GONK
« on: February 09, 2018, 03:19:47 PM »
Who doesn't love a GONK droid??!

We are kicking around the idea of a Gonk build party and want to gauge interest. Chime in if you would be interested in attending/building your own Gonk droid.

Hmmmm, how much are we talkin about! I’d at least be in it to help and learn. 3PO has my wallet spread REAL thin.

We haven't priced out the parts yet, but I am thinking the cost will be fairly low. Of course, a person could spend a lot, depending on what/how they want to accessorize their Gonk.

Gonks are super cheap and very easy to build!

For those that have seen mine at our RCCC booth, I’ve got about $40 invested in it.   The only thing you’ll need to buy is:

- 2 plastic bins
- outdoor drainage pipe ( or drier hose)
- pvc for the leg skeleton
- wood for the feet
- paint

Greeblies are a must, but most all of that stuff is found around the house.

I’d be happy to help any way I can

Here's my guy:

Here you can see most of the greeblie add-ons.  Top is a broken furnace board I had from when I had to replace mine.  The side is a bunch of circuit boards pieced together from old VCR's, cable boxes, etc... The plastic housing is actually the top of a cricket keeper from the horrible days when my son had a bearded dragon living with us.   Anyhow... the point is , almost anything can be used for a GONK.  That's why it's such a fun project.  creative liberty at its finest

As for the feet...  I've seen people make them out of anything from foam ( Those exercise foam tiles you bought when working out seemed like an awesome idea) to wood.    I made mine out of wood.  I made them hollow so that I could fill them with sand afterwards to weigh the GONK down.  I drilled a hole in the bottom of the foot, filled the foot with sand and then plugged the hole.  Gonks can be tipsy, so this helps keep him standing in place.

As far as picking out tubs, there is no right or wrong answer.  Just go to the aisle in the store that has them and put two on top of each other.  Does it look good?  Buy them.  Doesn't quite do it for you?  Pick two different ones.   I've even seen some cool ones that use two different sized bins.

Also... While we are on the topic of bins.   You need to sand them before painting!  I would just do this with a sanding pad at pretty much any grit you want/have
You need to scuff up that protective gloss that they have to allow primer to stick to it.

Here's my bins I went with.  I don't remember the gallon size they are, but you'll find the right size when you go to the store and see them first hand.  You can also see in this pic how I attached the legs.  I used 4" PVC for the legs.  They are attached to the body by PVC Caps that are attached to the wood you can see in this pic.  The PVC goes into the feet and I added screws through the feet and into the PVC.

There's a million ways to do GONKS.  This is just how I did mine.  Have fun with it.  One of the coolest things I've seen done with a GONK is adding a sound system to play music around your house.  Todd Baker did this and it rocks!   There are some cool GONK build threads on TheRPF and Astromech too.

F**K you Photobucket!
