Title: Mike's ROTJ Boba Fett
Post by: CadBane3 on May 16, 2017, 01:45:05 PM
Hey all! I've been slowly (very slowly) working on a ROTJ Boba Fett and thought it was time to put a thread up to highlight some progress I have made and to invite any comments or support.

Here is the parts list:
Armor (shoulders, chest, back, knees, cod, kidney), Gauntlets - Red Krayt Dragon
Helmet - Animefan
Gloves - Bobamaker
Ammo belt, girth belt, horsehair braids, cape - Woodman
Boots - Man of War
Toe spikes - Shapeways
Shin tools - Shapeways
Flight suit, flak vest, pouches and spats - Arkady
Chest display - Fettronics
Jetpack harness - Big Dane
Jetpack - DVH
EE3 - Hyperfirm
Chest/Shoulder Decals - Lucky 31

The first purchase I made was a helmet. Because at that time, I just thought it would be fun to have a helmet in my display case... Famous last words...

This helmet was made by animefan on TDH and I am having it commission painted by another member as I want it to look amazing, and unless it's a tabletop war game miniature, I'm not sure I could paint it.

The second purchase I made, quite some time ago now, was the RKD armor set with all the greeblies and fun stuff:

This included the gauntlet set:

Then, I found some used Bobamaker gloves on the forum, so thought I had to snatch them up.

And by this point, I was already more than knee deep in, so I bought soft goods from Arkady and horsehair braids, girth belt, cape, and ammo belt from Woodman.

This flight suit is about the most comfortable piece of clothing I own now. I may order another just to wear on lazy Sunday...

Then, I got distracted...

The Cobra Commander is nearly done. Just want to get some different boots and gloves and finish gluing the Velcro to the leg belts to hold them up. That'll be a fun one to take the kids to comic con in on my off-troop days. Like I said, just got distracted...

Anyway, back to the Boba...

Today, I started getting the ammo belt finished up and gluing the Velcro to it to get it to close.

And in this one you can see the Cobra Commander leg belts drying too. Need more workspace...or less costumes...

I started figuring out where the armor needs to attach to the flak. It probably also needs a little more cleaning up and sanding.

I also need to put the cuts in the left chest piece where the electronics will show through (I have those already too...somewhere on my desk...)

Lastly, for now, I also received my boots.

These are the pre-pro from Man Of War. They are about all he is making and selling these days, so they are going to need paint and a ton of weathering. Everything needs weathering, so it's just more to add to the list of things to do. I've ordered some toe spikes for them as well and will need to attach those.

Anyway, tons to do still but felt I had made enough progress to put it out there because I am going to have a ton of questions.

Off to a great start man!

Some of the shin tools you can just buy the camera processing equipment and chop it up if you want super authentic! :D

Updated all the links. Stupid photobucket and trying to make money and stuff...

Anyway, not much in the way of new developments I did obtain a Hyperfirm EE3, which is just amazing!

Oh, yeah, I also procured a jetpack harness. Almost forgot since I haven't completed putting it together.

I've also ordered the US Divers buckle, but that hasn't shown up yet. I'm nearly at a point where the collecting needs to turn into assembling. That's the part that scares me!

I initially bought the printed one from Shapeways:

https://www.thedentedhelmet.com/forums/threads/3d-printed-boba-fett-jetpack-harness-thrusters-rocket.23382/

but that one doesn't come with the bottom cross bar, which you could easily buy from a hardware store and add, or the strapping, which you could also buy (seatbelts from an auto part store). Then, I was lucky enough to get in on a run from Big Dane:

https://www.thedentedhelmet.com/forums/threads/quality-jetpack-harness-kit.24794/

so, I have two laying around here and am interesting in using the one from Big Dane. If you are interested in the Shapeways one, send me a PM and we could figure something out.  :D

Received my bucket today. Commissioned the paint job from Fett_4_Real on The Dented Helmet and it does not disappoint. It's a work of art and will almost be a shame to wear it. But, wear it, I will. I'll need some padding and liner on the inside still.

Everything else is being painted and weathered and I believe the only items I have left to procure are the shin tools and the jet pack. Losing a bit of momentum as everything takes so long, but it's moments like this that inspire me to keep going as things get completed.

Holy Fett! What have I gotten myself into?!?! Well, the good news is that after about 6 months of waiting, my commission paint parts are back. The bad news is that I am totally overwhelmed!!!

I need to hit the Dented Helmet forum hard and start researching all the new questions that I have. Like how do you secure a rocket to a gauntlet? How do you add hinges on the gauntlets? How do you best secure the armor to the flak jacket? What about if you are too large for the cod and back piece to fit around you? What kind of hoses do I need to have come off the gauntlets and where do I attach them up my arm? How do I secure knee darts to the knees? You know, the important questions that a young boy may ask his father... if he wasn't unceremoniously beheaded right in front of me... Damn Jedi...

I also have a jetpack finally and have shipped it off along with my shin tools for some paint. Once both of those are back, probably in another 2-3 months minimum, I'll have at least acquired all the parts I need and only need to assemble and finish them for submission photos.

I'm going to shelve this all for tonight and then if work permits, take it all out tomorrow, get better pictures and start to compartmentalize what I need to do and start hitting things one thing at a time. Should be a fun ride to the finish!

Alright, well work slowed down enough today that I was finally able to go through the pieces I received and get better pictures of each and start to put together a game plan as to how I will tackle them. Some good discoveries, some bad, but lots of work to do.

First, the knees. Now these were the most recent version from RKD and are supposed to have a front plate as well as a back plate and a way to secure the knee darts to them. My commission painter seems to have misplaced the back part, so I really only have the front of the knees and will need to come up with something creative to attach the knee darts. They are aluminum so magnets are out. Possibly thinking about something with Worbla on the back portion to secure them forever. I also need to add the strapping and weather the strapping. Seems like that could all be tackled pretty easily, but I'm going to give my painter a few more days to see if he notices any knee pieces laying around his workshop as I'd sure love to have that inner support to strengthen them and fully adhere the darts.  Anyway, they are beautiful.

Next up, the shoulders. These also are quite stunning and I really like them. As far as I can tell, they only need to be secured to the flak jacket. Should be easy, but I'm a bit torn as to whether I want to use Chicago screws as Luke has advised or try using a pin and backing method that I've seen floating around TDH. The pin and backing is tempting due to the ability to just remove the piece and move it if they are in the wrong spot.

Sticking with the upper torso, here is all the ab and chest armor. See above for the discussion on securing them to the flak.

And here is the flak.

I may have put on a bit of weight since I bought it and will need to talk to current Bobas about how tight it needs to be. I have my harness and that needs to go under it, so maybe I just need to finish that up and give it a test fit. Might be close.

Here is the back and neck piece, also beautiful:

Here are a few odds and ends. The cape:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4578/37556841575_cffd5543ac_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/ZdLCxi)20171115_132649 (https://flic.kr/p/ZdLCxi) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

and the pouches and spats:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4556/26667382599_e7c63e1c0f_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/GCviLB)20171115_132437 (https://flic.kr/p/GCviLB) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Thank god those will fit no matter how big I get. Which brings me to the next problem. The cod/butt area. My painter cut them to take off too much and there is about a 2 inch gap on either side. That gap will be covered by the pouches, girth belt, etc. etc. but I need to get rid of it. I am going to have to find some ABS pieces and paint them up to match to create some shims. Damn. Two steps backwards...

Lastly, the gauntlets. These are amazing but also overwhelming.

On this one, I need to secure the missile to the gauntlet and insert the flamethrower nozzles and keep them from falling out. I also need to add hinges or some type of closure. Lots to do.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4558/37556845955_3fb0f7e8e9_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/ZdLDQP)20171115_132154 (https://flic.kr/p/ZdLDQP) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

On this one, I need to repair the hose attachment that fell off in shipping and then add the hoses that will run up my arm. Also, it will need hinges or some type of closure.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4564/37556845145_00f9fcb5e5_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/ZdLDAR)20171115_132307 (https://flic.kr/p/ZdLDAR) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

They sure are pretty though...

So, lots to do but if I tackle it one problem at a time, I'm hopeful that I can be done with these parts in time for the jetpack to get back to me. We'll see.

Knees - I had a pair of RKD knees originally and they came with a hard foam insert. Basically you'd drill a hole where the darts go and then they'd be glued to the hard foam. I have velcro on the inside of the knees that attaches to the flight suit, they helps prevent them sliding down. Lastly, Grab some 1" elastic for the backs of the knees and use snaps on the elastic and then snap plates on the insides of the knees. Makes it a bit easier to get on/off.

Nice! Seems easy enough. Since I have no foam from RKD now, I may get creative, but sounds like something I can handle!  :D

Small update today because I didn't have too much project time, but progress is progress. First, during shipment, one of the hose attachments for one of my gauntlets came off. The glue just failed.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4548/26733804369_0642fa9b5c_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/GJnJDx)20171118_154955 (https://flic.kr/p/GJnJDx) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

This has to have a hose attached to it that will run up my arm, so I assume it gets a good deal of pressure put on it, so I didn't want to just glue it back. So, I reverted to my table top miniatures background and decided to try pinning it using a drill and part of just a standard nail:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4519/26733802299_30e51982ef_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/GJnJ2R)20171118_155739 (https://flic.kr/p/GJnJ2R) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Drilled holes in each side and glued the nail in:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4523/26733802359_72d0d217ba_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/GJnJ3T)20171118_160634 (https://flic.kr/p/GJnJ3T) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

And then glued it all back together:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4528/38509655191_bd319d15a3_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/21EY3Qg)20171118_160739 (https://flic.kr/p/21EY3Qg) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Will it work? I dunno. We'll have to see once it dries and I can put some pressure on it to see if it will hold up.

Second thing I started work on was the knees. Needed to install the knee darts so I started with drilling holes. This wasn't easy and ended up with much cursing and exacto knifing but in the end, I got generally round holes that will work.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4517/26733804429_69328dcf2b_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/GJnJEz)20171118_154724 (https://flic.kr/p/GJnJEz) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Now, as Luke says, the armor is supposed to have foam that the darts glue on to, but as noted, my foam was lost in shipment to my painter and back. No worries, I have Worbla! So I laid down a layer on the knee plastic, so it would adhere to itself and built a little part that will seal it shut.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4548/38509653071_d26e4d7f49_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/21EY3cH)20171118_161314 (https://flic.kr/p/21EY3cH) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Hit it with the heat gun and shape it a bit, and it hugs the darts pretty well:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4517/26733800229_c5864c1936_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/GJnHqa)20171118_162129 (https://flic.kr/p/GJnHqa) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Repeat for the other side, but this time I slathered some e6000 in there to see if that makes a stronger bond. I'll find out if they fall out on a troop.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4566/26733798049_1107487c11_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/GJnGLz)20171118_162637 (https://flic.kr/p/GJnGLz) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

They ended up looking like this:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4528/26733797849_9b316cb2b9_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/GJnGH8)20171118_162648 (https://flic.kr/p/GJnGH8) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Now to let them dry and see how strong it holds:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4528/38509650261_1fa9e325bc_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/21EY2ng)20171118_162727 (https://flic.kr/p/21EY2ng) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

I figure even if they fall out, then I can just slather in more e6000 when I put them back in and they'll have the plastic to adhere to.

After they dry, I can add the elastic straps and a little Velcro to hold them on my knee on the suit, a little paint to the darts, and they should be done!

Took another day off work and that means I got to play around with my hobbies! Spent a little time with Boba today and am making slow progress. So, I wanted to secure the armor to the flak jacket. This flak jacket is pretty darn tight (like physically tight, not tight like the kids say) and I'm not certain that it will work as I need to fit my harness under it. May need to shop in the Boba Fat section for another...

Anyway, since I wasn't certain that it would work, I decided to forgo Chicago screws and cutting holes in the flak and I went with the jewelry pin and clutch backs. The hope is that enough of them are used so that the armor doesn't fall off and if one or two fail during a troop, the remainder will be strong enough to keep the armor attached. We shall have to see.

So, first, I marked on the armor where I wanted to secure the pins:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4516/38205927844_dc0af6f7d1_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/21d8ngS)20171207_103104 (https://flic.kr/p/21d8ngS) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Then, I sanded and roughed up the area so that the epoxy would have something to grip:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4646/38885666442_51663025f5_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/22fccSS)20171207_103656 (https://flic.kr/p/22fccSS) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Then, I did the same to the pins:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4597/38921311031_d7fd8a918b_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/22ikTLK)20171207_113144 (https://flic.kr/p/22ikTLK) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Then I got the most caustic, horrible smelling stuff I could find. Says it works on plastic and metal! Best of both worlds!

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4588/27145116589_dc2604ce92_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/HmHPrx)20171207_140335 (https://flic.kr/p/HmHPrx) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Next time, open a freaking window first. Stupid. At least it was a free high... well, $10 or something like that... Anyway, I got them all attached and I even secured the red screen for my chest electronics:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4640/38035036165_f8f3a73915_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/ZX2v8B)20171207_161741 (https://flic.kr/p/ZX2v8B) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Then I Gorilla Taped my electronics into place. Not sure if this will keep it in place over the course of multiple troops and the sweat test, but it's a first attempt, so we shall see:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4592/25049886518_cbdcf451d9_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Eazdx9)20171208_125440 (https://flic.kr/p/Eazdx9) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Looks cool to me:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4519/38035033655_c675d23711_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/ZX2uok)20171208_125452 (https://flic.kr/p/ZX2uok) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Then I secured the armor to the flak. Took three or four attempts and a few finger pricks to get it where I like it.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4635/38885661042_b63fdb02c6_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/22fcbgL)20171208_133326 (https://flic.kr/p/22fcbgL) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Obligatory bathroom selfie! I'm fabulous. I know the costume needs more pleather, but you don't know what I have on under here. Maybe those pics are for my other blog... LOL

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4540/38035030725_ed35644449_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/ZX2tvP)20171208_140409 (https://flic.kr/p/ZX2tvP) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

I think the armor is pretty well placed but am open to feedback. I need to raise up my belts but that may get sorted out when I have the cod/kidney in place.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4729/38035030925_47481afa8c_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/ZX2tzg)20171208_140456 (https://flic.kr/p/ZX2tzg) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Anyway, so I started working on the gauntlets as well, but ran into a bit of a wall with the hinges. Need extensive research to learn how that works (and a build day with the resident Boba expert). Also, I'm nearly done with the knees. They need some paint on the darts and then elastic to keep them on, plus Velcro to keep them in the right place on the suit. I need to work on getting the back armor attached to the front and need to come up with a solution for my cod/kidney armor. Plus my jetpack is needing painting, and my harness needs sewing, and... and... and.. Oh, man, at least I'm making some progress here and there.

Hello everybody! Me again! Well, I was told to smoke ribs today, so that means I have almost 6 hours of work time with minimal interruption, so I plugged away a bit on my Boba. Today, I decided to putter along on the gauntlets. This is the part that has seemed overwhelmingly difficult, but I think I have a pretty good direction now.

First, I wanted to get my rocket mounted on the gauntlet.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4545/38971654991_b8259b45d4_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/22nMVh4)20171209_142531 (https://flic.kr/p/22nMVh4) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

I was initially thinking about using the threaded rod to make a pin, and then have it go all the way through the gauntlet and use the nut to secure it from the other side.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4548/38255597194_fb71eb4ab0_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/21hvWeY)20171209_142557 (https://flic.kr/p/21hvWeY) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

So, I secured the threaded rod to the rocket by drilling holes and using the epoxy from earlier:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4581/38255594704_d7313748e2_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/21hvVv3)20171209_143327 (https://flic.kr/p/21hvVv3) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

And I started drilling the holes in the gauntlet:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4561/27194291699_d121d6f7a0_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Hr4Rug)20171209_144913 (https://flic.kr/p/Hr4Rug) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

This was where I thought about it and thought, "why would I ever need it to be removable from the bottom? Seems like just something that would loosen and eventually fall off." Also, it would probably constantly poke my arm. So, I went the easy way and just epoxied the Hutt out of it and it'll be on until the end of time, I hope.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4686/38971652071_7096ebb4bc_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/22nMUpH)20171209_145941 (https://flic.kr/p/22nMUpH) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

While that was drying, I grabbed the right gauntlet to start figuring out how it will fit. It's way too large and needed to be cut down:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4539/38255591124_e48aa18488_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/21hvUrj)20171209_153956 (https://flic.kr/p/21hvUrj) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

I ended up taking about a half inch off each side of the bottom forearm.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4600/27194285709_d3b60c3e5a_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Hr4PGZ)20171210_112753 (https://flic.kr/p/Hr4PGZ) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

The next step, was seeing how the hinges would sit. The tops of the gauntlets are fiberglass and they are nice, but the inside is quite wavy and uneven, so they needed to be sanded down so the hinges would sit flat.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4597/27194284249_ab47ba454d_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Hr4PgP)20171210_113810 (https://flic.kr/p/Hr4PgP) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

After a bit of sanding, I ended up with this:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4563/25100535648_ac33caf505_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Ef3NL1)20171210_123351 (https://flic.kr/p/Ef3NL1) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Tough to see, but it sits nearly flush with the area I sanded. The epoxy has some volume to it as well, so it didn't need to be perfect.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4578/38255586924_766ceba36d_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/21hvTbU)20171210_123412 (https://flic.kr/p/21hvTbU) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Not wanting these to fall apart, I epoxied the heck out of them! I'll go back and sand out the rough edges later.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4692/27194281679_3fd1fb6c56_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Hr4Nvv)20171210_132431 (https://flic.kr/p/Hr4Nvv) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Both sides of the right gauntlet came out pretty well. I can pull the pin out of the bottom hinge and it'll open it up about an inch, enough for me to slip my hand out. Pretty happy with how this one came out.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4692/24106795907_8257a4f43d_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/CJeCyc)20171210_152411 (https://flic.kr/p/CJeCyc) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Now, it fits much better. I was wearing a sweatshirt, but it's near in volume to my flight suit:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4593/38255580444_1594529a83_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/21hvRgb)20171210_152430 (https://flic.kr/p/21hvRgb) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

I think I'll just need to add the hoses to that one and it's done.  :D

Repeat the steps with the left gauntlet:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4542/27194274449_0e89013175_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Hr4LmR)20171210_140815 (https://flic.kr/p/Hr4LmR) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

And this is about where I'm leaving them for today. One more half hinge to mount but I want them to dry a bit and I need to figure out a way to bend the bottom forearm section so it has a better curve to it. Anybody got any ideas? I tried heating it up with my heat gun and putting gentle pressure on it but that didn't work too well. Just don't want to snap it in half. Anyone know what I can do? Thanks!

Gaunts, gaunts, gaunts! Well, this was the most intimidating part of the build in my mind, and I think I may have nearly finished them! When we left off, I had 1 3/4 done, or at least hinged. I needed to bend the remaining part so it didn't put too much stress on the hinge area or the epoxy. Did some internet research, and I think I was doing it right, just not heating it enough. I can argue that I was scared to ruin a piece as you can't exactly just pick up a replacement. Here it was before:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4536/39015270781_a1647282fa_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/22rDsJr)20171211_133126 (https://flic.kr/p/22rDsJr) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

So, very carefully, I heated it up, much longer than I had been doing. I also found a place where it could be slightly squeezed so I could get the right shape:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4731/38299420784_aa5013074d_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/21moxt7)20171211_134008 (https://flic.kr/p/21moxt7) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

What, you don't have a vice in your office in case it comes in handy? I'm sorry, bro!

And, I ended up with this:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4520/27238117199_89a1d532fb_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/HuWthk)20171211_134022 (https://flic.kr/p/HuWthk) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Then, I just needed to install the second hinge:

That left the flamethrower as the only part remaining on the left gauntlet. Can't really use pleather here, so I'll use my second favorite new material (to me at least), WORBLA!!!

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4592/27238114229_776d6b35e0_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/HuWsp8)20171211_140917 (https://flic.kr/p/HuWsp8) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

First, I was going to make a Worbla box that would hold the nozzles and be able to fit into the open space. Much careful heating and shaping went in to this part:

And, you generally have a plastic box that is pretty rigid once it cools. Something to adhere to the inner sides of the gauntlet.

Pretty happy with how they came out. Of course, once trooping, I'll come up with more ideas as to how to make them stay in place and be more comfortable, but for now, they are nearly done. Need to do the hoses that come out of the right gauntlet and get them secured to the strap that Arkady thoughtfully sewed inside my suit. I also raised my shoulder armor per the advice of Luke. I'd like to give him a quick shout out and thank you for being my resident Boba expert and fielding all sorts of questions. It is much appreciated, my friend!

More to do! More to come!

Had to burn a vacation day today or I would lose it, so I had a little time to work on my ongoing projects. First and foremost, a huge thank you to my Secret Santa from last night. I don't know who you are, but it's pretty obvious that you've read my work log and thoughtfully got me this awesome shirt! Thank you and Merry Christmas!

Now, down to business. First, my rangefinder kept having the top part fall off and the little bolts that were holding it on were not sufficient, so I got a locking nut to use. This is only an update because it took my sausage fingers the better part of 30 minutes to get the bolt on and tightened. So frustrating that I only did one locking nut. It's good enough, trust me.

Then, I secured my wookie braids to my flak. That should now be pretty close to done. Might make a pocket for the battery pack for the chest electronics.

I panted my knee darts and got ready to sew the strapping for the back of them. Going to need to drag the straps through some mud and get them good and weathered, but these are also nearly done:

And lastly, I received my replacement TK belt parts. This is significant because I ordered a few ABS plastic shims.

Cut them to size and am going to make them work on my cod/kidney problem:

Got them painted up and the next update, I should have them attached. Thinking about using epoxy for one side and Velcro for the other so that they are somewhat adjustable.

That's it for today. Have a great weekend!

Very small update today as I didn't have much time to work, but I got the back armor attached to my flak. Of course, it'll have to come off every troop, but the thought of drilling holes through both pieces was a bit overwhelming. Here is what it looks like together:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4588/27320674719_ec88160984_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/HCeAKR)20171216_152441 (https://flic.kr/p/HCeAKR) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

I need to get the cape attached and will need to just but a slightly longer bolt for that, but it looks pretty good.

Also, the paint dried on my shims for the cod/kidney. These are going to be hidden at all times when in costume by the pouches, so an absolute match wasn't as important to me (although the GML may overrule that... LOL). I epoxied the front of them and added industrial Velcro to the back so that they can slip on and off and be adjustable. I'll need to add the G-string, or whatever its called at some point.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4683/24237011787_c1eba8c31f_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/CVK2cz)20171216_153146 (https://flic.kr/p/CVK2cz) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

And, then lastly, since I had all those parts together, I thought, "why not just suit up in what I have so far?" So, here is where it currently stands:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4731/39097717631_f23bacf428_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/22yW2iR)20171216_155322 (https://flic.kr/p/22yW2iR) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Starting from the bottom, the shin tools are at my painter. I have the knees essentially done and just need to sew the Velcro on them and then I'm going to add some Velcro to the flight suit so that the knees will stay in place (this is the same as I did with my biker scout and it works well). To make it look good once the knees are on, I may need the thigh pouches to be raised up an inch or two. Not sure how I will do that but maybe it can be hemmed at the midline or something (not sure how that works with a zipper down he middle). I need to sew the strapping on to my harness and get that on, along with the US Divers buckle. I have all that and just need access to a sewing machine. Maybe this week I'll work on it a bit and get the parts pinned together. I need the longer bolt for the cape (easy fix). I have the hoses for my right gauntlet soaking in a cooler full of coffee and grounds to try to weather them. Once they are done, they need to be attached and then attached to the upper part up my arm. I want to get my chest electronics secured inside the flak somehow. Maybe a makeshift pocket or some type of Velcro attachment. Still noodling that one. And then, lastly, I need the jetpack back from my painter so that I can add the hooks and clips and that should be about it. Pretty sure I'm forgetting something, but whatevs! Damn, I look good!

Enjoy the weekend all!

More Fett is always a good thing! Now get your mind set on hiking a few miles in it for Starlight! :D

Thanks Luke! It's surprisingly comfortable so far. Not sure if that will stay true once the jet pack is added. It'll be done and submitted well before the next starlight!

Small update today as I'm hopeful that Santa will bring me a sewing machine so I can finish my strapping and jetpack harness. Finished the 7+ day coffee soak for my gauntlet hoses. Here is what they look like versus a clean hose:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4636/27473402819_e83e9971dd_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/HRJnuX)20171222_112538 (https://flic.kr/p/HRJnuX) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

I have them just placed on the gauntlet with no glue at this point as the tension seems to keep them on, for now. I also cut some slits in them so that they were a slight bit more flexible as they are very rigid:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4592/38372613165_83607d8fd6_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/21sRF1H)20171222_134426 (https://flic.kr/p/21sRF1H) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

The slits are mostly up my sleeve once they are secured to the clip:

That's about it for this costume for now. So close! Just need some finishing parts and my final pieces painted and I should be ready to submit for approval.

Got the sewing machine I needed for Christmas, so I immediately hammered out the final parts that needed completion, from a sewing standpoint.

So, I finished my jetpack harness:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4693/39340169371_735f73453d_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/22WmDLg)20171225_130139 (https://flic.kr/p/22WmDLg) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

and the straps for my knees:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4692/25471685358_0e93a4b655_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/ENR3CW)20171225_130542 (https://flic.kr/p/ENR3CW) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

I may add some Velcro to the knees of my flight suit and may need some slight alterations on the flightsuit itself, as well as holes to the back of my flak jacket for the harness straps to come through, but the costume is essentially done and ready to submit as soon as I have my jetpack and shin tools back from being painted!

Added Velcro to the flight suit to keep the knees in place.

Will need to weather the elastic on the back of the knees, but I'm essentially done with all that I can do until my jetpack and shin tools are received back.

Well, it's been some time since I've done anything on this costume and frankly, I don't even remember where I left off. The good news is that my jetpack and shin tools have finally returned from the commission painter and they were worth the wait!

I know I need to install the hooks on the jetpack to get it to attach to the harness, but no joke, it's been so long since I've thought about his costume that I have no recollection of anything I did before. I may have to read my own build log! LOL

Anyway, would be cool to finish it and get it submitted for RCCC. I'll have to dig it all out over the weekend and see how close I am. I honestly think I just have to get the jetpack connected and then suit up, but I may be surprised once I start reviewing it next to the CRL.

Added the Fett "g" string to my cod/kidney and then looked over everything and I'm actually quite close to being able to submit. Today, I spent some time adding the clips to the jetpack so that it can attach to my harness:

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1845/44436336561_76ae38efc4_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2aGFQHP)20180902_161506 (https://flic.kr/p/2aGFQHP) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Then, I sewed button holes in the back of my flak vest so that the harness straps can pass through the top and the bar of the harness, what the jetpack sits on, can pass through the bottom:

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1870/44436336641_ecf2900126_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2aGFQKc)20180902_164936 (https://flic.kr/p/2aGFQKc) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

I ended up adding a few extra holes to the bottom so that the bar can fit through a slightly smaller set of holes. Shouldn't be a problem as they are hidden under the bar.

And that brings me to the harness. The last piece of the costume that I need to dial in for submittal photos (except for some minor weathering of the G-string and the knee straps). This is a Big Dane harness that many swear by and I'm sure it'll work just great but the tri-sliders that I bought so far are a bunch of junk and I cannot get any of the strapping to stay in place. The slightest tug and it essentially falls right off. Not a good recipe when the jetpack weighs at least 10 pounds and I certainly don't want it to fall off my back and get destroyed. So, I'm not sure what I'm going to do. May need to find different sliders or something, but I'll have to come up with some solution.
