in cash if someone else provides the skills. I agree that we should have a ton of them for our spotters to hand out.
-
I would love to be involved in the design if possible.... :D
-
I agree, but how about we place content on the back of the card with the URL's for the CCG photo gallery, forum, and parent 501st organization or any other relevant location.
I was asked repeatedly yesterday while spotting for the troops how to find the photo's that were taken during the troop.
If we can come to a design I will print up 1,500 through my work (3 part color). We can even have a mylar faced card material (shiny metallic like surface), let's come up with something with a great "WOW" factor, after all - when citizens see CCG in costume the first thing they say is "WOW" so let's give them something of the same caliber for PR.
Phil
-
Sounds great Phil...That was the kind of info I was talking about, If it had our website address the rest is pretty straight forward once they are inside, just directing them to the "Gallery".
By the way, thanks for your help yesterday as well! and I like your "Vader Rocks"!!!
Michael
ps...you know I was thinking  a cool watermark picture of vader on the cards would look cool!!!
-
We've got cards made up. A great closeup shot looking down a line of ST''s and seeing part of vader at the end - Taken from last year's downtown photo shoot. Color, I believe. It's got all of that info. on it. But, I think we had a few out on the table at OMSI.
Anyone know where they are? They should be kept in a central location - but able to be given to whomever is going to the next event.
[However, I could be wrong about this whole thing and I'll get shot down like the Red Baron fightin' Snoopy :?]
-
Barry, those sound cool - I thought they were all handed out at OMSI :(. I definitely know we ran out of a couple of the really nice looking flyers when I was working the table and spotting.
However, if we can't find the ones you're talking about hopefully it would be possible to coordinate who has the original artwork - where were they printed? We'd still be more than happy to have them reprinted gratis. :D :D
Phil
-
Wow, that's a nice offer. Try Ara, Tony or Scot.
If those are out, maybe they'll be up for new ones, dont' know. 8)
-
I don't have that particular file, but will look into creating a centralized file archive that all of us could have access to.
-
Sounds good. Do you forsee any glitches that may occur if the file is available for someone to use...Like, if Phil wants to print some cards..

:D We would like to Thank CCG for the opprotunity to take part in this DBH. Being our first outing after the business of OMSI. We Were so touched by Everyone involved. The kids in Hospital and the reaction to the group was awesome. Thanks you inviting us to Help. We will not forget. You all are so kind. Thank you DBH and CCG. Allan I was so honored to be able to go there and visit the children and only wish i could have done more, they are so great and precious to all of our lives. Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to be there with them and thank you for your kind words i really appreciate the feedback...i only hope that we can go back again. You might say that the children were touched by us but at the same time we were also touched by them and the strength they showed us and for the strength their families showed it was truly a wonderful experience for us. So thank you to all that were involved! Karyn (Princess Leia)

Glad to have you and Karyn with us! You add a broader range of characters for kids or whoever we're with. Your professionalism and sense of fun are great! 8)

Phil
Hey Phil,
Ara had an excellent CCG business card, but I ran out of what I had, and I can't find the image anywhere...
Based on my recolection of that card, here's something I threw together for a business card:
The front:

Alternative Front:

That's all I have time for tonight.... more designs to come.
-
That's it. Anything on the back, Tony?
-
Heya Barry,
Yes, I'm going to make a back design as well... tonight after work! I'm thinking a large transparent Imperial Cog as the background, then some CCG and Legion info over the top of that. :D
Phil, I would like to chip in for an additional 1500 so we can have 3,000 of these cards for the garrison! Thanks!
-
I still have those!

Sounds good. Do you forsee any glitches that may occur if the file is available for someone to use...Like, if Phil wants to print some cards..
Barry
We're getting off topic, but I would think that would be fine for that particular file, but we may not want other files easily available to the general public, like say, our original artwork for swag.
-
IMHO None of CCG artwork should be made available to the "general public" as it could be misused (either intentionally or not) - it should at least be centrally archived and administered by say PR.
As for me - since I am not a member of CCG, but a member of the "general public" - I will provide you with a secure FTP site to upload the files for set-up and print in this endeavor.

Thanks Scot. Tony, are you workin' too hard again? 8)
No. not the general public Phil, but your progeny are almost CCG (or are they now?) and you're headed there, so we'll let ya help with the cards.
DCH has been completed, so 'off topic' is ok, yeah? 8)
Again, thanks to all who attended Doernbecher's. You made it a fantastic time for the children. In my book, that's what it's all about. :)

Pics are in the gallery!

Thank you, Ron for the nice words. It is a privilage for us to visit Doernbecher's. And, your grandson! Tell him "Hi" from the "star wars people."
Our hope is he continues positive progress on his stay there.

I'm starting a new thred for the business cards... Phil we can't put them in the CCG private section becasue you won't be able to view them (I think).
-
Tony,
It's okay - put them in the private section as Nick2 (Sithman) does have access and he can download them for me.
Thanks
Phil
-
I figure we should give the CCG members a chance to vote on them so I made a poll that will run until the end of this month.. Go check the new thread!!

I understand and agree with the Dornbechers hospital pics being moved to the private section to protect patient privacy. I also think we need to let the patients, parents and families know however of an email addy they can use to obtain log-in permission to view the pics for now. With the pics gone from the open gallery, I'd hate to have friends and families be disappointed when they no longer can find the pics and there have been over 1,100 hits to this thread I don't know if that's just general interest or people looking for the pics, but that's pretty dang good number of hits either way.
I will run 1,000 additional business cards with log-in details for future hospital visit hand-out (these will be specialized for just such events). Going to need another design! :D
And to keep the TK's, TB's, etc. happy, maybe a different front panel with "cleanies" (since it's for hospital visits) :P
Thanks,
Phil

Very true, Phil.
Barry is working with DCH to verify that everyone has had the proper authorizations signed.
In the meantime, a 'dummy' gallery with a note on it has been created to address the issue of patients and families wishing to view their photos. 8)
-
Yep, working on it. Thanks, Scot. Despite this minimal 'setback', we'll get it straightened out for future useage.
[Later ] Just heard from DCH and they're working on getting permission for 'most' of the children. Some have been discharged. She will get back to me tomorrow (Thursday)

I got some really fun shots with my black and white medium-format film camera, and I just got them back from processing. Here is one:

Someone even asked to use it on their band poster in New York. Thanks guys, for the great photo op. Such a great visit. :D

Hi guys, its the 28th - I assume you folks voted on which cards you want printed for the CCG?
As soon as you've decided I will open up the FTP site to upload the layouts so we can print them.
Thanks,
Phil

Here's what they voted on Phil. Could you just copy and paste these to where ever you need to instead of the FTP thing? Thanks for your efforts! :D
