I am doing this event again. When Nick, Kevin and I did this last year we were a huge hit. Needless to say, LTN wants us back and have asked that we be some sort of entertainment for the crowd, you know photo ops with the kids who will be there.
Anyone who wants to participate, let me know. Anyone who wants to contribute any funds for the cause, you can go here:
http://pages.lightthenight.org/or/PortlndL09/TavrikGannon
To join the team, go here:
http://pages.lightthenight.org/or/PortlndL09/CloudCityGarrison
No pressure. If nobody wants to participate, no worries. This is more personal to me since it is what my brother died of.
The event, itself, it on October 9, 2009 at my work (World Trade Center, Portland). Walk registration opens at 6pm, with the Walk, itself, starting at 7:30pm. Those who are interested in participating in costuming for this event are asked to be there, suited up and ready to go by 5:45pm.
Anyway, I know there wasn't much interest in doing this last year, but I thought I would offer it up to the Garrison to see if any would be interested in doing this.
I'll cross post this over at Kashyyyk Base, for the RL folks who don't frequent the CCG boards, here, as well as the Oregon Fan Force.
Also, when I discussed this at the picnic, Ralph made a great suggestion about the fund. So, if you go to the page you will see that I have updated the team goal for funds raised. Seeing as how it is team Cloud City Garrison, and we are 501st, it seemed highly appropriate. Thanks for the suggestion Ralph.
If anyone has any questions, please contact me and I will get those questions answered. The most obvious one about changing room and storing our bins, I am still working on that one. I will see if I can use the locker room again this year, but I am not sure if the boss will let me do it again, or not. We will have to see about that. If I have to, I will rent a U-Haul truck for the day and we can use that to dress down in, and store our gear. As the event gets closer, I will have a better idea of what we are up to.

I am interested, as a kid I did the whole March of Dimes walk a thons for about 6 years. Might have a second car by the end of the month which would allow me to make the 3 hr trip north more often.
-
Great cause. Count me in Bill.
-
How long (distance) is the actual walk, Bill? Since that's a Friday, I will be picking up T'Igor and we might be able to do this together...
-Kyle
-
Like, less than a mile. Last year when we did it, we started at Naito & Salmon, walked North on Naito for a few blocks and came back to the Salmon Springs Fountain, where kids mobbed us for pics near the Fountain. I don't know if any of you seen the pics, or not. Those of you who have me on FaceBook, go to my photo albums, you will see some pics of last year's event, there.
Like some of the other charity walks, there was the option to take the longer walk or the shorter one. Last year, we took the shorter of the two. But even the longer walk was still under a mile and a half, I think.
It really is a short walk. We spent more time gearing up and milling around, for the check-in process, than we did on the walk and photo ops, I think.
Last year I got permission to use my locker room, since there was only three of us in costume. I don't know how feasible it will be to do that again. Since LTN wants us as part of the entertainment, I am going to see it they are willing to provide an area for us. I will definitely keep you all posted, though.
I appreciate the support with your donations of pledge money or time doing this with me. I know you could be doing other things, but I am grateful to all who participate in this thing. Who knows, you might even see a side of me that you never thought existed...
- Bill
-
I'm interested in doing this with you Bill. 8)
Solo with a little wookiee side kick maybe.
-Eric
-
Thanks Eric.... by the way, are we doing Komen again, this year?
- Bill
-
Can I sign up to spot?
-
I would appreciate that, Matt. All I ask is that those who chose to walk with me, sign up and join the team - and if you can raise money for the LLS, that would be great, too!
The team goal is only $500, with my personal of $200, just like last year. I think I was able to raise something around the neighborhood of $300 last year, so it isn't too difficult. There is a link that you can give to friends and they can paypal directly to the Light The Night Walk in the name of Cloud City Garrison's team.
Thanks everyone!
- Bill
-
I'm definitely interested in participating. This might be a fun event to attend as Batman being that it's an evening walk, but if it's only Star Wars characters I'll join as a TK.
-
Well, they did indicate that they wanted Cloud City back, since we were such a hit last year. I'd like to keep that going. I would rather the TK over Batman, just because it keeps us all uniform as Star Wars costumers.
Thanks.
Be sure to sign up to join the team!

Information on the team page has been modified. The team goal is $501.... I am 501st, after all. The change was made at the behest of Ralph (aka Jabbasdead). It made a lot of sense. And it makes a really nice geeky tie-in for the cause, since Cloud City Garrison will be representing there, in some fashion.
To any who are still considering whether they want to participate, or not, I strongly urge you to do so. It is a great cause. I need all the support that I can get. Officially, there are only two people on the team, but there are others who piped up and said that they would participate, too. I need those people to sign up on the LTN page (link provided in the first post of this thread) and I need people to contribute money, so call your friends, call your family - lets really make this a community effort for this cause.
Thanks!
- Bill
-
Alright. signed up (also updated Merc page) and my Daughter is signing up. I put the event on blast on my facebook pages and myspace pages in hopes to raising the money faster.
-
Thanks, Ralph! Much appreciated.
- Bill
-
We got a donation from the Golden Gate Garrison. Plus I am hitting my facebook page everyday with the message $1 from 501 people.
-
Awesome news, man. Thanks for all of your hard work.
- Bill
-
Tuesday, me and Natasha are going to go door to door to try to get $1 donations. Poor kid has been having asthma attacks all weekend so we put it on the backburner, she really wants to do the walk.
-
Good to hear she wants to walk. Good to hear about wanting to go door-to-door. Not so good to hear about the asthma attacks. I hope she is feeling better.
Fortunately the walk is very short.
- Bill
-
Yeah she is a real trooper, I'll bring her inhaler just in case we need it. I am going to leave for San Fracisco right after your event and try to make the Lego event on Saturday. Idiot me need to look at a calender a little more often, 5 troops in 3 days covering 1575 miles .
-
Yeah, but that is trooper of the year type of stuff, right there!
- Bill
-
No, just taking advantage of time available, car available, and poor planning on my part.

To all those who are doing this with me, I need a final count (sound off) of who is coming in costume. I was going to ask my boss for the use of my locker room, again, but I need to know how many of us are actually going to be needing it.
Note: LTN does NOT have any changing rooms available for us... let me repeat that, does NOT! I need to know, ASAP, so I can see about getting the use of the locker room.
And I see that there were a couple of folks who were interested in doing this. This event is THIS Friday. I need a solid confirmation now. If you are planning on doing this event, please join the team on the LTN page (link in the first post).
So, I need confirmation from Nick, Katie and Kevin.... let me know, guys!

Bill, is it not on the 9th anymore?
-Kyle
-
Dis this last year and had a blast!!!!
Put me down Bill as a definite
-
Bill wrong friday, people the walk is next friday the 9th and we are at $301 which only at 60%.
-
Yes, what Ralph said.... I got my fridays mixed up. Sorry about that. It is October 9th!
I have so much going on this weekend that I got everything scrambled. My bad.
We are good!
I talked to my boss. For those who are costuming, we will be using the Security locker room (not the one down in the Fit Factory, like we have done in the past). It is a bit cramped, but we should be ok. This is a more secure area, as only Security can get into the room.
I will post more details shortly!

Thanks, man!

It looks like team is currently at $351 with our goal being $501 we are getting closer. Natasha and I are finishing our Mando's and hopefully will get out in the next day or so to collect funds. I saw snowflakes or light hail just after lunch, I thought you guys said I had a few weeks until winter.
-
Awesome!
Meh, who can predict Mother Nature's motives, eh?
- Bill
-
so we are currently at 70% to our goal. After we helped raise 19K for the pigbowl, $501 should be nothing
-
You'd think..... I am confident that we will reach our goal!
- Bill
-
Hey Bill, I don't know if T'Igor will be suiting up yet, but if he is, he'll just show up in costume.
-Kyle
-
No worries, Kyle. It is a little cramps quarters down there, but it is dry and safe to store our bins.
Just like I said last year, suiting up is not required for this event - but it is nice, since we would be a sure-fire hit down there, as we were last year. I'm just happy to have the support, in any capacity.
- Bill
-
I have got some more updated info for those who are costuming this event.
As for the crowd, I think if you guys walk around and take pictures, as well as if you do any re-enactments, etc. that would be fun for people. The pictures is probably the biggest thing. If someone is taking a picture, offer to jump in the next one with them so people will see why you are there. Also remember that we will have professional team photos, so please stop by and take a team photo once you guys arrive. He should be set up by 5:30 pm. I would really like to have one of all of you for us to keep! Also there is food, so please feel free to eat dinner there.
Thank you so much - Briana
Now, before you ask, I have already put the questions out as to what time dinner is expected to be served and when they really want us suited up and ready to go. I did suggest we eat before we get into costume, but we will see how that goes.... anyone have issues eating in costume?
As soon as I get the pertinent details, I will post them as soon as possible.
- Bill
-
Excellent updates for this walk.. anymore folks .. Rally up.. This will be a fun Trooping weekend.. whew..
-
Bill, Natasha got a good checkup today from the Doctors so we will be doing the door to door this weekend. She did 2 miles today in her school walk a thon and had no problems. Knowing this kid she will get the remaining money our team needs by herself . See ya next week.
-
Glad to hear, Ralph. Thanks for all the great efort!
- Bill
-
Yay, almost Friday 8)
-Eric
-
I am definitely looking forward to it. I think we have already raised more this year than we did last year, which is great. Looks like the weather ought to be fairly decent, too.
They are wanting us to be suited up in our costumes by 5:30 (for those who are costuming). Briana did say that dinner was provided and that we were invited to eat the grub that is provided. So, I guess (again, for those who are costuming) meet down at the top of the ramp (loading dock for the three building - under the skybridge on Salmon street) at about 5:00.
I will take us all down to the locker room, then and we can change and store our gear there.
I can't wait for Friday. Thanks to all who have donated their time, money or moral support!
- Bill
-
Bill can you email me an address to park at, we will be coming up earlier than I thought. Any more troopers signing up? Troopers we are a little short of the $501 amount that we pledged can you help us out. Thanks
-
There is on-site parking, here at the World Trade Center. I just talked with the parking booth attendant. He said that if you arrive after 4:30, parking will be $4 for the night. Before, it is something like $5 an hour.
I was going to suggest the EastBank Esplanade, which is on the other side of the river (under the Hawthorne Bridge), which is a flat rate of $4.50 a day. But as it is, parking is cheaper onsite - not to mention much closer - (provided it is not full) and the only street that will be blocked off for the parade should be Naito. Since the on-site parking is on Taylor Street (and it is a one-way that runs West Bound), leaving shouldn't be an issue for you.
The address for the World Trade Center's parking lot is 56 SW Taylor Street, Portland, Oregon 97204.
Any other questions, let me know.
- Bill
-
Hey Bill, I might not suit up for this. Wearing the armor yesterday was not very pleasant because I have some very uncomfortable cracks. I'm going to try and get them all fixed tonight. If I cannot get them fixed and in working order, I might also come as a hybrid Jedi.
-Kyle
-
That's fine..... I'm ok with whatever capacity you are able to participate in.
-Bill
-
Without a doubt, T'Igor and I will be there. Even if we are spotting, but I am going to try to be in costume (and talk him into being in costume, too). :D
Who is spotting?
-Kyle
-
I would like to spot for this event
-
T'Igor will be a juvenile clone and I'll be an EVO Trooper (the clone is still under repair). What's the weapon policy?
-Kyle
-
There is none... at least none that was ever dictated. Nick and I had our blasters last year and Kevin had his lightsaber. Nobody said anything about them.
I left my sniper rifle at home and am just doing the event with my blaster pistols. But that is my own personal preference. Like I said, there was nothing dictated to me, in the respect of any sort of weapons policy.
So, bring your guns, boys! The crowds will love us!
As for spotters, any and all are welcome to come down. My ex-girlfriend, along with her current boyfriend and daughtr will be there. They spotted for us last year, too. The more, the merrier, I say!
We meet at the top of the ramp for the 3WTC loading dock (under skybridge on Salmon Street) as close to 5pm, as possible.
Briana did manage to get a changing room. So, I am thinking those who have to duck out early (Ralph and family) can use that changing room. If that is preferred. Otherwise, we all can go down to my locker room - cramped quarters, but we will make due!
- Bill

Sweet peaches, I just looked at the team page. We have $396 raised... that is just $105 short of our goal!If anyone can help make some last minute donations, so that we can reach out goal, it would eb most appreciated.
Thanks to all for their support in this cause!

Great work, guys!
- Bill

We are getting ready to leave, after repainting Natasha's helmet 3 times and still having problems with orange peel we decided we will fix it later. Going to be hitting the road soon just waiting for Natasha's medicines.

Natasha's armor plates didn't dry right so they are staying home.
-
Awesome! I can't wait to have a mini-Mando running around with me, tonight. Thanks for all of the hard work, Ralph. It is greatly appreciated!

Our door to door walk around the neighborhood netted us $13, about what the temperature felt like. I have $55 that I am picking up in California, Bill we can submit money after the event also correct?
-
Yeah, I have the master envelope to turn in everybody's privately collected money. So, no worries there!
So with the $396 collected online, plus your $68? that puts us at $464! We are almost there! I had a buddy who said he was in for a $10 donation, but i have seen it yet.
I am going to do another last-minute email blast. Thanks for all the hard work, everyone!
- Bill
-
I'll donate $27 so you meet your goal of $501. Standby...
-
I just tossed $25 your way.
-
I've got an update....
We made our goal, and then some!
Two of my co-workers just gave me $50, each. So with the $464 ($396 in online donation + Ralph's $68 in cash donations) and this $100 donation, we are at $564, $63 over our $501 goal!
I want to, personally, thank everyone who stepped up and helped with this charity. Words can't describe the gratitude that I am feeling toward those who have helped this charity out. This $564 goes out in the memory of my brother.
THANK YOU!!!!
- edit -
Adding Mosi's $25 and Marjon's $27..... new total = $616!!!!!
Thanks, again, guys!

You are there already? Crap, man, you're early!
Sit tight, I am nearby (at a friend's place by PGE park). I will be there shortly.
If you go to the corner of 1st and Salmon, you will where they are setting up for tonight's event. On the South side of Salmon (the #3 Building) there is a little walking path - they are setting up some sort of a stage at that corner. Go to that walking path and I will meet you there. I am only 15 minutes away!

Great Event! It was really ouching seeing all of those people down at the waterfront with their illuminated balloons. I was glad to be a part of it and will gladly take part in years to come!

great time, kids had fun. Is it me or is that drive home seeming to get longer as it gets colder outside .
-
is there any problems of me grabbing a few pictures to load on the Leukemia page of my website and is there an official distance that we ended up walking? Natasha and I are have a one year plan in regards to walks and donation, we have a goal of 501k in a one year period.
-
The email that I got from the LLS said:
How long is the route? There are two options: 1.8 or 3 miles. You can make the decision at 0.9 miles as to which route you would like to take. 1.8 does not have any stairs, and the 3 miles does have some stairs.
We took the 1.8 mile version for sure. :)

It was really good having more participation this year. I am very grateful to all of those who came out and supported the cause; Ralph + kids, Kyle and T'igor, Eric and Lucas, Kevin, Dave, and spotters Scott, Virginian and Shane.
I got a tree sapling this year and planted in a pot. I didn't know what they trees were for last year, or I would have got one then, too. But I put it in a pot (for now) and will plant it somewhere more suitable when I can find it.
I got more emotional this year, than last... maybe because this year it marked the 30th anniversary of losing my brother, I don't know. I walked away from everybody, went behind the escalators and balled my eyes out. He would have liked this very much.
Thanks to all of you who supported me in this cause! I can't wait to see the pics.
On a side note, we can still continue to raise funds for Light the Night until the end of the year. So, I think I will continue to donate, or solicit donations, as I can, until the end of the year. Call me crazy, but I like padding the donations numbers, especially for this particular cause!
- Bill
-
We were honored to be able to help and I will keep my links up on both my website and facebook and anything else we can do to help.
-
Thanks Bill for organizing a great event for us to participate in. I am happy to give support, and look forward to doing this event again.
