Title: Cloud City Garrison's IG-88
Post by: CadBane3 on June 11, 2018, 05:21:01 PM
So, I hadn't built anything in like a day, so I was itching to start another project. Have a few lined up but grabbed the one I wanted to do the most, because, goals... IG-88 intrigues me because he's a bounty hunter, has a very minimal amount of screen time, looks pretty cool, and seems like a fun project to do. To say there is not a lot of reference material on this guy would be correct, but since I'm not building a costume, and it doesn't need approval, I suppose I just need to do the best I can. At this point, I'm not certain if I'm doing the whole build, body and all, or just doing the head and stopping there.

Here's one of the best reference images I can find.

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/899/42693766762_9d9348a875_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/283GHqW)IG-88 (https://flic.kr/p/283GHqW) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Found a few more in an old book from Powell's this weekend and found a few build logs that are out there, but they seem to disagree on certain parts, so for now, I'm just going to focus on the head. I'd really like to bring this prop to the garrison, so if anybody out there has any ideas, tools, resources, or heck, even a "can do" attitude and some moxy, then your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

One general consensus that I have found is that the droid stands about 7'6" when fully assembled and in ESB, his feet aren't shown (because they didn't build him feet) and he is down a step during the bounty hunter scene. This means that if we make a whole stand up prop, body and all, I think it would need to be able to be broken down into lower legs, torso, arms, and head, so that it can be stored when not on display. But anyway, those are problems and discussions for another day.

I picked up the head from Docking Bay Outfitters. The original head was a Rolls Royce Derwent engine combustion chamber from a Glouscester Meteor, a British jet from the 40's and 50's. Thankfully, this one is a cast of it because I think weight is going to play an important part in this build.

So, here's about all the reference material I have to start with...

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1743/28869330958_9de3f991d7_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/KZ5Siu)20180611_102208 (https://flic.kr/p/KZ5Siu) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

His neck is actually the lower portion of the Derwent, so first thing is cutting it into pieces:

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1738/27873678007_4470f80db1_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Jt6Tni)20180611_103309 (https://flic.kr/p/Jt6Tni) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Now I have a neck and a head, and a very messy office. All additional Dremel work was completed in the garage. Lesson learned...

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1721/42693404892_91466ca82f_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/283ERRN)20180611_104007 (https://flic.kr/p/283ERRN) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Then, I marked out what areas needed to be holes.

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1727/42025460064_000270d3d1_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/272Dt8E)20180611_111908 (https://flic.kr/p/272Dt8E) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Side note, here is an example of why you wear a mask when using your Dremel.

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1722/27873676527_d9055bd151_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Jt6SVM)20180611_110132 (https://flic.kr/p/Jt6SVM) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

So, I cut all the holes I need, and then reviewed a second build log. I may have been a bit exuberant and cut a few too many. Well, the two build logs don't agree on which ones to cut! So, I may need to fill a few of them in the future.

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1737/28869327048_9947b79090_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/KZ5R95)20180611_150546 (https://flic.kr/p/KZ5R95) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

I paid extra for the kit I bought so that the greeblies would be included. The part I'm holding in my hand is his eyes... I think...

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1736/28869327018_b321495d84_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/KZ5R8y)20180611_160635 (https://flic.kr/p/KZ5R8y) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Upon dry fitting them and inspecting the pieces more closely, I decided that I would order replacements for the 6 UHF PL-259 connector plugs. They came out all right, but to have the sharpness that can only come with metal seems like a good call this early in the build. The rest of the pieces seem fine but I'll have to figure out how to attach the eyes to the head.

Anyway, this will be a very slow build and may only be comprised of the head. I don't know. We'll see how motivated I am one I get the head done and lit up. May just be an expensive lamp if I don't keep going!

This is awesome! Would love to see the project go all the way, but I can understand the amount astronomical work going into a complete prop.

Let's build this one together and we can have joint custody! Or, this will be the test one and then we can copy it for yours.

Cool, I always love IG for some reason. Wish I could help out with this but I’m pretty swamped with my own projects. Are you connected with other people who’ve built him?...I’d be happy to put out some feelers also.

No connections here but I have found a build log on The Dented Helmet that was pretty well done from scratch and things the guy found in the street. The other log I found was just for a head, so I'm using that one mostly right now as it's easier to read. Any feelers or connections you may have would be much appreciated!

Today I was able to bondo the extra holes I had drilled. Whoops!

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/884/42045392474_34321e2310_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/274pCkU)20180612_085716 (https://flic.kr/p/274pCkU) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

And then I looked at the parts to see what would need sanding. Lot of mold lines.

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1752/27893545417_71fb1209db_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/JuRHfR)20180612_090025 (https://flic.kr/p/JuRHfR) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

And then this one, which is the mother of all mold lines! And it has a twin sister on the other side!

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1760/42762850691_f794b55594_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/289NMFa)20180612_095032 (https://flic.kr/p/289NMFa) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Well, I sanded them for quite awhile and got them to a point where I was comfortable that anything remaining will be hidden by primer:

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/899/42045391064_17bd1b9b6e_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/274pBVA)20180612_102336 (https://flic.kr/p/274pBVA) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Then, I started priming the interior. I want to do a few coats of black and then maybe a coat of plasti-dip and then a coat of silver. I want it to get some thickness so that the interior lighting will only shine through the holes it's supposed to shine through.

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/883/42713188662_547d6ce296_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/285qfTh)20180612_125945 (https://flic.kr/p/285qfTh) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Then, I ran to the hardware store and found a few supplies that may help get me through the rest of the head build. Trying to brain storm a way to have the light remain in place inside the head. I'm thinking about suspending it some how. Got a few ideas.

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/880/40951829730_5413cc0d99_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/25oLQeQ)20180612_145527 (https://flic.kr/p/25oLQeQ) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

I'll coat the interior a few more times and then I should get the replacement UHF connectors. Once those are received and installed, I can start painting the outside. May start playing around with some ideas for feet and lower legs in the mean time.

Here's a test run with the lantern I bought inside the head with 2 coats of black spray down:

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1742/28889933668_091a6a2991_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/L1UsLC)20180612_155811 (https://flic.kr/p/L1UsLC) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Seems like I could go with a weaker light. Will do some searching to see what I can find at the Dollar Store or something. This one I bought is too nice! LOL. The holes will be covered with red plastic, either tail light repair tape of tinted plastic that I have laying around extra from my Cad build. I also need to remember that the outside will have 2-3 layers of paint down on it too and it's unlikely to be displayed in perfect dark conditions anyway. The inside is probably ready for it's silver coat once this dries.

Not much to share today, but I started to think about the size of this guy, if I am going to do the whole thing. Wookiepedia places him at 6'5" but other builders have made him 7'6". The head alone is 18", so 6'5" seems to be a little small. After spending a good deal of time thinking about it, and bugging a few other people, I decided that maybe I'll aim for 7' tall and see what happens. So, I had Jim Pedroli send me pictures of the feet of his Sideshow IG-88 and measure the feet and height in cm so that I can get some comparison sizes. Then, I made this:

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1755/42785661871_cdd49d149d_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/28bPGDn)20180613_105703 (https://flic.kr/p/28bPGDn) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

I sprayed the inside of the head with silver.

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1758/41884541275_ba45359d82_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/26PcdTn)20180613_082255 (https://flic.kr/p/26PcdTn) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

And then used a small screw to figure out how and where I will mount the eyes.

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1748/42735670022_67eb857a21_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/287ptNW)20180613_145218 (https://flic.kr/p/287ptNW) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

I then started painting the eyes and will probably paint them separate so they are a slightly different shade of dirty silver than the rest of the droid.

Lastly, I dismantled a lamp and shoved IG on it to see how the 2 different red shades that I have would do. Learned a few things.

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/896/42735670002_285bec5081_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/287ptNA)20180613_153804 (https://flic.kr/p/287ptNA) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

I'll need a smaller, less powerful light source. Something cheap and kind of wonky would be perfect. The bunch of smaller circles around the base are not supposed to be lit up, so I'll need to have the light source above them or perhaps block them out. The lamp I had bought that has LEDs is just too bright. It needs to be a dull light, something you could get in the early 80s. So, I'll keep shopping around for the interior lighting. Regarding the different red shades, the light was too bright to really tell the difference, but the circle on the left (with the additional circular detail around it) is repair tape for a taillight and the rest of the circles are through a red tinted acrylic.

Put the head aside while I'm waiting for parts and figured I should start at the ground and go up. So, I bought some MDF board and started thinking about the feet. The movie version doesn't have feet but the Sideshow version does, so I tried to use that as inspiration. I started with cutting what I think I would need:

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/899/27955887437_24f8e83fb1_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/JAneng)20180614_141453 (https://flic.kr/p/JAneng) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

And then holes in the bottom and sides for support. This is a dry fitting:

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1768/42776331302_a8e8c47185_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/28aZSZu)20180614_160700 (https://flic.kr/p/28aZSZu) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1757/27955885987_94188d6cd6_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/JAndWg)20180614_160702 (https://flic.kr/p/JAndWg) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

My plan is to leave the holes in the bottom so that I can use a heavy steel sheet or something with a pipe welded to it to assist in keeping him upright. Last thing I need is to put all this work into him and then have him topple over!

It was looking a bit plain, so I used some inspiration from the Sideshow model and added some trim pieces to help hide the piping I had done:

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/900/42107332224_1f1ddef5c0_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/279T5SC)20180615_101731 (https://flic.kr/p/279T5SC) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

The Sideshow version has some type of foot darts, so I thought I should add them as well since they looked cool. This is where furniture sliders come in handy. They are rounded and have a back to them so that you can secure them to builds. Always a great part of the store to pick up items:

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1810/42824995981_31ba7267d7_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/28fiiiF)20180615_151010 (https://flic.kr/p/28fiiiF) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Also, all sides of his feet have some circular disc trim. Was lucky enough to wander down the canning aisle and found these beauties!

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/888/41924142105_690e6c9cc9_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/26SGbQi)20180615_153006 (https://flic.kr/p/26SGbQi) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

So, here are the feet. I'll add some additional details as I go, but for now, they are good:

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1732/42824991451_6c0b744a1b_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/28figXz)20180615_175237 (https://flic.kr/p/28figXz) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1769/27955877997_cdc5c39499_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/JAnbyv)20180615_175244 (https://flic.kr/p/JAnbyv) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Then, because I was tired of looking at blurry reference images, I decided to buy the Sideshow IG88. It is inaccurate in a few places, but close enough that it will work for what I need.

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/884/42824991351_f0d6b00281_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/28figVR)20180615_175347 (https://flic.kr/p/28figVR) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Looking it over closely, I have no idea how I'm going to do certain parts. It'll definitely be an adventure. In the mail today, I received the UHF pieces for his head, so I'm hoping to get working on that shortly and at least get that portion somewhat wrapped up.

This will be a bit of a head paint photos dump, but I was able to make a lot of progress over the weekend and the head is nearing completion.

I received the UHF PL-259 connector plugs late last week and got them epoxied in.

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1787/42837058232_bb80debf31_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/28gn7Zw)20180615_231411 (https://flic.kr/p/28gn7Zw) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

I'm so glad I did as the quality of the actual metal piece is much better and the details are much sharper than the resin cast ones, and there's no sanding to do!

I then started with a black primer layer:

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1781/29013137088_7e28c13e34_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/LcMURw)20180617_105642 (https://flic.kr/p/LcMURw) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Then, I noticed some scratches from where I sanded off the mold lines, so I did a layer of filler primer, sanded a bunch, and then went back to black. After that, I did a layer of Rustoleum Hammered Dark Bronze (big thank you and props to http:www.bloody-plastic.com/props/IG88heat.html for the paint scheme he used).

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1830/42837058132_693fbda781_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/28gn7XN)20180617_105852 (https://flic.kr/p/28gn7XN) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

After that, I did a light dusting of silver, black, dark metallic, and brown, following along with the previously mentioned blog:

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1786/41075146740_0c4f0de4e4_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/25zES6b)20180618_093936 (https://flic.kr/p/25zES6b) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Then, we got it all oily using this wood stain and applying it liberally with a sponge, but wiping away most of the excess except for a few drips:

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1829/42885329861_0a48a01ff0_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/28kCwsZ)20180618_103225 (https://flic.kr/p/28kCwsZ) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

I didn't like it being so drippy and felt I used too much, so I rubbed a lot of it off, but it still came out looking nice and metallic and worn. I really like the look of it now:

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1760/29013130238_444fe476e6_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/LcMSPq)20180618_103635 (https://flic.kr/p/LcMSPq) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1788/29013130278_e3fe0da7ff_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/LcMSQ7)20180618_103643 (https://flic.kr/p/LcMSQ7) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Then, I added the eyes, which were painted separately and are a slightly darker tone than the rest of the head:

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1734/42837047302_a963642440_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/28gn4K5)20180618_131910 (https://flic.kr/p/28gn4K5) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Now, it's sitting in the garage while I wait for the last bit of the wood stain to dry so that I can hit it with a quick clear coat. Once that is done, I can add the red parts to the inside and finish my lighting plans. Then, there's a wire that comes out one side of it and the head is done!

Time to start thinking about the shins!

Nice work!

I've got a canister as well with the resin greeblies... You mind sharing where you got the UHF connectors?   That's on my list of to-do's as well.

As far as "accurate" goes on a full scale version of this, my opinion is go with what looks good and is feasible for you.  There's only a few of these out there and pretty much all of them took creative liberty on some things.  There's only a handful of people in the world that would even notice, and even then... F em.

Keep going and feel free to reach out anytime with this build.  I've built a few things and this is on my list.  I've compiled some reference material for when I begin mine.

Thanks Greedo! Yeah, I'm going to go as close to accurate as I can but there are areas where it's just going to be different. All I care about is that it looks cool and is recognizable. I'm especially taking liberties with the legs and feet and working off the Sideshows toy for those parts.

On the UHF connectors, I ordered 10 for $13 off of eBay. I have 4 left that you are welcome to have. They look much sharper than the resin ones, so I'm happy about those.

And thanks for the help offer! I'm sure I'll run into stuff and have questions, so don't be surprised if I reach out! Thank you!

Alright, well, I went ahead and glued in the red tinted acrylic.

Still trying to figure out the internal lighting and every option I've come across is too dark, except for the regular old light bulb on my desk lamp:

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1762/42027195305_4b1046f0b3_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/272NmXB)20180620_110047 (https://flic.kr/p/272NmXB) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1783/42929058381_35bdb4196a_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/28puDqZ)20180620_110058 (https://flic.kr/p/28puDqZ) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

I may try to figure out a way to install the lighting apparatus in the neck area so that the whole head receives the same amount of light. All other options I've tried have been a bit poor and the light amount is disappointing, but I really like this!

Now to get way out of order, because I've been doing some of this while parts of the head are drying, I started working on shins. First, I kept going to the hardware store for more PVC pipe in different sizes. Thought it would be funny to share what I've accumulated...

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1765/42929054771_b340ab4a4f_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/28puCmK)20180620_143222 (https://flic.kr/p/28puCmK) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Also, there's different types of PVC pipe. Thick wall and thin wall. If you want 1 1/4" to fit inside 1 1/2", you need the 1 1/2" to be the thin wall. Lesson learned and I have some wasted pipe now:

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1767/28059812927_5e74fdf5c3_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/JKxSN4)20180618_192246 (https://flic.kr/p/JKxSN4) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

So, the first thing, to try to give the shins some extra support, I put some pipe in the top of his ankles:

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/883/41118541040_36b36a4ab7_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/25DvgGL)20180618_195208 (https://flic.kr/p/25DvgGL) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Then, I added some trim pieces to what will be the shin and some holes so I can attach it all together:

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1764/42929064801_5872ac92b5_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/28puFkF)20180619_142621 (https://flic.kr/p/28puFkF) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

And I ended up with this:

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1828/42929064181_8490d82064_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/28puF9Z)20180619_145249 (https://flic.kr/p/28puF9Z) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Today, I added some Bondo so that I can get a smooth transition between the side and the front:

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/900/29056118108_8471e093ae_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/LgAcBA)20180620_100002 (https://flic.kr/p/LgAcBA) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

I'm going to let that dry and then I'll be sanding it down for days!

Then, I started thinking about knees and thighs, so I went back to the hardware store and found some pieces I need. I figure these will be the thighs:

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1823/29056112658_27491c842d_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/LgAaZC)20180620_151614 (https://flic.kr/p/LgAaZC) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Have I mentioned how much I love my Dremel? Seriously, it's the best tool in the world:

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/899/29056111538_a3afc2dfe9_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/LgAaEj)20180620_153623 (https://flic.kr/p/LgAaEj) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

So, my thighs, once epoxied together, will look roughly like this:

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1768/42210351354_6db6318064_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/27iZ5Sw)20180620_153715 (https://flic.kr/p/27iZ5Sw) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

And, all along, I've been thinking about how I'm going to do the knees. Still working off the Sideshow toy here, so I'm cutting this ABS:

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/875/29056107478_9c5bd3640c_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/LgA9sj)20180620_154346 (https://flic.kr/p/LgA9sj) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

And will heat bend it at the lines and then attach it to these pieces of 1 1/2" pipe and then they will kind of float free.

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1782/29056107368_2cdc737d61_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/LgA9qq)20180620_154945 (https://flic.kr/p/LgA9qq) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Hopefully I can get the knees sorted out soon and then get the sanding done on the shins. I still have some trim pieces to the feet that I want to add and then I have a lot of hoses and greeblies that will be needed on the legs. Then I can start to try to figure out the hips.

That's it for now. Enjoy the sun!

Have you thought about LED strips inside the head?   I did that on my Dagobah Fusion Lantern and it works great.  They have self adhesive backings, so you just wrap the inside in the places you want light to be at.

Here’s what I used:

https://www.amazon.com/PryEU-Lights-Automotive-Motorcycle-Waterproof/dp/B00YXBEQ52/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1529547495&sr=8-1-spons&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=red+led+strip+lights&psc=1

Since you’ve already done red lenses, you could just use clear LED strips.

Was just at target and seen a led light bar and this project jumped to mind and I wondered if that would be an option. Not the bar but the led strips.

Very small update today as work was pretty busy.

I got the knees put together:

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/899/29071321838_342c327819_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/LhW89S)20180621_095728 (https://flic.kr/p/LhW89S) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

And they kind of just float free on the legs:

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1814/42042282795_a938ef6be9_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2748FWK)20180621_155721 (https://flic.kr/p/2748FWK) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Then, I epoxied the thighs together and started to figure out the side details. Figured I may as well continue to use piping, so I cut what I would need and the wood for it:

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1802/42944384501_423075c13e_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/28qRcmr)20180621_150848 (https://flic.kr/p/28qRcmr) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

And I got this general thing:

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/891/42944383171_130b169b74_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/28qRbXv)20180621_152345 (https://flic.kr/p/28qRbXv) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Need to have 4 total, but they will be attached at the side of the thighs like this with additional piece of wood and some details on the top, where some hose will attach.

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1795/28074917877_e2d088df88_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/JLThYe)20180621_155710 (https://flic.kr/p/JLThYe) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Pretty sure I can hammer out the other two tomorrow and then I need to clean them up so that they are flat on the bottom and top of each transition as they look a bit messy now, but I guess that's what you get when you cut pipe with scissors...

Tornado through my office! Well, not really. But, about knee deep in parts and pieces and half used and then discarded ideas, I had to take picture to fully capture the madness. And madness, with this project specifically, is an accurate term.

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1830/42152077355_afd6c64e39_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/27dQq3p)20180627_183321 (https://flic.kr/p/27dQq3p) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

So, I left off with knees completed and a thought for the thighs. In the mean time, I sanded and then added another layer of Bondo to the shins. I've sanded it down again and it's about as smooth as it's going to get until the filler primer stage.

Otherwise, I've been plugging away very slowly and needed 4 of these things:

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1765/42335777464_b8b9d10330_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/27v4VFE)20180626_135332 (https://flic.kr/p/27v4VFE) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

And they need a top as there are hoses that go through them. I made too many but they were able to be torn apart and salvaged:

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/842/42335771454_1e72db77e1_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/27v4TU3)20180627_103145 (https://flic.kr/p/27v4TU3) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Then, I've been wanting to add an additional trim piece to the feet, so I found these in the electrical section, or plumbing, I don't know...

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1767/43054030491_63d3088368_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/28Axahx)20180627_093757 (https://flic.kr/p/28Axahx) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Cut them up and have these:

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1825/43054030071_2c349ff540_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/28Axaai)20180627_100249 (https://flic.kr/p/28Axaai) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Added to the front and back for additional details:

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1828/42335773154_b33522c303_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/27v4Upm)20180627_102059 (https://flic.kr/p/27v4Upm) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

May need to add some more details coming off the front as they still look a bit plain, but they match the Sideshow toy much better now.

Then I built some thigh greeblies where hoses come out of the front and then attach at the back:

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1808/43004116542_c332d7e456_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/28w8kBd)20180627_112246 (https://flic.kr/p/28w8kBd) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1807/42335769494_f352644b86_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/27v4Tjf)20180627_152205 (https://flic.kr/p/27v4Tjf) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

These were able to be bolted on before I attached the thighs to the shins:

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1769/42335767214_69fa69c648_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/27v4SCW)20180627_155913 (https://flic.kr/p/27v4SCW) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Then, I added the thighs to the shins and have a pretty good start at both legs being close to being done.

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1770/42152077205_53bc4a975a_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/27dQpZP)20180627_185142 (https://flic.kr/p/27dQpZP) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Added some more furniture sliders to cover bolts. Seriously, these things have so many uses!

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/835/43054132541_941419293c_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/28AxFC2)20180627_190422 (https://flic.kr/p/28AxFC2) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1763/43004268552_fae06e007e_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/28w97N5)20180627_190430 (https://flic.kr/p/28w97N5) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

There are some additional greeblies and hoses that I'm going to add but I really need to clean up my office so I can do my real job tomorrow. Then, I get to start noodling the hips, which I'm a bit stumped about how they are going to happen. Stay tuned.

Not sure if you've seen this thread or not, but it's one of the best/informative threads out there for IG88 stuff.  He's also documented a lot of info from his several meetings with Bill Hargreaves ( IG88's creator) if you are interested in that kind of stuff

Well, I said I would take some time off and come back after the summer... I never specified which summer. Well, after finishing the Wampa, Gamorrean Guard, Zuckuss and an X-wing pilot, I dragged the legs on this out of storage and decided to get back to plugging away and see where it could go. It's nice that it's just a fun project, so there really isn't a time line for completion. So, when I left off, I had a pretty good amount of the legs done but they are still in need of some finishing details. I had gotten tripped up on how to do the hips, but I think I've powered through and am making progress again. So, I dug the build threads out of the bottom of the pile and started looking at them again:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48667855073_6922479594.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2h9BtKx)20190807_113457 (https://flic.kr/p/2h9BtKx) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

I built a general frame for what the remainder of the body will look like:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48667854873_3aa5162d87.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2h9BtG6)20190807_154926 (https://flic.kr/p/2h9BtG6) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Then, added the head for motivation:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48668199526_98143f8252.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2h9Df9o)20190808_111212 (https://flic.kr/p/2h9Df9o) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Wait, no, that's not right... Here we go:

Added some fake arms for now and then started working on the hips after I found some rounded wood that I could use:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48667854333_6c8c55684b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2h9BtwM)20190808_134156 (https://flic.kr/p/2h9BtwM) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

And then I built a rough draft of the side skirts:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48667853948_4d531c8622.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2h9Btq9)20190811_143050 (https://flic.kr/p/2h9Btq9) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Those will be refined later. Then, I started building a rough draft of the three upper body segments:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48668198896_db9c478f4e.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2h9DeXw)20190811_144656 (https://flic.kr/p/2h9DeXw) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Starting on the bottom segment, I started adding all the details. Now, from here on, I'm generally using the Sideshow toy since I have one on hand and it's easily accessible. You build yours however you want.

And here's the general idea of what I'm going for:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48667852598_1ea6204f11.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2h9Bt1S)20190814_202351 (https://flic.kr/p/2h9Bt1S) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Added a few more small details and am now here:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48668196566_c13b550b69.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2h9Degm)20190817_152627 (https://flic.kr/p/2h9Degm) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Starting on the next segment, which is a bunch of tubes with pipes between them, which can be seen in these two pictures:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48668349662_bbd3dee3e9.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2h9E1LW)20190818_072831 (https://flic.kr/p/2h9E1LW) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Have a pretty good start on those:

And then the chest spike. Thanks to D'Angelo for the idea here:

And, lastly for now, I have glue on the tabs on the side skirts drying so that they can be mounted tomorrow:

So, for now, here's about where I stand:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48667859423_ece2789eb6.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2h9Bv3x)20190902_160856 (https://flic.kr/p/2h9Bv3x) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Tons to do but I've found new interest in the project, so I'm hoping I can keep plugging away and see where it takes me. Special thanks as well to Mike Kraemer for welding me a base with posts in it that run up his legs to add stability and keep him from tipping over on me.

Got the next upper torso segment mostly done. First, I added what is now being called The D'Angelo Spike:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48690177031_0be45e533b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2hbzThT)20190902_191541 (https://flic.kr/p/2hbzThT) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Then, I cut out an access panel in the back and added magnets to it so that I can grab him by the "spine" to assist in breaking him down:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48689838813_602c127271.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2hby9Kx)20190904_145119 (https://flic.kr/p/2hby9Kx) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

I may add a few details, similar to the Sideshow toy, to the access panel to keep it from being a large, blank, surface.

Then, after some adjustments, I mounted on my front tubes:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48690347312_252f060257.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2hbAKUL)20190905_153055 (https://flic.kr/p/2hbAKUL) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Then, I started adding the back tubes:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48689837428_470fd5d0d4.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2hby9kE)20190905_153116 (https://flic.kr/p/2hby9kE) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Here, you can see that they add some bulk and shape to him:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48689836988_c9835312bb.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2hby9d5)20190906_132613 (https://flic.kr/p/2hby9d5) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Then, I added the tips of some funnels to the front tubes to give them a rounded top:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48690346162_1de4df909f.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2hbAKyW)20190906_133500 (https://flic.kr/p/2hbAKyW) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

And here is the required, where I stand now picture:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48689837018_93b61bb4dd.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2hby9dA)20190906_133452 (https://flic.kr/p/2hby9dA) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

He's still missing all the tubing that goes between and connects all the cylinders and runs up and down his legs. I figure that will be pretty fiddly, so I'm saving it for close to the end. Next, I'll be tacking the upper chest and shoulders before I start to work my way down the arms.

LOL, love the D’Angelo spike and the front/rear testes!

Well, I left off somewhere and did a few other projects in the middle. Back at this a bit now and wanted to share some update photos.

Got a couple automotive funnels and then added some thin ABS to make the chest section:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49175393051_14bb261e9e.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2hVsK7k)IMG_20191126_153257888 (https://flic.kr/p/2hVsK7k) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49175393111_4ae988e393.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2hVsK8n)IMG_20191127_133232740 (https://flic.kr/p/2hVsK8n) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Then, I started working on the shoulders. Initially, I tried melting some ABS to make it one solid piece:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49174907508_b190d4158e.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2hVqfLU)IMG_20191127_192829025 (https://flic.kr/p/2hVqfLU) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

But, then I cut the bottom sections so that they could slope back, as they do on the prop:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49174907003_722a6d1f51.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2hVqfCc)IMG_20191201_191906692 (https://flic.kr/p/2hVqfCc) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

But that really weakened them. As you can see in that picture, I started brainstorming the arms as well.

I didn't love how it looked with the thin, single layer, or ABS. It also wasn't very strong and I could see it breaking apart pretty easily. So, I covered it all with one large sheet of Worbla.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49175391966_806555bc82.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2hVsJMC)IMG_20191203_173749137 (https://flic.kr/p/2hVsJMC) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49174906608_e63f907646.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2hVqfvo)IMG_20191203_173758788 (https://flic.kr/p/2hVqfvo) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Dang, my workspace is a mess. LOL

Then, I was blessed with help from Ryen Schurman who was able to design and print the 4 shoulder/chest greeblie pieces. Thanks a ton!

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49175391486_da9d11f943.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2hVsJDm)IMG_20191205_141450977 (https://flic.kr/p/2hVsJDm) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Now, I need to make a collar piece for the chest to neck transition, and sew the shoulder/neck pad thing, and then work on the arms. I have about a rough draft of what the arms will look like but I need to add a lot of details and figure out a few missing pieces, but it's coming along and progress is being made.

Well, I've left this idle for a bit, but it's because I keep getting stuck and then having a moment of inspiration and then make a good deal of progress. So, I was working on the arms when I last updated, so here are some updated pics showing my progress:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49670588183_567ef43e44.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iFdKnr)IMG_20200102_162343413 (https://flic.kr/p/2iFdKnr) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Then, I got stuck on the hands for a bit, but started slowly plugging away.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49670588063_8fbd6d78b5.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iFdKkn)IMG_20200312_132752705 (https://flic.kr/p/2iFdKkn) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Went back and added some greeblie details.

And, working on the right hand, I wanted to make what I'm calling the pincher claw. Started out with a plate of steel, but it's too thin, so I did a few options out of wood, which I thought I would have a difficult time adhering the outer section to.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49671131186_b9c78eaa68.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iFgwMy)IMG_20200315_164422351 (https://flic.kr/p/2iFgwMy) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

So, I used a thick sheet of ABS and the lower track slider piece for a screen door:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49671416722_a8530ef083.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iFhZEA)IMG_20200316_180746887 (https://flic.kr/p/2iFhZEA) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

But, the plastic piece didn't look right, so I cut this bugger in half:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49671130901_7b1e69d291.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iFgwGD)IMG_20200316_183523193 (https://flic.kr/p/2iFgwGD) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49671416487_a928b1e157.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iFhZAx)IMG_20200316_183632109 (https://flic.kr/p/2iFhZAx) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

And was pretty happy with the progress:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49671130821_8e71f5a6f9.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iFgwFg)IMG_20200316_183829046 (https://flic.kr/p/2iFgwFg) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

So, today, I added the outer layer of ABS to give them more of the look of the Sideshow toy:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49671416137_8a5e7dbefd.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iFhZuv)IMG_20200317_151414499 (https://flic.kr/p/2iFhZuv) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49671415937_1acb7f2fe0.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iFhZr4)IMG_20200317_161835702 (https://flic.kr/p/2iFhZr4) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

And now, my IG88 has one hand!!!

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49671130391_f7819ca762.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iFgwxR)IMG_20200317_170342541 (https://flic.kr/p/2iFgwxR) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Still haven't worked out how he will be holding a blaster. May look kind of wonky with one in his hand but maybe an E11 would be light enough that it could be held. I dunno, more to come...

I left off with a right hand and in need of a left, right? This one is supposed to look more like a horseshoe, so I bought some horseshoes, but wanting to reduce weight, I just used it as a template and cut it out of ABS plastic:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49689019362_39881f0ea9.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iGRdjo)IMG_20200319_135306437 (https://flic.kr/p/2iGRdjo) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49688181488_b40fa3f92c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iGLVfh)IMG_20200319_135321781 (https://flic.kr/p/2iGLVfh) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Added the plastic edging:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49688716031_172697e57b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iGPE9x)IMG_20200319_151942893 (https://flic.kr/p/2iGPE9x) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

The screen door roller parts:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49689019097_4e92df015f.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iGRdeP)IMG_20200319_161235331 (https://flic.kr/p/2iGRdeP) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

And then some additional greeblies to make it look more complete:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49689018832_4543d85af3.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iGRdaf)IMG_20200319_163000842 (https://flic.kr/p/2iGRdaf) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

And, here we have a left hand!

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49688715666_6a8f97319b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iGPE3f)IMG_20200319_171116488 (https://flic.kr/p/2iGPE3f) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

COWER IN FEAR MORTALS!!!!

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49689018582_dc192d463a.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iGRd5W)IMG_20200319_171145316 (https://flic.kr/p/2iGRd5W) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Then, I built this little left arm greeblie thing:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49689018427_b23da9ca69.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iGRd3g)IMG_20200322_134636226 (https://flic.kr/p/2iGRd3g) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

And, now on to armpits. I wanted to enclose the chest box a little more as it was too open and I didn't like how it looked.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49688715416_d21f9721c4.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iGPDXW)IMG_20200322_144740337 (https://flic.kr/p/2iGPDXW) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

So, I put in some ABS in there and sealed it in:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49688714706_f3e4f98b9d.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iGPDKG)IMG_20200322_144826250 (https://flic.kr/p/2iGPDKG) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

And, then, lastly for today, I wanted to make a collar for the body to neck transition. Make it look a little better. So, I cut this piece out and have it gluing in place now:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49688180113_ba5c84a42c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iGLUQz)IMG_20200322_164923952 (https://flic.kr/p/2iGLUQz) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Cad Bane approves.

I picked up an E11 and I am reasonable certain I can mount it in the left hand. Would be cool to get another for the right hand but I want to see how it looks first and see how it handles the added weight. I don't anticipate a problem. Next, there are some greeblie pieces for the legs that hoses run out of, so I need to build those and then add the hoses. Then, I probably can start the arduous task of painting this monster. While that is happening, I plan on making the shoulder bags and I also need to make the bandolier with grenades. So, I feel like I'm starting to reach the final stretch, but there's still a lot to do an every time I look at him, I see something else to tweak. So, don't be surprised if I come up with things I missed and need to add them.

Thanks for the input and the kind words. I really feel like I've found some momentum to get this across the finish line. Well, that, and the fact that I can't actually go anywhere!

First, a little distraction. What if?!?!?!

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49695726987_cf1a50ce9a.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iHrAg6)IMG_20200322_172751814 (https://flic.kr/p/2iHrAg6) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Then, I added these parts for the hoses/tubes to come out of on his left leg. It's amazing how versatile ping pong balls are!

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49694886408_ab6ed78237.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iHnhom)IMG_20200323_164703331 (https://flic.kr/p/2iHnhom) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49695423206_442c2ea656.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iHq2Xu)IMG_20200323_165102544 (https://flic.kr/p/2iHq2Xu) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

I made one for the other side, but the glue failed, so I may revisit that and come up with something else.

Then, for the first time since halfway though, I moved it out of my office!

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49694885928_1b284c6024.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iHnhf5)IMG_20200324_143720057 (https://flic.kr/p/2iHnhf5) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

It breaks down to two legs, lower torso, middle torso, upper torso, two arms, and a head. So, I should be able to transport it. I am hopeful that also makes it easier to paint.

I believe it's ready for paint, so I've ordered that and should be able to get started shortly. There are some hose details that go from one part to a separate part, so I'm brainstorming the use of magnets to make them removable, we'll see if he really needs them once I have more done. I have the shoulder bags to make and ordered the leather for the bandolier. Need to make the grenades for that and the ammo boxes. Other than that, there's a blaster I have that I need to get assembled and painted for one of his hands. I think I have it worked out how to mount it. Have his large rifle as well and I was thinking about a rifle sling for that so it looks like he's armed to the teeth. May look good. Oh, and some internal lighting for the head!

Anyway, lots more to do but at least I can start to see that I'm getting closer!

The painting has begun! Yesterday, I hit it all with some filler primer:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49701995603_676381ae53.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iHZHGF)IMG_20200325_131435470_HDR (https://flic.kr/p/2iHZHGF) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

And then today, I did a black undercoat:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49702842942_b3ebe63509.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iJ54zY)IMG_20200326_103302863 (https://flic.kr/p/2iJ54zY) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49701993243_dcd3ae6553.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iHZGZZ)IMG_20200326_131316554 (https://flic.kr/p/2iHZGZZ) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

And, lastly for the day, I sewed the shoulder bag thing that he wears:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49702842012_0e7de15845.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iJ54iW)IMG_20200326_142042372 (https://flic.kr/p/2iJ54iW) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

May redo that, depends on how it all looks when put together. If the weather holds, which it's not supposed to, I'll be able to put on the dark bronze paint tomorrow and once that's dry, I can add some additional paint details and the oil and other fun stuff. Maybe even assemble him to see how he looks painted.

I got my leather for the bandolier today so I'm going to start on that, which is really the final detail besides blasters and head illumination. Started working on the grenades. They may take some time as they have some pretty fun details I need to figure out. I can taste the end of this project!

Got the bronze on him and decided to reassemble him for the fine detail work and the oil and stuff. Figured it would look better if the oil could run from one part to another and look more natural. Hoping I'm right.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49706463371_a1e6f7bce2.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iJoBPa)IMG_20200327_191656_136 (https://flic.kr/p/2iJoBPa) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Remaining list of things to do are to add lights to the head, finishing paint work and oil, blaster for his hand, bandolier with grenades... I think that's it. Maybe decorate the base a little better. Any suggestions?

Used wood stain to give him an oily and dripping look, since I figure personal grooming isn't his best point.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49724978131_ea88912834.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iL2vBa)IMG_20200328_131159572 (https://flic.kr/p/2iL2vBa) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Then, I picked up this 3D props E11 from the junkyard:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49724978106_9bce480cd4.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iL2vAJ)IMG_20200330_125033392 (https://flic.kr/p/2iL2vAJ) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Magic!

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49724977951_e5d1175bd8.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iL2vy4)IMG_20200330_143148434 (https://flic.kr/p/2iL2vy4) by Michael Halstead (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150894402@N05/), on Flickr

Never mind the small pile of spare parts...

So, I then wrecked the E11 by drilling large holes in it and making it so that I can bolt it to his hand so he can hold it.

Last few details were the bandolier belt and the head lighting. I used some ABS plastic, leather, snaps, Easter eggs, and ball bearings for the bandolier. These are the grenades:
